I was listening to this game on the rockies radio network and Carolson gave Ethier plenty of lesh and evently he hung him self and then every body new Matingliy would follow it wasn't even a close pitch Ethier didn't have a argument I predicted this would be a correct call
ReplyDeleteStrike 3 all day, and when Andre Ethier, the teams super star got tossed, Mattingly was almost a guaranteed follow.

B) "Awfully good?" If that's not a direct contradiction, I don't know what is. In this case though, I think Vin Scully has earned the right to directly contradict himself.
Absolutely unprofessional thin skinned umpire. He kept the argument going while Eithier was walking away. If he had shut his mouth the argument woulda been over.

Having now watched the clip, overall that was a textbook example of good broadcasting. As for the call, it was plainly a strike, and I give credit to Carlson for giving Mattingly as long a leash as he did.

ReplyDeleteAbsolutely unprofessional comment. You blast away at the umpire despite the fact that it was Ethier who started an argument over a pitch that Stevie Wonder knows was a strike.
All the readers who came onto this website to read a ridiculous complaint about Mark Carlson certainly spent their time well.
And I guess Carlson made Ethier swing at pitches 2, 3 and 5 after calling pitch 1 a ball. This is totally laughable. Ethier has about as good an idea of the zone as the above mentioned Stevie Wonder comment. It is a total embarrassment to even think about arguing on this at bat. Just another crybaby primadonna. He just had to get in that one last cheapshot and then tried to blame Carlson who never moved of getting in his face. Only one getting in someone's face was Ethier. Pitiful that Mattingly even came out to support this at bat and cheap shot primadonna.

ReplyDeleteGood call and proper ejection by Carlson. In all aspects, a very long leash by Carlson; he only dumps him after he turns his head back to get in a parting comment. Mattingly got to say his thoughts also; when a manager lingers that long on a balls/strikes dispute he's asking for the hook.
ReplyDeleteHey Jeremy or Gil could we get Carlson's numbers for the game cuse Ethier wasn't the only player who questined Carlson's strike zone just the only one who had a conversation longer than two sentences. Not that i thought it didnt seem consistent but maybe a little small at times but a pitcher with no control doesn't get those borderline calls

ReplyDeleteI was just impressed that I don't seem to recognize this umpire. And Scully said he's been in the league for 13 years? He must be doing something right! Maybe the rest should take a lesson...
ReplyDeleteHard to fault anything he did there.. Seemed like he was responded to a question... he didn't take his mask off.... I supoose he could have gone to the locker room and let things settle down.... then come back out when all the players were happy... But other then that what do you expect... There are a lot of people on here that would have really hated baseball umpires PRE ESPN... yes baseball did exist before cable!!

Thx Gil for the numbers it confirms what i thought a lot of pointless argueing by playets on both sides Carlson usually has a good zone and obviously had one today but he got a lot of dirty looks and had a few conversations

ReplyDeleteWhat is Either arguing about?! Carlson gave him plenty of chances to shut his mouth and keep walking. Saying he is thin skinned is crazy. Try getting talked to like that and see if you dont react. As for Mattingly, wished he would've saved an ejection over a worthy argument.

ReplyDeleteAnd kudos to Mark Carlson, he's one of the better veteran umpires in the league who is very patient against confrontation. I believe I read somewhere that he served time in the Marines, which maybe is why he displays his patience. In my view, he's better than a few umpires who are quick-triggered like Hernandez or any of the AAA umpires like Campos. To think Carlson is thin-skinned is like Bob Davidson doesn't call balks every other game.

ReplyDeleteWell, I wouldn't say all AAA umpires are thin-skinned. I certainly don't think Alan Porter is. Also, these comments are not always approved prior to being posted.
As for Ethier, if his aunt did indeed die, it definitely would explain him being a little irritable.
If Ethier's Aunt passed away, maybe he should have taken the day off. The idea of using the passing of a relative to excuse his behavior is shameful. That would be like excusing an umpire's behavior because one of his kids is sick at home.

I think Either just wanted to get ejected because he knows gil is a dodger fan and he wanted to make sure he got tossed on a call that the umpire got right. haha.
ReplyDeleteComments are unscreened. The only time we really use screened comments are during case plays. However, just because they are unscreened doesn't give free reign to make tasteless comments. They'll be removed when seen, as Gil did.

ReplyDeleteDavidson has been on his best behavior. Surprisingly Layne, Davidson and wendlstedt all don't have an ejection yet. Although last year Wendlsedt did not have his first ejection until July 31st and ended up with eight. So you never know.

Davidson just completely blew a gasket and ejected Charlie Manuel. No call involved -- the Phillies dugout was yelling at Davidson for blocking F2's path to an uncaught third strike. Some great audio on the Phillies broadcast from Davidson, "You think I was trying to block his ass?" and then a bunch of F yous back and forth between Davidson and Manuel. Great theater.
