Instant Replay Review overturned HP Umpire Bob Davidson's strike (live ball) call in the bottom of the 1st and upheld Davidson's Rule 7.13 violation no-call (out) in the top of the 2nd inning of the Pirates-Cubs game. Upon Replay Review as the result of a challenge by Pirates Manager Clint Hurdle, Davidson's ruling was reversed, the call was incorrect. At the time of the review, the Cubs were leading, 1-0.

In the 2nd, with two out and one on, Pirates batter Pedro Alvarez hit a 2-2 slider from Cubs pitcher Edwin Jackson on a line drive to right fielder Nate Schierholtz, who threw to catcher John Baker as Pirates baserunner R2 Ike Davis arrived at home plate.
