Ejection 091: Dan Iassogna (4)

HP Umpire Dan Iassogna ejected Rays Manager Joe Maddon for arguing a ball call in the top of the 7th inning of the Indians-Rays game. With two out and two on, Indians batter Jason Kipnis hit a 2-2 fastball from Rays pitcher Jake McGee into center field for a RBI single. During the at bat on the 1-2 pitch (fourth pitch of the at bat), Iassogna called McGee's fastball a ball. Replays indicate the 1-2 pitch was over the outside portion of the plate and at the knees (px value of -0.608 and a lower bound, upper bound of [-0.9311, -0.7510], the call was incorrect. At the time of the ejection, the contest was tied, 4-4. The Indians ultimately won the contest, 10-6.

This is Dan Iassogna (58)'s fourth ejection of 2012.
Dan Iassogna now has 4 points in the UEFL (6 Previous + 2 MLB + -4 Incorrect Call = 4).
Crew Chief Dale Scott now has 6 points in the UEFL's Crew Division (6 Previous + 0 Incorrect Call = 6).

This is the 91st ejection of 2012.
This is the 46th Manager ejection of 2012.
This is Joe Maddon's first ejection of 2012, and first since September 16, 2011 (Hunter Wendelstedt, QOC = Incorrect).
This is Dan Iassogna's first ejection since June 24th (Mike Scioscia; QOC = Correct).

now I'm not a crew chief, so I don't know what they are told...but dale scott looks like a total tool watching this discussion take place. i would think that once someone is tossed, the CC should get him off the field??

  3. As long as it's one on one and not heated/violent, the crew chief isn't going to get involved. He's there in case it does. Stepping in there could just escalate the situation.

  4. i love how dan handles this ejection...TEXTBOOK

  5. Not really "Text Book". When he turned his back and started walking back to the plate the CC should of guided the manager to his dugout area. Even though it was "heated" he got his word in for a decent time and when the umpire don't want to talk or explain any further it is the crew chiefs job to get the manager back to the clubhouse. This situation is not horrible by any means but it's not textbook either. The CC didn't really do anything.
Side note... These ejections are the worst for an umpire! Waiting til the Manager gets out to the mound all the while starring at you. Then you waiting a bit and knowing that once I walk 60ft I'm gonna have to toss this guy! Im more of a spur the moment ejection guy lol

  6. *even though it was NOT HEATED

  7. It's about time maddon got ejected. The rays have been struggling all year and maddon has only questioned a couple calls. When the team is struggling for no reason, manager needs to show he still has faith in them.

  8. Shouldn't Iassogna only have 4 points, not 6?

    Very Very Ugly.

  10. Here's a 1996 photograph that includes Dale Scott with his usual hand on chin pose as his colleague Durwood Merrill ejects Lou Piniella

  12. This crew again. I sense a recurring theme.

  13. that chart almost seems off.. it's like the plate was moved two inches... just seeems bizarre it would be off by that much and the entire right side of the zone would be balls while 5 inches on the other side are strikes

  14. Looks like Dale didn't get the uniform memo in '96!

  15. Lol - actually, I think he worked a softball game the night before and just used the same shirt ;)

  16. Thursday kudos: Chris Conroy calling a knuckleballer (RA Dickey) on the plate for the first time on a 90-plus degree afternoon in Washington. That can't be fun. Throw in how the Nats started a nasty lefty (Gio Gonzalez) and it must get even rougher.

  17. More kudos to Conroy, who's strike zone was outstanding Yesterday. This is better than most Pro guys turn in. Conroy is someone who has impressed me quite a bit these last few years. I hope he gets an MLb job soon because plate jobs like this are what MLB needs to see.
