Ejection 155: Todd Tichenor (2)

HP Umpire Todd Tichenor ejected Nationals pitcher Gio Gonzalez for arguing balls and strikes in the top of the 1st inning of the Marlins-Nationals game. With two out and none on, Marlins batter Giancarlo Stanton hit a 3-1 fastball from Nationals pitcher Ross Detwiler for a home run. Replays indicate the 2-1 pitch was located at the hollow of the knee and over the heart of home plate (sz_bot = 1.620, pz = 1.662), the call was incorrect. At the time of the ejection, the Marlins were leading, 2-0. The Nationals ultimately won the contest, 7-6, in 10 innings.

This is Todd Tichenor (97)'s second ejection of 2012.
Todd Tichenor now has 2 points in the UEFL (4 Previous + 2 MLB + -4 Incorrect Call = 2).
Crew Chief Brian Gorman now has 7 points in the UEFL's Crew Division (7 Previous + 0 = 7).

  1. Hey Gill or jeremey what pitch do those numbers correspond to.

  2. The 2-1 pitch, which was ruled ball 3.

  3. gio ejected? Hard to believe- remember Tichenor's ejection of Francona/Varitek as a rookie? A small strike zone is a speciality of him.

  4. In the first? From the bench? Gio must've really wanted to hang inside the clubhouse today.

  5. BTW, Gil, why has Brooks Baseball only been putting up data AFTER the game is over? Last season, it was great to change things as the games went along.

  6. Listening to these MASN announcers getting embarrassed over and over again in Washington saying something wrong in real-time and then getting exposed on the pitch tracker in replay, "and a very high strike" to Bernadina = a pitch clearly in the zone on the tracker. "If that's a strike to Bernadina, that has to be a strike to Miami" = a pitch clearly above the strike zone on the tracker.

No wonder computers would never work, the broadcasters wouldn't agree with any call against their team!

I believe he ran Gardenhire and someone else from the Twins the same game! I recally Francona's basis of argument being something like, "Hey, even THEY think you're screwing the pooch!"

That being said, that game aside I think Tichenor is quickly emerging as one of the better umpires. We seldom hear from him (a good thing). And here I am happy he got the call incorrect (fantasy HR for me!).

  8. LOL "Bob Davidson gave me the big time deke right there, the way he stuck his nose in there staying with the play, I thought he was going to bang him out." To me, the way Bob Davidson stayed with the play (SB by Reyes in the 9th) is exactly what umpires are trained to do.

  11. The "infamous" Twins/BoSux game from a couple years ago. To be honest, as pervasive as my disdain for the BoSux is, I thought Francona got screwed here (as did Gardenhire). To be honest, I am surprised Beckett was not tossed (even as rapidly as Varitek intervened) based on his overly-demonstrative uncalled for language. Thought Redmond's hook was a bit rapid...But then again I can't imagine being on that size stage!

  14. What a coincidence. Both Carlson and Tichenor had their last ejection on May 13 and now they both have an ejection Today.

  15. @Russ I'm anon 2:07 and I thought that was pretty funny.

  16. Not sure what Carlson saw there. One of the more obvious missed calls of the season.

  25. I remember the Twins/BoSox game like it was yesterday. You can praise his ump skills as much as you'd like; but until MLB can look at a guy like this and simply say "if you don't check your damn ego and agenda at the door..." then I don't care how well he calls the game. Nobody pays to see the ump. NOBODY!!! (and I've officiated many more contests than I've played)

  26. The Original Ruling has been challenged.

This appeal has been summarily denied due to lack of overwhelmingly clear and convincing evidence to suggest a probable supersession of UEFL Rule 6-2-b-2 (Miller Rule).

The Original Ruling has been affirmed, 1-0.

That is one of the worst comments in the history of this site. Period. He had four bozos barking and screaming at him and calling attention to him, and it's his fault? Give me a break.
