HP Umpire Chris Segal ejected Royals Manager Ned Yost for arguing a foul ball call in the top of the 9th inning of the Orioles-Royals game. With one out and two on, Orioles batter Adam Jones attempted to strike a 1-2 slider from Royals pitcher Greg Holland, ruled a foul ball by Segal. Replays indicate Jones's bat did not appear to make contact with the pitch, the call was incorrect. At the time of the ejection, the Royals were leading, 1-0. The Royals ultimately won the contest, 1-0.

Major League Umpiring Debut: Jon Byrne (59)

Umpire Jon Byrne made his MLB debut during the Mets-Nationals game in Washington on May 16. Byrne joined chief Dana DeMuth's crew, serving as Friday evening's second base umpire alongside 3B Umpire Lance Barrett, 1B Umpire Ed Hickox and home plate umpire DeMuth.

Byrne is on the International League umpire roster for the 2014 season, which is his 4th season in the IL and AAA. After graduating from the Jim Evans Academy of Professional Umpiring (JEAPU) in 2004, he began his Minor League career in the 2005 Gulf Coast League, after which he worked the Northwest, Midwest, California, Eastern and Arizona Instructional Leagues before his promotion to Triple-A.

Byrne was born in Perth, Australia and becomes the first Australian native umpire to officiate in the Major Leagues. In Australia, Byrne got his start with the WA Baseball Umpires Association in 1998 after which he attended umpire's school in Adelaide; he worked the 2007-2010 Claxton Shield and 2011-2012 Australian Baseball League (ABL).

He resides in Charlotte, North Carolina and wears the sleeve uniform number 59 at the Major League level. The 5-foot-10, 143-pound May, who makes his MLB debut at the age of 30, will turn 31 in June and has an identical twin brother Kyle, who also officiated in Minor League Baseball.

Umpire Chad Whitson made his MLB debut during the Padres-Reds doubleheader in Cincinnati on May 15. Whitson joined Crew Chief Larry Vanover's crew, serving as the first base umpire alongside 3B Umpire Angel Hernandez, 2B Umpire Vanover and home plate umpire Adrian Johnson during Game 1 and as the third base umpire alongside 2B Umpire Hernandez, 1B Umpire Vanover and HP Umpire Toby Basner for the nightcap.

Whitson also worked at MLBAM's Replay Command Center in Chelsea Marketplace, New York, his debut as a Major League Umpire (albeit off-field) occurring on April 12, 2014.

Whitson is on the International League umpire roster for the 2014 season, which is his 4th season in the IL and AAA. Whitson graduated from the Harry Wendelstedt Umpire School as "Outstanding Student Runner Up" and began his Minor League career in the 2005 Appalachian League, after which he promoted to the South Atlantic, California, Arizona Instructional and Eastern Leagues before his current stop in the IL, a nearly nine-year journey to this point. He worked the 2011 and 2012 Arizona Fall Leagues.

Whitson resides in Dublin, Ohio and wears the sleeve uniform number 62 at the Major League level. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound Whitson, who makes his MLB debut at the age of 32, will turn 33 in December. His father is a 40-year local umpire who also has officiated football and basketball.

HP Umpire James Hoye ejected Orioles P Bud Norris for Throwing At Tigers batter Torii Hunter in the top of the 8th inning of the Tigers-Orioles game. With two out and one on, Tigers batter Ian Kinsler hit a home run to left field. Immediately subsequent, Hunter took a 0-1 fastball from Norris for a hit-by-pitch, resulting in a bench clearing incident. Replays indicate the pitch was located inside and belt-high, the call was irrecusable. At the time of the ejection, the Tigers were leading, 4-1. The Tigers ultimately won the contest, 4-1.

In the 1st, with none out and one on, Mariners batter Robinson Cano hit a 0-1 sinker from Rays pitcher Cesar Ramos on a line drive to left field off the wall. Upon Replay Review as the result of a request by Mariners Manager Lloyd McClendon and initiation by Crew Chief Gary Cederstrom, Barksdale's ruling was affirmed, the call was correct. At the time of the review, the Mariners were leading, 2-0.

On the very next play, Mariners batter Corey Hart hit a 0-1 sinker from Rays pitcher Ramos on a sharp line drive to deep right field and off the top of the outfield wall. Upon Replay Review as the result of a request by Mariners Manager McClendon and initiation by Crew Chief Cederstrom, Cederstrom's ruling was affirmed, the call was correct. At the time of the review, the Mariners were leading, 3-0.

In the 7th, Mariners pitcher Hernandez was ejected during a pitching change.
