MiLB: Triple-A Playoffs, Semifinal Round

Now that the Triple-A Playoffs have started, here are the crews working those Playoff Series. This information comes to us courtesy of UEFL'er and MiLB expert contributor Russ.

Triple-A postseason umpiring consists of four, 4-man crews while during the regular season, 3-man crews are generally employed. Regular season rovers are ineligible for the Playoffs. Out of the 8 Umpires from this semifinal round, PBUC will select the top 4, usually 2 from each series, to work the Championship series in each respective League.

International League Playoffs:
Charlotte Knights VS. Indianapolis Indians:
**Mark Lollo (2 ejections)
*Toby Basner (0 ejections)
*David Soucy (3 ejections)
Adam Hamari (8 ejections)

Scranton Wilkes-Barre Yankees VS. Pawtucket Red Sox
**Craig Barron (5 ejections)
Jeff Gosney (4 ejections)
*Brad Myers (5 ejections)
*Chad Whitson (3 ejections)

Pacific Coast League Playoffs:
Albuquerque Isotopes VS. Omaha Storm Chasers
**Eric Loveless (3 ejections)
*John Tumpane (5 ejections)
*Michael Lusky (1 ejection)
Matt Schaufert (5 ejections)

Reno Aces VS. Sacramento River Cats
**Brian Larson (3 ejections)
*Mark Ripperger (2 ejections)
Jason Arends (10 ejections)
Brian Sinclair (3 ejections)

**-Crew Chief of the Crew
*-Regular Season Crew Chief
Russ has also provided us with excellent analysis:
Here is some analysis on these assignments. The only CC not to make the Playoffs in the IL was Chris Ward while 3 CC's did not make the Playoffs in the PCL. Those were Clint Fagan,Shaun Francis and Chris Segal. I am not that surprised about Segal becuase he was only made a CC about a month ago due to Jordan Baker becoming a Rover and Mike Jarboe disappearing (fired/injury?, I don't know). However, that did not hurt Brad Myers who became also became a CC about a month ago due to David Rackley becoming a Rover.
A correlation I am seeing with the CC's who didn't make the Playoffs is high ejection rates. Ward had 9, Francis had 8 and Fagan had 7. None of the other CC's had that many. But the high eection rate did not hurt Jason Arends who led the PCL in ejections but still is one of 3 non CC's to work the PCL Playoffs.

  1. I made one mistake. Larson is the Crew Chief in the Sacramento series, not Ripperger.

  2. Fagan isn't working because he's in the big leagues right now. He was originally selected. He's in Bos and was in WSH earlier this week.

  3. Ejection rate has nothing to do with selection for playoffs. With both leagues it is based on seniority except for Soucy as he got them for being a CC all season. Ward was selected however turned them down.

  4. If an umpire works the All Star Game and is from the PCL, they then do NOT work the playoffs. Fagen was never selected and is in the big leagues. Segal was a defacto Chief and doesn't have the seniority. Jarboe had nasty break of his finger and was unable to come back and Sinclair replaced him. Francis (worked the All Star game) ended the season with 10 ejections. Loveless, Lollo, Ripperger and Barron are working the Triple A National Championship game.

  5. I think Larson's first name might be Barry.

  6. Yes, it is Barry Larson not Brian! Thanks for everybody's info. I was just making observations based on the assignments. I even said it might just be a coincidence, but three of the 4 CC's who aren't working the Playoffs had the highest number of ejections for all CC's. I was not trying to knock anybody with my comments, I was just pointing out interesting observations. Good luck to all who were selected! I am rooting for you.

  7. I also wonder why Ward would turn the Playoffs down? That seems odd to me. Also, if it is based on seniority how come Gosney made it and is only in his second year and Chad Whitson made it last year in his first season? Or are those rules just for the PCL? It would make sense since Schaufert, Arends and Sinclair are all in at least their third season, and maybe more, I don't know.

  8. Gosney, Whitson, Hamari were given playoffs as there were no other senior guys left? Ward an the rovers are they only guys senior to them and they are not doing playoffs!

  9. Does this mean Hal will get to go up before Hamari since Hamari is blocked out by the playoffs.

  10. ...and on another note the following umpires have been selected to work Arizona Fall League:

    Nick Bailey
    Jordan Baker
    Sean Barber
    Seth Buckminster
    Travis Carlson
    Andy Dudones
    Will Little
    Ben May
    Chris Segal
    Stu Shurewater
    Chad Whitson
    Quinn Wolcott

  11. Seems like some seniority system is fine if not used as a parting gift. Also seems like no AFL assignment within 3 years means the end also, after checking stu.
