Ejection 161: Clint Fagan (1)

HP Umpire Clint Fagan ejected Marlins left fielder Justin Ruggiano for arguing a strike three call in the top of the 2nd inning of the Marlins-Phillies game. With none out and two on, Ruggiano took a 2-2 fastball from Phillies pitcher Cliff Lee for a called third strike. Replays indicate the strike three pitch was located thigh high and off the inner edge of home plate (px = -1.341), the call was incorrect. At the time of the ejection, the contest was tied, 0-0. The Phillies ultimately won the contest, 3-1.

  1. Wow not a good start for Clint Fagan. Pitch was 6 inches inside.

  2. This was an awful ejection by Fagan. All Ruggiano said was either "that pitch is in" or "That's BS" Neither is an ejectable offense IMO.

  3. Why is it that announcers feel the need for calling out inexperienced umpires? Instead of "Clint Fagan the young umpire threw out..." why not "Clint Fagan the umpire threw out..." The latter sounds more professional in my opinion.

  4. Russ

How the hell do you know what he said? He didnt throw him out until he got to the dugout so he must of said more than that.

  5. The Phillies showed him talking from the dugout. He wasn't even yelling or anything but he was talking in the direction of Fagan. Just didn't look warranted IMO and I will usually defend Umpires.

  6. SJR,

same reason they might say veteran umpire or rookie player,
don't know it's so much calling them out, but letting you know how long they've been at the mlb level,

  7. its all about experience- if joe west or derryl cousins were in that situation would either of them throw him out. Maybe- maybe not

  8. Cody Ross and Bobby V just got tossed by Alfonzo Marquez

  9. Apparently Jerry Royster as well. The Box Score doesn't say so but that is what Michael Kay said.

  10. I agree, Kay did say that. This crew has 5 ejections in two games of the two series between these two teams. Remember Hallion ejected ex red sox j becket, and bobby V was ejected by Brian O nora.

  11. The Box Score has been updated to include Royster. That is 14 ejections for the Red Sox this year. Yikes!

  12. I would like to know what Guillen and the HP umpire were talking about...

  14. I watched without sound..Call was not great but it appeared Clint handled himself great.

  15. So Russ,

Where exactly were you sitting in the Marlins dugout to have all of this insider information???

  16. The pitch looked better on the video than on the tracking boxes.

I don't think the player got run for saying any one thing, but rather for continuing to talk. Run your mouth long enough, you go.

Clint looked like he handled Ozzie quite well. Ozzie also looked pretty quiet, he handled things well too.

That's Clint's 8th game this month, 4th with the Winters crew, 2nd plate this week. Being made crew chief seems to have slowed him down, but he's finally getting some looks.

  17. He "handled himself well"? He would've handled himself a lot better if he didn't have a shocker behind the plate:

Strikes a good 6 inches off the plate, and pitches called balls right down the middle. Terrible.

  18. I'm gonna cut Fagan a break on his strike zone. Yes it was bad but this was only his third plate job ever in the MLB. There are probably some nerves involved. I agree with other posters he handled the ejection well but I still believe it was unwarranted.

  19. @Russ -- Ok, a fair point. I didn't realise he was quite so new to the big leagues. I agree his situation handling was ok. Hopefully he settles a bit in his pitch calling.
