Umpire Odds & Ends: Wegner Injured

HP Umpire Mark Wegner was injured during today's Giants-Brewers game. In the bottom of the 8th inning, Wegner moved down the third baseline to follow a bunted ball that went foul from Brewers batter Carlos Gomez on an 0-1 pitch from Giants pitcher Sergio Romo with two outs and none on. Wegner made a short step to avoid the bat of Gomez lying on the ground and immediately bent down (never falling to the ground). Wegner was favoring his lower right leg. Wegner was tended to and assisted off the field by Brewers trainers. 2B Umpire Mike Everitt changed into plate umpiring equipment and came out to take over plate duties after a 13 minute delay. 1B Umpire Mike Winters and 3B Umpire Mike Muchlinski manned the bases together for the remainder of the game. The crew's 3-man mechanics, with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth, can be seen here on the final play of the game.

Mark Wegner (47) currently has one ejection and 4 points in the Umpire Ejection Fantasy League.

One of the Best. Sounds like a season ending injury

Tmac,

Thanks for the link.

That's a shame, Wegner has become one of the better younger umpires in the game. I wish him a speedy recovery.

If he is out for the year, does that mean that the people that have Mark as a primary umpire just have to rely on their secondary umpire the rest of the year?

That would be correct. For this season, if a Primary or Secondary Umpire is removed from duty, owners of that umpire will not gain - nor lose - points, as that umpire will not be in action. We might put in an injury provision for next season, but rosters will remain unchanged for this season.

He is a solid ump, which is why i selected him from the beginning. He missed some time near the end of last year, now he'll miss a good chunk,if not all of the remainder of this season.Very unfortunate.

I feel bad for Mark. He's one of the best umpires in the game and will probably be a crew chief some day.

Just a proposal for next year: Once primary and secondary umpires are selected, all members should pick an "injury" umpire. If someone's primary umpire gets injured, their secondary umpire becomes the primary umpire and the injury umpire becomes the secondary umpire. If the secondary umpire goes down, the injury umpire becomes the secondary umpire.

And if the injured umpire returns during the season, they are put back into the role they had before they suffered the injury.

that's really too bad- I hope its not as bad as originally suspected and we see him back in action sooner rather than later. i wasn't counting on losing too many points with wegner, so it's a shame this happened. one suggestion might be that in the event of an injury, changes can be made only at the start of different phases of the season?

@zcr57 and cyclone14, excellent suggestions. We will make some sort of injury accommodation for next season.

All, when this season & postseason conclude in October or November, we're going to open up a rules brainstorming thread where we'll revisit this (injury umpire) and other ideas in preparation for next year.

Stay tuned...
