MLB Ejections 020, 021, 022: Tim Timmons (1, 2, 3)

HP Umpire Tim Timmons ejected Pirates P Jonathan Sanchez and Manager Clint Hurdle for Throwing At Cardinals batter Allen Craig in the bottom of the 1st inning and Pirates Hitting Coach Jay Bell for arguing a non-ejection in the top of the 3rd inning of the Pirates-Cardinals game. With none out and none on in the 1st,
Sanchez was tossed immediately.
Sanchez surrendered back-to-back home runs to Matt Carpenter and Carlos Beltran before giving up a single to Matt Holliday. Replays indicate the first pitch to the next batter, Craig, was high and inside for a hit by pitch, the call is irrecusable. Hurdle was ejected for arguing Sanchez's ejection With two out and none on in the 5th, Pirates batter Sterling Marte took a 2-2 fastball inside for a hit-by-pitch, the argument concerning ejections or warnings is unsportsmanlike-NEC and is irrecusable. At the time of the 1st inning ejections, the Cardinals were leading, 2-0. At the time of the 5th inning ejection, the Cardinals were leading, 3-0. The Cardinals ultimately won the contest, 9-1.

These are Tim Timmons (95)'s first, second and third ejections of 2013.
Tim Timmons now has 6 points in the UEFL (0 + 3*[2 MLB + 0 Irrecusable] = 6).
Crew Chief Mike Winters now has 3 points in the UEFL's Crew Division (0 + 3 Irrecusable = 3).

These are the 20th, 21st and 22nd ejections of 2013.
This is the 11th player ejection of 2013.
This is the 9th Manager ejection of 2013.
Prior to his ejection, Sanchez's line was 0.0 IP, 2 ER.
The Pirates now have 3 ejections, 1st in the NL Central (PIT 3; MIL 2; CHC 1; CIN, STL 0).
This is Clint Hurdle's first ejection since September 22, 2012 (Tim Timmons; QOC = Y).
This is Jonathan Sanchez's first career ejection.
This is Jay Bell's first ejection since September 9, 2002 (Phil Cuzzi; QOC = U [Intentional HBP]).
These are Tim Timmons' first ejections since September 22, 2012 (Clint Hurdle; QOC = Y).

I'm not a fan of this ejection. 1st inning, 2-0. Given the situation and how little control Sanchez has to begin with, I think this is a bit impetuous by Timmy. To me, when an umpire does this it is obvious he is overthinking. I don't often agree with Clint Hurdle but I do here. Is Timmons "wrong"? Certainly not, it is within his jurisdiction. But given the situation I think it is a mismanagement of the scenario.

Pirates Hitting Coach Jay Bell has been ejected by Timmons as well.

Was that during the commercial break or did I just blink and miss it?

As a Pirate fan, I can say without a doubt that Hurdle tends to pick the worst possible times to argue. There was no reason to argue this call because Timmons isn't about to change his mind and reverse Sanchez's ejection. All Hurdle accomplished was removing himself from the game for no reason.

More on topic, if I was behind the plate and the pitcher gave up back-to-back home runs and then missed by that much on the very next pitch I would have tossed him too... if we were three or four innings in. The situation makes the HBP look really bad, but in the first inning I'm usually going to give the pitcher the benefit of the doubt.

somebody challenge, just for the heck

Seemed like a quick hook, but certainly justifiable. I played with Sanchez in
college, and he's never struck me as someone to go after a hitter
although I'm not ruling it out. Also, he has poor control on a good
day, and today was a bad day, so my actual thought being behind the dish would likely be he
was going inside to try and move a hitter off the plate and get them off their timing and like everything else today, missed. Warning only in
my opinion.

I will challenge. I think the situation [count and inning] may present an argument in which Sanchez did not throw at Craig, which would, I think, meet the UEFL standard for an irrecusable call to be changed should be there sufficient evidence.

I am fairly confident that Hurdle argued BECAUSE OF THE SITUATION. 1st inning, 2-0 game, why would Sanchez (again, a guy with control problems to begin with) do it on purpose? I am not saying he did or didn't, but an umpire speculating in THAT situation seems dubious to me. But then again, there is a reason these guys are there and I am doing high school. =-) They've been doing it for a myriad of YEARS and I have only 4 under my belt.

OMG! Why don't we just make the appeals board rule on every ejection to make this a bit less silly.

He had flu-like symptoms

This very clearly did not start in the first inning of today's game. If that were the case, I think I would agree with you guys questioning Timmons' judgement. But there was obviously something going on that you, me, and those announcers didn't know about or make a connection to from a previous game.

The Cardinals Wrap says he argued that the Cardinals pitcher was not ejected after hitting Marte

Lindsay said...

I understand why Hurdle thought he should argue, obviously it's because he disagrees due to the situation. I just personally think a manager should never argue something like this because in the best-case-scenario he accomplishes nothing and in the worst-case now he's out of the game too.

Here's the video of what happened with O'Nora. The look on the face of Mets manager Terry Collins when he comes out from the clubhouse pretty much says it all.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure I remember O'Nora having to leave another game I was watching a few years ago, something to do with his back.

The crew of Culbreth, Welke and Johnson did a nice job as a 3 man crew for the remainder of the game.

Just my luck... I had Timmons last year and got nothing. Today... 6 pts.

This appeal has been summarily denied by the UEFL Appellate Interpreter.

Pursuant to UEFL Rule 6-2-b-5, the Quality of Correctness for all ejections for reasons of Fighting, Throwing At, Unsportsmanlike Conduct-NEC, or Excess Contact shall be adjudged as "irrecusable" by default, unless there is clear and convincing evidence to suggest otherwise.

The Appellate Interpreter finds this burden of clear and convincing evidence has not been reached as if Throwing At does not suffice, a reason of Excess Contact shall be sufficient. As Rule 6-2-b-5 grants either reason the associated QOC of irrecusable, such an appeal is fruitless. Furthermore, the Interpreter finds this specific charge of appeal to be without merit.

Appeal summarily denied due to Rule 6-2-b-5 and lack of merit.

Well I must have really zoned out during that broadcast to have completely missed that...

The final statement in the last video is what I find Hilalrious.... Amazing how when Pittsburgh was hit ejections need to happen... But when Cards got hit it was tired arm... Oh i missed that my monitor went fuzzy. This whole situation is textbook by Timmons.... I'm trying to remember if early in his career he ejected a pitcher for throwing at a batter with bases loaded....
Notice he looked (observed) but did not speak and he didn't get angry he just did his job. He was spot on IMO and on the pulse of what was going on.

Lindsay said...

It would be one thing Sanchez is a great control pitcher who took his anger out on the batter after giving up 2 runs in the first inning. But, Sanchez has hardly been able to control any pitch he throws for his entire career. He has to be a leader in HBP because of his horrible control. I think the umpire was way too quick to eject Sanchez in this case. He must have had a bad day or something.

Lindsay said...

Just saw that Sanchez got 6 games for this ej.

Lindsay said...

Agreed 100% on ALL sentiments.

Lindsay said...

I don't think Sanchez should have been ejected, but since he was I am not sure why Lynn was not. Only b/c Sanchez was ejected...

Lindsay said...

A hitting coach was ejected. That's a non player/non manager. Who won that prop?

Lindsay said...

DeMario Hale, who is the blue jays bench coach got ejected and Ron Gardenhire also got tossed in a different game

Lindsay said...

Total loss of control by HP in this game.
You can't allow one side to get away with HBP while punishing the other. Honestly, the right thing to do is toss every pitcher that plunks a batter after you start that trend. Some of those pitches late in the game--they are the ones that should have resulted in an immediate hook--not the first inning stuff.

Lindsay said...

In no way is indiscriminately tossing everyone who hits a batter the right thing to do. You CAN allow one side to get away with it if you deem theirs was unintentional while the other was intentional. That's whats called "umpiring". No one has any clue what was going on down there except the people on the field. We dont know what was said or done that day or even days before. Timmons is in the bigs for a reason. I guarantee theres information that we dont know that led to his decisions.
