World Baseball Classic Ejections: Brian Gorman (1 - 8)

HP Umpire Brian Gorman ejected Mexico P Arnold Leon, Canada LF Rene Tosoni and Mexico Manager Rick Renteria for throwing at and fighting in the top of the 9th inning of the Canada-Mexico game. *Following the game, Gorman reported additional ejections (see below).* With none out and none on and a 9-3 lead, Canada batter Chris Robinson bunted a first pitch fastball from Leon for an infield single. In an apparent retaliation, Leon attempted, unsuccessfully, to hit  subsequent batter Tosoni, missing with two inside fastballs.

Following the ball two pitch, Gorman issued warnings to both teams. The third pitch of the at bat, another inside fastball, hit Tosoni in the back, resulting in a bench clearing brawl. During the fracas, a Team Canada coach was struck by a projectile thrown from the spectator area by a fan; the fan was escorted out of the seating area by Chase Field security and local police (Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies). At the time of the ejections, Canada was leading 9-3. Canada ultimately won the contest, 10-3.

These are Brian Gorman (9)'s first eight ejections of the 2013 World Baseball Classic.
These are the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th ejections of the 2013 World Baseball Classic.
*These eight ejections are an International Baseball and WBC record.
Rest of crew: 1B: Kwang-Nam Na (South Korea), 2B: Brian Knight (USA), 3B: Michael Ulloa (Spain)

*Following the game, crew chief and UIC Brian Gorman (USA/MLB) reported the following ejections:
1) Mexico pitcher Arnold Leon;
2) Mexico Manager Rick Renteria [warnings previously issued; Rule 8.02(d)];
3) Mexico pitcher Alfredo Aceves;

I don't understand how there are only three ejections here. Also, is it possible to get suspended and/or kicked out of the WBC?

WBC rules state that a suspended player/coach may not be reinstated for the remainder of the tournament (including Round B and the Championship Round). It is unclear who exactly will make suspension determinations (Executive VP of Baseball Operations Joe Torre is managing Team USA, which is playing Canada tomorrow).

I hope the MLB post this video.

I think more punishments will be handed down by the wbc commite after the video is reviewed

Figures...Canada in a WBC game, and a hockey fight breaks out.

Tony LaRussa has taken over Joe Torre's position while Torre is managing. So LaRussa will be the figurehead of any supplemental discipline.

Also, several Mexico players would be getting "2 minutes for instigating" here...just because Canadians know their way around a dance floor doesn't mean you can fault Canada for wiping the floor with them. Mexico started it. We just finished it.

Wait isn't Maricopa County Sheriff Joe's department? As in the SB 1070 Sheriff Joe? Team Mexico fans who participated in those shenanigans (throwing debris at Canada's dugout) might not be in USA for too much longer...

I'm chuckling here about WBC/MLBAM media choosing what videos to put online. They choose the Cruz "gesture" which is the emotional "drill 'im!" signal but not the actual fight itself. What is this pay-per-view? Lets just hope the YouTube videos don't get taken down copyright style.

8 ejections. Jeez. I am just about to watch the video but with that many ejections, it must have been one big ugly brawl.

This would be a lot of points for Brian Gorman if it was regular season!

So apparently no one's getting suspended. Good thinking. Surely the total lack of consequences will ensure this never happens again.

Where was Sheriff Joe when we needed him?
