MLB Ejection 131: Bill Welke (3; Mike Carp)

HP Umpire Bill Welke ejected Red Sox PH Mike Carp for arguing a strike three call in the bottom of the 7th inning of the Yankees-Red Sox game. With two out and two on, Carp took a 3-2 slider from Yankees pitcher
Carp expresses disbelief as Welke rules K3.
Shawn Kelley for a called third strike. Earlier in the at bat, Carp took a 1-2 slider in the dirt for a ball/HBP. After umpire crew conference, the ball call was upheld. Replays indicate the 3-2 pitch was located belt high and off the outer edge of home plate (px -1.121), the call was incorrect. At the time of the ejection, the Yankees were leading, 7-3. The Yankees ultimately won the contest, 10-3.

This is Bill Welke (52)'s third ejection of 2013.
Bill Welke now has -6 points in the UEFL (-4 + 2 MLB + -4 N = -6).
Crew Chief Fieldin Culbreth now has 2 points in the UEFL's Crew Division (2 Previous + 0 Incorrect Call = 2).

This is the 131st ejection of the 2013 MLB season.
This is the 57th Manager ejection of 2013. Prior to ejection, Carp was 0-1 in the contest.
This is the Red Sox's 8th ejection of 2013, T-1st in the AL East (BOS, TOR 8; BAL, TB 5; NYY 2).
This is Mike Carp's 2nd ejection of 2013 and first since June 5, 2013 (Andy Fletcher; QOC = Correct).
This is Bill Welke's first ejection since July 6, 2013 (Mike Redmond; QOC = Incorrect).

Wrap: New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox, 8/16/13

This is Major League Baseball. You simply cannot miss two plays in one at-bat.

Not to mention that Bill Welke has consistently proven that he is a below average umpire. Tim's worse.

Shame that generational umpires suck. Welke's are bad and Mike DiMuro could careless out there.

Lindsay said...

Well, that is good that Dimuro could care less. How much less could he care? Probably a lot.

I, however could not care less about your opinion.

He never got hit in foot the umpires were right to get togather to see if they saw it. Note: a ball can hit dirt and batter can still get hit and get award first base. Still has to attempt to get out of the way. Red sox fan but he was not hit.

Brutal strike 3 call by an awful umpire. Before instituting expanded replay MLB needs to cull the roster of the awful umpires and give more AAA guys an opportunity.

"In a moment that should provide another reason to look forward to the expansion of instant replay in baseball as early as 2014, Mike Carp lost his temper."

The opening line of that article was a rather interesting selection, given that neither a hit by pitch, nor balls/strikes will be reviewable. So, either our author, Jason Mastrodonato, has absolutely no clue what is actually in the replay proposal, or he simply couldn't pass up this opportunity to reiterate the conventional wisdom that replay is the savior of humanity. Either way, it was a pretty eye catching opening statement.

That video is completely inconclusive on the HBP. Looks to me like it hit in front of the batter. Hell, he could've felt a stone or two graze his foot, not the ball.

Even if there WAS instant replay on the pitch, he wouldn't have been awarded first.

And I wonder if there wasn't an element of the old FYC on the called third strike.

FYC?

Normally I'd agree that this is sour grapes. However, when Welke or Hernandez or the like err, I will have to agree with the gripers. Both are very disturbingly inconsistent. Welke is no longer what he once was. He's proving that this year. Balls and strikes are not reviewable (and should not be), but there are indeed "wrong" calls that (at times) affect the outcome of the game. I don't blame someone for getting tosses in those instances.

Ump Show get off the La-z-boy and show us how it's done!

Lindsay said...

Remember it's not whether you win or lose it's where you lay the blame!

i was thinking the same thing matt,

Lindsay said...

If the ball is in the dirt the batter does NOT have to avoid.

Care to cite the part of the rulebook that grants that particular exception?

Lindsay said...

Wouldn't put it past many of these umpires. And if so, they should be suspended! That's BS. Easy ejection on this blown call..

Lindsay said...

BAPA I erred because of how the rule is applied. You have to use common sense and fair play . Unless the batter LEANS or moves into the pitch you're probably going to award 1st base. By making the batter stay you are "gold plating the pitchers f-up". With the pitch in the dirt it is hard to avoid because you can't tell where the ball is going. I spoke as if I were talking to another umpire. Sorry.

Lindsay said...

I have never seen an official in any sport make an incorrect call intentionally.
I think TIm WElke is an excellent umpire please don't talk about one call from last year.

Lindsay said...

that didn't effect the outcome of the game. I am red sox fan red sox haven't been able to score ones in the last couple games pretty much. Yankees scored more than red sox they won. its not a wrong call it just not a popular call. Yes i do blame them for doing that it is there fault for getting ejected.

Lindsay said...

the rule book state you have to make an attempt to get out of the way rather the ball in air or on the ground it does not matter. Really i did a babe ruth game and a batter lean into the pitch... i dead ball ball one in the batter stayed put. the other batter had enough attempt in my view not to allow it. Many of MLB need to start enforcing this rule more.

Thanks man for the back up :)

ahh thanks.

I was watching the game from my Lazy Boy relaxing with a single malt after a long week at work. I am not afforded the luxury of doing a crappy job at work though and surviving based on seniority. Managers and players are shown the door often at MLB for not keeping up buy seldom the men in blue. Inferior umpires such as Jerry Meals at least if demoted could survive in the review booth due to accountability and integrity. Welke should be dismissed completely due to lack of integrity as I get him missing the HBP, but no way did he actually think the subsequent pitch was strike three. It was as cited on this thread a FYC. That is all you need for a pink slip and my point that plenty lower levels blues deserve their opportunities.

Lindsay said...

Surprise, surprise. Bill Welke blew another call at 3B.

Strasburg and Davey Johnson got tossed tonight when Strasburg threw behind a Braves' batter after warnings were issued by HP umpire Marvin Hudson: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130817&content_id=57330152&vkey=news_mlb&c_id=mlb

Hudson also tossed Scott Hairston later in that game. Bob Davidson tossed Jim Leyland and Mike Muchlinski tossed Pena out of the Tigers-Royals game.

Lindsay said...

Wow, busy night.

Lindsay said...

Bad call, at least it didn't affect the outcome of the game.

Lindsay said...

And by your answer you have never strapped it on. Figures.
