Ejections: Derryl Cousins (2)

3B Umpire Derryl Cousins ejected Brewers right fielder Nyjer Morgan for Fighting - Excess Contact - Unsportsmanlike Conduct in the top of the 9th inning of the Brewers-Cardinals game. With none out and none on, Morgan swung at and missed a 2-2 fastball from Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter for a swinging third strike. This bench clearing ejection is classified as Fighting - Excess Contact - Unsportsmanlike Conduct since Morgan's actions were determined to have caused the incident, the call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the contest was tied, 0-0. The Cardinals ultimately won the contest, 2-0.

This is Derryl Cousins (13)'s second ejection of 2011.
Derryl Cousins now has 2 points in the Umpire Ejection Fantasy League (-2 Previous + 2 MLB + 2 Correct Call = 2).
Derryl Cousins was not drafted in 2011.
*This call is correct per UEFL Rule 6.b.ii.e., which governs Unsportsmanlike Conduct and Fighting.

This is the 185th ejection of 2011.
This is the 83rd player ejection of 2011.
Prior to his ejection, Morgan was 1-3 in the contest.

I know the call is right because it's an unsportsmanlike issue, but if you're going to toss someone, you have to go Morgan AND someone on the Cards. Pujols was absolutely yelling at Morgan, he should have been gone. But Albert Pujols is a big name player, and Derryl Cousins is one of those umpires who calls things based on who's big time and who's not. As a result, only Morgan is gone.

@11:29pm. I wish I could say what I wanted to, but I'd like this post to be seen. Mr. Cousins does not need me to defend him. He's a pillar in the Pantheon that is umpiring.
Thanks for you input Anonymous, all the best!

I don't know if the dig on Cousins is fair, but 11:29 hit the nail on the head with the majority of his post. If either Carpenter, Morgan, or Pujols restrains himself there is no incident. I don't see how it's fair to put it all on Morgan when there's evidence that he may not have started it.

Huh? The guy runs his mouth and throws his chew towards the pitcher and you expect him to say in the game or have someone from the other team tossed? I don't get it. Morgan deserved to get dumped for being stupid.

Nyjer Morgan is a punk, plain and simple. I don't care for Carpenter much but he did nothing to provoke Morgan. Morgan was the instigator and Cousins got it right by ONLY ejecting Morgan.

@12:23am-
Unsportsmanlike Conduct. Let's see, Morgan can be herd saying, "F-U" to the pitcher. Then Morgan calls the pitcher the "P" word. Then Morgan takes an angle that is not towards the dugout. Then Morgan tries to run though the umpire. If this is all about who started it, only a 5th grader doesn't know that the 2nd guy is the one who ALWAYS gets caught.
Is there evidence that Pujols started it?

Please site your evidence.

I think Morgan was a little embarrassed about his last swing, he looked like a fool on that swing.

And honestly what was Morgan going to do? Does Napoleon come to mind? He certainly had the opportunity to charge the mound, but for some reason waited until the window was closed, and then that's when he decided to try to climb through it.
The only bright spot was Prince flicking Morgan back to the dugout with his pinky. It was as if Prince was saying, "Son, this isn't the way to handle this, they got your goat, and you fell for it you idiot".

Hey folks, don't forget that Morgan has a real history as a trouble maker. That will never help his cause. He's never going to be a good guy and will never catch a break because of that. It's called Karma.

Anonymous 11:29PM is as clueless as Morgan! So is Anonymous 12:23AM. If you watch the video, you'll see Carpenter didn't even react to it. He just stood on the mound!

If Morgan doesn't throw a hissy-fit, nothing ever happens.

In reality, Fielder should have been ejected (and suspended) by rule. I'm not saying he should be, but by rule he technically should. He gave the umpire a little shove..

Morgan is the only one who should have been ejected in this event and rightfully he was the only one to be ejected. To think a Cardinals player had anything to do with this is absurd.

But Cincy and Milwaukee fans keep spewing the whole "Cardinals need to chill out" mantra.

Mike, the video doesn't even show Carpenter after the pitch. And you talk about clueless...

And don't forget Carpenter has his own extensive history of douchiness and provoking brawls. If you're not going to give Morgan the benefit of the doubt, which is fine, then you also shouldn't give it to Carpenter.

@811, we can give the benefit to Carpenter because the live broadcast shows that Carpenter walks behind the mound, back to Morgan, after striking him out. They show a replay from the press box cam, but of course, the MLB video doesn't include this. It's not the first time that MLB video has been misleading.

However, although Morgan certainly instigated, Pujols ran from first base to yell at Morgan. Morgan ejected was a good call, but Pujols could have gone, too.

Why would pujols deserve to go, he saw morgan throw his tobacco at carpender and ran in to protect his guy. Never even made it to morgan, he spouted when he made it between him and calender

We could technically get morgan for "throwing at" too, right? ;D

A bad display of sportsmanship by Morgan clearly he needed to go. And I agree that Pujols did overstep his bounds, but in baseball, it's either 0 or 60 - it's nothing or an ejection. No in between. In football, Morgan might be disqualified while Pujols gets a 15 yard personal, basketball he'd get a technical foul, hockey a minor, but in baseball, there is no in between.

Nyjer, "He said it first. He's gotta go too."

I like how he tries to defend his actions to the crew at the end of the video, completely forgetting what he did following the strikeout (the profanity and chew toss).

If you watch the part of the video that focuses only on Morgan, you'll see that he says F*U* immediately after he swung and missed the pitch. I'd like to know how he expects anyone to believe that Carpenter said something first. Carpenter couldn't have had time to say "kiss my foot" or flip a bird.

Nyjer Morgan should get tossed at the top of the 1st inning of every game. :-P

Pujols didn't do anything demonstrative until he felt his pitcher was in danger. He never made threatening movements toward another player. I wouldn't have tossed him, either.

Also, "site" does not equal "cite."

Sorry guys, but your collective bias against Morgan, though perhaps not unfounded, is clouding your judgment of what actually transpired.

I like that phrasing used above, "Unsportsmanlike Conduct since Morgan's actions were determined to have caused the incident." As in, were determined by the umpires who ejected him. As in, that's not necessarily exactly what happened, that's just how people interpreted it. Great use of language.

And @ Anonymous 500pm, thank you! That just confirms what a bunch of us were saying that Cousins ejecting Morgan and no one from the Cards was a bad move because rarely is it one person and one person alone who does things. Hey guess what that sounds like. It sounds like Cousins "determined" that Morgan "caused the incident." It just fits together so nicely.

Big Marc said...

Has to be Tony agreeing with me and correcting my grammar, thanks buddy. I still don't know when to use "site" or "cite", but I'm sure you'll let me know. God Bless school teachers.

To the 5pm guy's. You guy's have different take on this, and I respect your opinions.
Thanks for your input.
