MLB Instant Replay Review 103: Bill Welke (01)

Instant Replay Review overturned 2B Umpire Bill Welke's safe cal in the top of the 5th inning of the Braves-Phillies game. With none out and one on, HP Umpire Jim Wolf called Braves batter Gerald Laird out on a 1-2 knuckle curve from Phillies pitcher A.J. Burnett for strike three, catcher Will Nieves to shortstop Jimmy Rollins as Braves baserunner Andrelton Simmons attempted to steal second base. Upon Instant Replay Review as the result of a challenge by Phillies Manager Ryne Sandberg, Welke's ruling that Rollins did not tag Simmons while Simmons was off his base was reversed, the call was incorrect. At the time of the review, the contest was tied, 0-0. The Phillies ultimately won the contest, 1-0.
