UEFL Year End Award Nominations: 2013 Season

Award Nominations: As the 2013 season draws to a close, the Umpire Ejection Fantasy League prepares to distribute its Postseason Awards to eligible umpires* who, during the past season, have demonstrated significant performances to fit the terms of one of these awards (UEFL Rule 4-4).

a. Umpire of the Year (min. 1 / max. 1 umpire)
b. Noteworthy Umpire of the Year (min. 1 / max. 2 umpires)
c. Honorable Umpire of the Year (min. 0 / max. 2 umpires)
d. Fill-In Umpire of the Year (min. 0 / max. 1 umpire)
e. Most Improved Umpire of the Year (min. 0 / max. 1 umpire)
f. Crew Chief of the Year (min. 0 / max. 1 umpire)
g. Best Ejection of the Year (min. 0 / max. 2 ejections)
h. Worst Umpire of the Year (min. 0 / max. 1 umpire)

Please take your time in consideration of an umpire for as many or as few awards as you prefer; Ballots will be accepted until 11:59 PM PT on Tuesday, November 5; Awards distribution will begin Wednesday, November 6. To cast your ballot, click the below link ("Read more »") to view the entire post.
Points scale for post season awards: a. (+5); b. (+3); c. (+2); d. (+2); e. (+1); f. (+1); g. (+1); h. (-3).
*Eligible umpires are listed on the ballot for each applicable category. For instance, only umpires on the full-time staff roster are eligible for Awards a-c, e and h.

a. Umpire of the Year: This Umpire has been the best MLB Umpire the past year, bar none. This Umpire has been more dedicated, professional, and positive than all others. This award will be given to one umpire.
b. Noteworthy Umpire of the Year: This Umpire has been dedicated, professional, and has worked hard. Perhaps a rising star, the Noteworthy Umpire of the Year is an umpire to keep an eye on, for an expectation of great things down the line. This award will be given to one or two umpires.
c. Honorable Umpire of the Year: This Umpire has been the most honorable Umpire during the past year. Perhaps through Community Service, or through struggling with and overcoming his own difficulties, this Umpire has been the most personally admirable of all. This award may or may not be given to either one or two umpires.
d. Fill-In Umpire of the Year: This Umpire has been the best AAA Call-Up Umpire the past year, bar none. This Umpire has been the most dedicated, professional, and positive AAA/Non-MLB Full Time Umpire of all non-MLB Full Time Umpires. This award may or may not be given to a maximum of one umpire.
e. Most Improved Umpire of the Year: This Umpire has improved his overall performance from the previous season more noticeably than any other Umpire. Generally, this umpire has developed into a solid arbiter within the past year. This award may or may not be given to a maximum of one umpire.
f. Crew Chief of the Year: This Umpire has been the best MLB Umpire Crew Chief, the past year, bar none. This Umpire has led his crew(s) better than all others. This award will be given to one umpire.
g. Best Ejection of the Year: In the form of "Ejection 123: Umpire (1)," this award recognizes the best ejection(s) of the year. Nominated and selected due to form, mechanics, entertainment value, reason for ejection, or overall quality, the Best Ejection of the Year is awarded to one or two umpires for one or two specific ejections. The award may be given to one umpire for two separate ejections, in which case, he receives one point for each ejection.
h. Worst Umpire of the Year: This Umpire has shown a continual regression in ability, and might have had a regrettable incident(s) occur in-season. The Worst Umpire of the Year is unprofessional and does a disservice to Umpires and the game. This award may or may not be given to a maximum of one umpire.

I think you need to check your responses for Crew Chief of the year, lol. I didn't watch every MLB game this year, but I'm fairly certain Ed Rapuano didn't don the black this year much less serve as a crew chief.

The Crew Chief of the Year needs to be fixed. I voted for Dana DeMuth (even though I listed a different Crew Chief as Umpire of the Year) because of those listed I like how he runs a crew and protects his fellow umpires. Had he been listed I probably would have voted for John Hirschbeck because I really appreciated the comment he made during Game 1 of the World Series. That simple statement is exactly what umpires (and crew chiefs in particular) should be striving for

I did not vote for worst umpire as no ml umpire came close to meeting your criteria.

I voted Wally Bell Honorable and Umpire of the year. I think it's well deserved and fitting

Lindsay said...

did you watch Marty Foster this season?

Lindsay said...

Mr.stone what did Marty due that was. Unprofessional?

Lindsay said...

The CC of the year bugs have been fixed. Barrett, Culbreth and Hirschbeck were added, Joyce's (interim) label was removed and Cousins, Rapuano and Tschida were deleted.

Lindsay said...

i think poor judgment and/or poor rules applications would classify as unprofessional, considering what their profession is based on.

Lindsay said...

What about Alan Porter with his bad calls and ejections? If I could pick two it would be him and Fletcher. He made some terrible calls and he is never very good.

Lindsay said...

Gil, I voted before the changes were made just so you can keep an eye out with your numbers

Don't know if anyone else is having this problem, but I can't see the voting pull down menus in Firefox. It works when I open the page in Google Chrome, which I rarely use. I have no problem using Google Chrome to make my votes, but I just wanted to point this out, in case anyone else was having similar issues.

Yeah, Marty Foster's star didn't shine too bright this year.

Lindsay said...

Let's just say 1) He "gave" Joe Nathan his 300th save and 2) Probably will need a bodyguard anytime he has a series in Tampa Bay from now on.

I agree with voting Wally Bell Honorable, but to have the guts and conviction that Jim Joyce did to make a potential world series changing call and to be right about it, sold it for me. We all know that if the Cardinals would have won the World Series, they never would have shut up about the "call" in Boston.

I had Bill Welke. He was involved with the pitching change fiasco, although Culbreth is more to blame being THE CC. He also had many incorrect calls on the bases/behind the plate and his strike zone is terrible. I think Marty Foster is probably a worse Umpire overall but I voted for B.Welke cause I thought he was a little worse than Marty this year

My other Votes;

Umpire of the Year- Jim Joyce
Noteworthy- John Hirschbeck, Ted Barrett
Honorable- Wally Bell, Bruce Dreckman
Most Improved- Brian Knight
Fill In- Adam Hamari
CC- Gerry Davis
Best Ejection- Joe West- Dale Sveum

What did you'all have since I can't see the votes.

Umpire of the Year: Jim Joyce
Noteworthy: Mark Wegner, Dan Iassogna
Honorable: Wally Bell, Jim Wolf
Most Improved: C.B. Bucknor (Yes, he's had his share of blown calls, but his plate work has been improving topped off by that over 94% rating in the ALDS)
Fill In: Quinn Wolcott

Couldn't decide on an ejection.

I don't remember exactly how I voted, but I here are the ones I remember:

within the 5 choices for Umpire of the Year/Noteworthy/Honorable... I know I voted for Jim Joyce, Wally Bell, Dan Iassogna, Gerry Davis, and Mike Everitt, I just don't remember who I voted for what

Most Improved: Bob Davidson (mostly because his on-field demeanor seems to have improved so greatly)

Fill In: Quinn Wolcott- he's just been so solid

CC: Joe West (I like his style)
Best EJ: Jerry Layne- Mike Scoscia
Worst: Marty Foster

Here's who I had [although I did not vote, because I'm already winning the league, thus far]:
Umpire: Paul Emmel. He's had a tremendous year. The whole Darling crew did.

Noteworthy: Mark Wegner, Mark Carlson -- I've respected Carlson's demeanor on field for some time now. Good to see him get a LCS assignment. Wegner was solid throughout the year, culminated in WS appearance.

Honorable: Wally Bell, Dan Bellino -- Bellino's quietly strung together another solid year.

Most Improved: Brian Knight -- there were a lot of Brian Knight haters on this board prior to this season. No complaints this year.

Fill-in: Quinn Wolcott -- should not be close.

CC: Joe West -- inherited numerous AAA umpires and took care of business, when necessary.
Worst Umpire: Lance Barksdale -- his strike zone is putrid and his one ejection (? - could be more, just off of the top of my head) was an awful call and an awfully-handled ejection. ... Barksdale just edged out Mike DiMuro. I don't consider Marty Foster for this award because he's BEEN in decline for some time.

Best Ejection: Joe West/Dale Sveum. Andy Fletcher/Terry Francona.

Umpire of the Year- John Hirschbeck- excellent showings in the ASG and as CC of the WS.
Noteworthy- Mark Wegner, Dan Iassogna
Honorable- Jim Joyce, Gary Darling
Most Improved- C.B. Bucknor
Fill In- Cory Blaser
CC- Joe West- love the way he takes care of business on the field

Worst- Brian O'Nora- just seemed to have a terrible/off year, and was the #2 guy in the pitching change ordeal

Lindsay said...

For me umpire of year Wally Bell noteworthy Joyce and Bellino honorable Bell most improved Angel Hernandez fill in Corey Blaser cc Hirshbeck and worst foster

Lindsay said...

That pitching change thing seemed to sink the whole crew. None of them made the playoffs.

Lindsay said...

Best Umpire: Jim Joyce
Noteworthy: Mark Wegner, Dan Iassogna
Honorable: Wally Bell, Gerry Davis
Improved: Bob Davidson
Fill-In: Quinn Wolcott
Crew Chief: John Hirschbeck
Worst: CB Bucknor
Best Ejection: Ejection 110, Jerry Layne on Mike Scioscia

Lindsay said...

Not to take anything away from Wally Bell but isn't he the one that screwed up that ruling on the pitching change? To me that alone takes him out of the best umpire contention. I did vote for him as honorable umpire though.

Lindsay said...

No. Umpires involved in the Angels-Astros May 9 game that were disciplined for improper rules interpretation/enforcement were Fieldin Culbreth (crew chief), Adrian Johnson (UIC), Bill Welke and Brian O'Nora: Culbreth Suspended; Johnson, Welke & O'Nora Fined for Pitching Change Fiasco.

Lindsay said...

O yeah that's right. Thanks for clearing that up.

About the Darling crew having a good year: does that include Jerry Meals?
