Wow just about every one on the cubs team could tell that Castro was safe. Also, did you see Pat Listach's reaction?
ReplyDeleteI didn't particularly care for Brenly's closing comments either. Was the call blown? Yes. Does Sveum have a right to argue the call? No.

ReplyDeleteLOL Personally I like Brenly's style. He tells it like it is and doesn't sugarcoat a thing. He'll be the first to rag on his own team if necessary. I still remember the day he was talking about CB Bucknor after a blown call (shocker). I was laughing so hard tears were rolling down my face. He's not for everyone, but personally I enjoy him.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy Brenly for the most part. But I do get sick and tired of his attitude toward umpires. He certainly comes across as a guy who doesn't think too highly of the men in blue. Brenly absolutely HATES it when somebody in the dugout gets ejected. He firmly (yet, oh so incorrectly) believes the dugout is a sanctuary.
ReplyDeleteBrenly will praise an umpire for a great call and he will point out when they miss it.
ReplyDeleteHe does the same with the players.
As a catcher he had more direct contact with umpires than most other position players. He has coached, managed, and wears a World Series ring.
To say he just sits in the broadcast booth and disagrees with everything the umpires do is just wrong.
I'm going to have to be Winters' apologist on this one. He clearly blew it, but it looks like every element conspired to screw him out of making the correct call. The throw was off the mark and the first baseman had to stretch fully extended directly toward second. He still had to bend over deep to catch the ball just before it went in the dirt. That put a hell of a lot of extra distance between the glove and first base. And given the awkward angle the first baseman had when he caught the ball, I doubt there was much sound. Throw in the sun and shadows, and this call isn't nearly as obvious in real time as on the video.

This call was fubar. It happens so fast and like Curt said, distance is large. Tough break

ReplyDeleteTossing a coach because YOU blew it is what's wrong with the MLB crews these days. Unless the coach refuses to leave, you must take more heat then you usually would just because you BLEW the shit outta the call. A quick trigger on a call YOU blew is ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteIn Winters mind, he got the call right. He wouldn't have ejected because he blew the call because he didn't know he got it wrong at that point.

ReplyDelete1. I (a non-Cubs fan) enjoy listening to Brenly. I also remember his demeanor on the field with umpires was not overly disrespectful. I remember seeing him get tossed a time or two, but I think he's mostly disgusted with the pompous attitude that's displayed by a few umpires from time to time.
ReplyDelete2. To the poster above (7:33 PM), I think Sveum demonstrated he wasn't leaving. He wasn't yelling or screaming but persistently plugging away. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he said something to the effect of, "I'm not leaving you alone until you admit you kicked it..."
3. Terrible call. I know we all want to believe that something caused Winters to miss it, and I'll stipulate to it being weird, but he had plenty of time to sight it up, and he simply missed (what I think was) a fairly easy "safe."

As for the rulebook lawyer who said Suevm can't argue... you guys crack me up... I love that concept BUT it's real easy to be tough typing when in practice it is allowed to come on the field for outs safes.... It's been part of the game for years.. The ESPN generation would like to see every call correct but it will not happen
I'm just making the point that players and managers don't really have the right to argue, even though people like to pretend they do. For those who enjoy griping when the rules aren't enforced to the letter, how would you like it if 9.02 was being strictly enforced?

ReplyDeleteTo anoymomus 7:33pm: I think this ejection occurred when someone in the clubhouse told Suevm that the replay showed that Winters missed the call. While I agree that umpires that err should give a little longer leash (within reason), that does NOT give the manager the right to come out at a later time (in between innings) to "discuss" the call...and judging how Winters non-chalantly ran Suevm, I bet the manager made some reference to the replay WHICH is grounds for AUTOMATIC EJ in the big leagues
ReplyDeleteSveum has every right to argue. He's trying to keep his players in the game. He is managing his team to save his job. So when a call is blown he can go out there and argue. I bet you he could care less if he gets tossed, at least he knows he did everything he could to do his job the right way. This call was blown and could have impacted the outcome of the game.
ReplyDeleteKudos to Brenly as well for telling it how it is. If you don't like the broadcast, hit the mute button. Baseball is meant to be watched not heard if you have a problem with the play by play.
Brenly is not Hawk - while Hawk goes after everyone without any knowledge of anything, Brenly at least tries to give credit (and take it away) where credit is due.
