Ejection 149: Larry Vanover (3)

HP Umpire Larry Vanover ejected Cubs Manager Dale Sveum for arguing balls and strikes in the bottom of the 5th inning of the Cubs-Nationals game. With none out and one on, Nationals batter Michael Morse drew a four-pitch walk from Cubs pitcher Chris Volstad. Replays indicate all pitches during Morse's at-bat were accurately officiated, the call was correct. This ejection is not eligible for a Balls/Strikes Exemption as the only batter prior to Morse in the bottom of the 5th inning, Adam LaRoche, hit a first-pitch Voldstad sinker for a line drive single. At the time of the ejection, the Nationals were leading, 5-0. The Nationals ultimately won the contest, 9-1.

This is Larry Vanover (27)'s third ejection of 2012.
Larry Vanover now has 12 points in the UEFL (8 Previous + 2 MLB + 2 Correct Call = 12).
Crew Chief Jerry Layne now has 7 points in the UEFL's Crew Division (6 Previous + 1 Correct = 7).

This is the 149th ejection of 2012.
This is the 72nd Manager ejection of 2012.
This is the Cubs' 5th ejection of 2012, T-2nd in the NL Central (MIL 6; CHC, HOU 5; PIT, STL 4; CIN 3).
This is Dale Sveum's first ejection since July 28 (Mike Winters; QOC = Incorrect).
This is Larry Vanover's first ejection since August 8 (Chris Young; QOC = Correct).

I think Sveum started arguing after Vanover said something to Castillo. He may have argued balls and strikes but it looks to me as though Sveum was standing up for his catcher when he was ejected.

Wasn't watching, but having watched Vanover for a while my PERSONAL OPINION (note, just my own) is that Larry is a terrible ball/strike umpire and is usually all over the place. Although this call might have been correct, I'd venture to guess he was all over the place tonight.

Here's the normalised strikezone plot:

Looks like you're right. A bunch of pitches well inside called strikes, which sounds like it was the source of griping.

BTW -- here's the strikezone plot for castillo in the top of the 5th that the announcers were referring to:

Two pretty clearly inside pitches called strikes to ring him up. Whatever the official QOC, this one pretty clearly rests at Vanover's feet.

Isn't that cute. Sveum said, "Don't look into my dugout."

Next thing you know, we'll have someone post accusing Vanover of having rabbit ears.

Anon 6:06- looks like rabbit ears to me. Get Morse in the box and let's throw the next pitch.

Vanover: "I'll look where I want to look"

You tell him, Larry.

I don't understand the whole "Don't look in my dugout" sort of thing. Is the guy supposed to look straight the entire game? That would require qualities I am not sure I could muster even on my best day.

As for rabbit ears, I don't understand that phrase, actually. In other sports, if someone in the team area or bench area says something to an official, it is not ignored, nor should it be!

earlier this year cody ross was rung up on a pitch that was outside from Rodney against the Rays- Vanover has a inconsistent zone that is all there is too it

His zone is almost as bad as your grammar.

Now that the Triple A Playoffs have started here are the crews working those Playoff Series. For those of you who don't know, it is 4 man crews and the regular season is usually 3 man crews. Rovers are also ineligible for the Playoffs. Out of the 8 Umpires from this round they will select the top 4, usually 2 from each series to work the Championship series.

International League Playoffs:

Charlotte Knights VS. Indianapolis Indians:

**Mark Lollo (2 ejections)
*Toby Basner (o ejections)
*David Soucy (3 ejections)
Adam Hamari (8 ejections)

Scranton Wilkes-Barre Yankees VS. Pawtucket Red Sox

**Craig Barron (5 ejections)
Jeff Gosney (4 ejections)
*Brad Myers (5 ejections)
*Chad Whitson (3 ejections)

Pacific Coast League Playoffs:

Albuquerque Isotopes VS. Omaha Storm Chasers

**Eric Loveless (3 ejections)
*John Tumpane (5 ejections)
*Michael Lusky (1 ejection)
Matt Schaufert (5 ejections)

Reno Aces VS. Sacramento River Cats

**Mark Ripperger (2 ejections)
*Barry Larson (3 ejections)
Jason Arends (10 ejections)
Brian Sinclair (3 ejections)

**-Crew Chief of the Crew
*-Regular Season Crew Chief

Here is some analysis on these assignments. The only CC not to make the Playoffs in the IL was Chris Ward while 3 CC's did not make the Playoffs in the PCL. Those were Clint Fagan,Shaun Francis and Chris Segal. I am not that surprised about Segal becuase he was only made a CC about a month ago due to Jordan Baker becoming a Rover and Mike Jarboe disappearing (fired/injury?, I don't know). However, that did not hurt Brad Myers who became also became a CC about a month ago due to David Rackley becoming a Rover.

A correlation I am seeing with the CC's who didn't make the Playoffs is high ejection rates. Ward had 9, Francis had 8 and Fagan had 7. None of the other CC's had that many. But the high eection rate did not hurt Jason Arends who led the PCL in ejections but still is one of 3 non CC's to work the PCL Playoffs.

More ejections for a cubby as bench coach Jamie Quirk was just ejected by Jerry Lane.
