Ejections: Dan Bellino (6)

HP Umpire Dan Bellino ejected Indians Manager Manny Acta for arguing balls and strikes in the top of the 1st inning of the Indians-Tigers game. In the top of the 1st, Indians batter Asdrubal Cabrera struck out on a 1-2 fastball from Tigers pitcher Rick Porcello. Previously in the inning, Indians batter Kosuke Fukudome had been called out on strikes and batter Jason Kipnis grounded out after receiving two called strikes (Kipnis attempted a check swing on the 2-1 pitch, but as the pitch was located belt high and over the center of home plate, Bellino called a strike regardless). A Balls/Strikes Exemption has been applied.* Replays indicate Bellino's offensive accuracy rating for the top of the 1st inning was 100%, the call was correct. At the time of the ejection, the contest was tied, 0-0.

This is Dan Bellino (93)'s sixth ejection of 2011.
Dan Bellino now has 18 points in the Umpire Ejection Fantasy League (14 Previous + 2 MLB + 2 Correct Call) = 18.
Dan Bellino is owned as a Secondary Umpire by sachmet, who is now tied for 2nd place in the UEFL with 31 points.
*A Balls/Stikes Exemption has been applied under UEFL Rule 6.e.iv.

This is the 199th ejection of 2011.
This is the 98th Manager ejection of 2011.
This is Manny Acta's second ejection of 2011.

This may have been an intentional ejection as the bench coach announced his retirement today. I saw Larry Brown do that with Calipari as his assistant when they had a road game against the Nets.

Class act by both IF that's true.

Either way, only one more for 200.

Didn't look intentional from the highlight.

Manny Acta has denied claims that the ejection was intentional.

Acta: "I would never make a mockery of a baseball game like that. If I had wanted Tim to manage, I wouldn't have gotten thrown out. I would have handed him the lineup cards and told him to manage. He didn't manage the game anyway. I managed it from the tunnel. It was just like being in the penalty box. I was arguing the low pitch to Cabrera and it escalated from there."

No, Bellino's a jerk who has a big ego problem. This ejection is unacceptable. Why are there rabbit ears during the last game of the year. I trust what Acta said since he rarely argues to begin with. I agree with Acta when he said Other Managers Told him that Bellino Is a guy who thinks he is tough and is trying to make a name for himself. Spot on! Dan, get your head out of the dugout. When are people on this board going to stop worshiping this guy?

Btw, after watching replays from all the feeds of Bellino's Bruce Bochy ejection, I still fail to see conclusive evidence he got that call correct.

...Do you see conclusive evidence he got that call incorrect?...

@anon112

Really? Were you at this game? Do you know what Acta said to Belino to get tossed? You don't need rabbit ears to hear when the guy is screaming at you from the dugout. And for the Boschy ej, that was probably one of the top two toughest calls of the year... I can't even be sure on slo-mo replay.

I've met Bellino...he's very arrogant...that being said...as far as I know there is no "Game 162" rule where you just blow things off because it's the last game. Rabbit ears comments are nothing but coaches, players excuses for getting busted acting like jacka$$es. Fans crying sourgrapes about it is more pitiful.

@1:12AM:

So managers can just yell from the dugout with impunity?

Here's an idea, how about they keep their mouths shut and not argue balls and strikes?

Ah, it's the old "umpire should just ignore people yelling at him because they're in the dugout" argument. Very similar to the "catcher can say whatever he wants as long as he's in the crouch" argument, in that they both are incorrect.

Wow, Kinda funny i was the only guy who said Bellino wasn't ready last year and i did NOT like the precedent of giving a guy a job who had minimal experience in the Majors a full-time gig.. but he's friends with Randy Marsh and we know how MLB works.... Bellino did a poor job overall this year, but it will take time to see if he will be another Eddie Rap, who was a WILDMAN early in his National League career, or if his performance and attitude will continue to be perceived as poor.

I'd have a slightly snobbish attitude if i was him. He was on a grounds crew got friendly with umpires because they enjoyed the fact he went to law school. got pushed through umpire school without being very good and then 8 years later had a big league contract. For crying out loud guys like Drake and Goooch are up in the bigs for that long. He's pampered and now MLB will have to suffer through his growing pains

This is a poor job. It's the last day of the season, and it's the first inning. Agree with tmac 100%. Just give him a warning and move on for crying out loud!

I'm really confused by these comments. How can anyone say Bellino had a bad year? Because of six ejections? People that think he has a quick trigger don't know what they are talking about. Look at most umpires in their first few years. Almost all of them have a ton of ejections. But to say he had a bad year over six is dumb. And three of the six were in the last four weeks. This guy is the future of MLB umpires. Every umpire I talk to throughout the minor leagues says that Dan is a great person and deserved the job. I personally would just congratulate him on his first full year as a big league umpire. What he did last night only supports that to me. It's the last game of the season and Acta wanted to play games with him probably to test him. Meanwhile the Tigers were playing for home field advantage. I don't think we really understand how difficult it is to be a new major league umpire. Good for Dan. I'm excited about his career.

The guy is extremely lucky. That doesn't mean he's not deserving. Just that he's extremely lucky. As all MLB umpires are.

@12:34 You can't even really say that he has a quick trigger. This out of 6 was the quickest i've seen. I remember back at the beginning of the season-Dan's 1st ejection I believe-And he let Quade look like a fool. He has a very long leash and my opinion. His reaction, to me, is one of the quote "Magic Words."

Sorry, I'm late to this conversation. But in response to this quote:

"I'd have a slightly snobbish attitude if i was him. 1. Snobby attitude. Maybe. But I think all MLB umpires have to be to an extent.

2. Bellino was on a grounds crew? umpires liked him because he went to law school? So you are telling me there was an attorney on the grounds crew? That doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

3. Pushed through umpire school and wasn't very good? I don't think this even calls for a response. This is just plain idiotic.

4. Gooch and Drake. Great umpires that have great careers ahead of both of them.

5. Bellino pampered? I don't agree with this at all. Growing pains, I can see. Every umpire at every level goes through growing pains.
