Ejections: James Hoye (1)

HP Umpire James Hoye ejected White Sox Manager Ozzie Guillen for arguing a fair ball (out) call in the bottom of the 6th inning of the Cubs-White Sox game. With one out and none on, White Sox batter Alexei Ramirez hit a 1-2 slider into the ground that was ruled fair. Cubs catcher Geovany Soto tagged Ramirez for the second out. Replays indicate that Soto picked the ball while it was still touching a portion of home plate and in fair territory. The 0:59 mark of the video shows the ball was touched by Soto with the ball centered exactly at the middle of the plate, while the 1:15 mark shows that the ball is in front and atop of the apex of the plate, the call was correct. At the time of the ejection, the Cubs were leading, 6-3. The Cubs ultimately won the contest, 6-3.

James Hoye now has 4 points in the Umpire Ejection Fantasy League (0 Previous + 2 MLB + 2 Correct Call = 4).

  1. Chicago Tribune is calling it a blown call: http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/whitesox/chi-guillen-ejected-over-blown-call-in-sixth-inning-20110620,0,4719813.story

Looks like the ball is still on top of the back part of the plate. I love how Ozzie is pointing to a spot about a foot from where the catcher touched the ball. Hoye should have told the Cubs catcher to stay at the plate while Ozzie gets his mask and brings it back to him. He's a joke. Him and Charlie Manuel are never right when they argue.

  3. Looked like the correct call to me. Very close though...

  4. The posted video "Hoye Runs Ozzie" is from the White Sox broadcast. If you watch the Cubs broadcast, the replays (at around 1:59:55) give a better view of what appears to be a correct call by Hoye.

  6. This is a great call. But the handling of Ozzie by Hoye was...MASTERFUL. Tossed him, let Ozzie lose his cool, and never seemed to say a word. Brilliant.

The White Sox commentary is so brutal, every time. And after the last angle shows the ball is clearly still on the plate, they still act like it is foul.

  7. @RP, this is the exact same instance of White Sox/Cubs broadcast feed bias. Remember when Joe West tossed Ozzie over a very very clear and correct obstruction call? The Cubs broadcast showed the full play, including the contact between R1 and F6. Meanwhile, the White Sox broadcast picked up the action only after the contact had occurred. Watching the Sox broadcast, you would have never known there was contact nor that obstruction was called.

  9. Hell yeah James Hoye. Great call. Guillen is such a classless jerk. I don't think that all catchers would have been as good humoured as Soto was about having his mask kicked. Carlton Fisk would have killed Guillen.

  10. This is a great call by Hoye. Ramirez wasn't looking, and there's no way Guillen could see any of it.

Part of the problem here is ignorance, and our expectation that these people actually know the rules. You have no idea how many times someone has tried to tell me a ball was foul because it touched the plate.

And while I thought the Sox commentators actually took it easy on this tape, they are horrible. The Cubs announcers are some of the best I've heard. They are fair and knowlegable, especially Bob Brenly.

  11. The only thing better than the call was ozzie punting soto's mask, classic, but total jerk move.
