MLB to Test Expanded Instant Replay in New York Games

MLB will test expanded instant replay systems during games at Yankee Stadium and Citi Field next week, though at this stage, the technology will not affect any in-game calls, according to a Yahoo! Sports report.

The advanced systems, which have been installed at New York stadiums to minimize cost during the test-only phase, will consist of one radar-based and one camera-based system. Both the radar and camera systems resemble Hawk-Eye, the instant replay system presently used to judge balls hit down the line in tennis.

Though the new baseball CBA included proposals to expand instant replay to include Fair/Foul, Catch/No Catch (Trap) and Stadium-wide Fan Interference calls, MLB declined to expand the scope of instant replay for the 2012 season, citing a lack of logistical and realistic ways of implementing the technology.

Still, MLB Commissioner Bud Selig predicted, "We're now going to add [instant replay] on trapped balls ... [and] bullets hit down the first and third base lines."

If tests in New York, which will serve as tools for analysis and observation only, are successful, expect instant replay—estimated to cost between $30 and $40 million—to once again be in the winter discussion.

  1. It's truly about time we get expanded replay

  2. This instant reply is going to destroy America's past time. This is pathetic.

  3. Boo hoo to all of the old-timers and umpire apologists who don't want instant replay in the game.

Not only do we need instant replay, but all balls/strikes should be called by Brooks Baseball.

Umpires were a necessary evil in baseball. Now, they're no longer necessary.

  4. @Anon 12:58: Umpires are no longer necessary? The article says nothing of the sort. Good job with the reading comprehension.

And even if umpires were being completely removed from the game, how are you going to get a computer to call obstruction? Or fan interference? Tags? Passing another runner? Illegal bats? Pitcher defacing the ball? Traps? Runner placement? The list goes on.

  5. I know this is a really big thing, but WOW! 30-40 million dollars seems a little too much.

  6. Speaking Yankee stadium, the crew working that series will be HP: Paul Emmel, Scott Barry, Jerry Meals, Gary Darling. Would love to see Darling and bobby go at it again. We remember what happened in philly, Darling ejected Bobby V then spit gum at bobby by mistake. funny. Good CC.

  8. @BAPACop, put three upstairs in the booth allowing them to see all replays and angles for calls. They can have one assistant on the field, if needed, to send out messages, examine bats, etc.

By the way, I never said 'the article said' anything. Nice job on YOUR reading comprehension. Do us a favor and just leave the jokes and insults for real comedians.

  9. @Anon 5:02: You said "Now, they're no longer necessary." I figured you must have got that idea from the article. It seemed implied. After all, why would you be bringing it up? It would be like me coming in and posting a comment on this page saying "power cords are no longer necessary". Either I'm talking about something mentioned in the article or I've decided to post about something unrelated to the post. I assumed you hadn't decided on a whim to post in an unrelated thread, so certainly you must be talking about the article? But I see I was wrong, and when you said umpires are "no longer necessary" you hadn't got that from the article and instead had decided to go off-topic. I apologize for assuming a comment on an article was talking about said article. How silly of me.

By the way, if not from the article where DID you get that idea? Has it been shown in some capacity that such a total removal is being considered? I'd like to know why you decided to bring that up in this context. Because you yourself even admit now that umpires ARE necessary; although in a limited capacity. So which is it? Umpires or no umpires?

  11. They have been using instant replay in the LLWS for 2 years now (I know 2 years ago they did for sure).

I think I recall hearing that the average time spent on each replay was something like 1.5 minutes - though I may be wrong on that stat.

  12. Jeff Kellogg ejected Bick Showalter and Mark Reynolds for arguing a safe call at first base.

  13. Box Score is wrong, I just watched the video and Carapazza threw out Reynolds and Foster threw out Buck. Second year in a row Foster has heaved Showalter. The funny thing is neither was involved in the play. Kellogg called Jhonny Prealta out at first, Jim Leyland came out to argue so Kellogg conversed with HP Umpire Timmons and Timmons overruled him saying Reynolds was off the base. RAfter the call, Reynolds chucked his glove and Vic threw him out from second base, the Showalter went nuts and was thrown out by Foster. Very interesting all around.
