  1. I still want to know why Andy Fletcher #49 is the only umpire brought up in 1999 that has not been chosen to work in the post season

  2. I think the best wager with Fletcher is that for whatever reason, MLB has not rated him high enough for the postseason. That and he was injured once again this year with that broken wrist.

  3. I have wondered about Fletcher myself. It is strange that he has not once been given the opportunity for the post season because it is not like his umpiring is so bad that it calls attention to him. When was the last time anyone was up in arms about Andy Fletcher? He seems to go mostly under the radar.

  4. is there a database to see all the umpires' playoff records?

  5. How is Jim Wolf not working any playoff games this year? He is easily better than some of these guys, especially some of the ones that worked the Division Series'.

  6. How about a crew of Al Barlick, Augie Donnatelli, Shag Crawford, Ed Vargo, Doug Harvey and John McSherry?

  7. So winters and layne have the plate(s) tonight?

  8. I would think Kellogg and Darling have Game 1's. can't confirm though.

  9. The crews should go in reverse order.

    So Kellog's crew would be

    Kellogg
    Drake for game 2
    Holbrook
    Nelson
    Cederstrom
    Winters
    Kellogg for Game 7

  10. And the WS crew is probably being notified today so they can make arrangements for any upcoming travel. One guess would be Brian O'Nora after his sterling plate job. It is about time for him.

  11. I again put a wager out there saying that Gerry Davis, having already been named ASG CC, will be named WS CC and then retire on top.

  12. @ 2:43 PM... Holbrook is in the Championship Series. Atlanta Braves are not! :)

  13. Drake for game 2 is an interesting situation. Improved from his antics last season but still has an unpredictable zone. Had a huge zone for Felix's perfecto and much of last season. But it seems ever since joining West's crew his zone has tightened. Jake Westbrook could not buy a strike with Drake's zone earlier this season when pitching against the Phillies at Busch.

  14. I'm glad MLB didn't gave into the media hype and pressure to take Holbrook off the ALCS crew list. Sure enough, the big story around sensationalist crazies ESPN, FOX Sports and the other talking heads is that infield fly Holbrook is on the crew. Um hello, these are exactly the same crews as the wild card crews. It would be a bigger story if he wasn't working those games and you can bet the World Umpires Association union would have filed a grievance with the league. No brainer to leave Sam on the team, after all, the call in Atlanta was correct.

  15. The reason Andy Fletcher has never worked in the postseason isn't really that tough to figure out. It's because he's brutal.

If your judgement isn't good, you better have a great build and really crisp/athletic mechanics. Fletch has neither.

  16. Plumber,

Do you have any specific examples of Fletcher being brutal? Is it his strikezone? I am not even doubting you at all, it is just that Fletcher for the most part goes relatively unnoticed and I have always wondered why he has never worked a playoff series. I mean Marty Foster,Mike Dimuro and Bob Davidson have worked playoff series and I would not say Flecther is worse than any of them. I'm not sating Flecther should make it every year but you would think he would have worked 1-2 playoff series by now.

  17. In the old days, no matter how good or bad, the playoffs were rotated and all the umpires up their now would have an LCS and WS. When they went to a merit system that ended. An umpire could be busting his butt the best he knows how and be rated between 50 & 55 every year and never get a special playoff event, yet never, ever be rated over 60. Some umpires could be rated from 60-68 almost every year, yet once in a while have a great year that gets them to 30-35 and a playoff assignment. There could easily be a few guys stuck between 45-55 every year who might just never ever see a special event but never ever in their career be in the bottom 10 to 20% of the 68 umpires total.

  18. 2 of the WS crew last year, Layne (cc) and Barrett scored less that 90% in their DS plate games, but none the less received the call for the premier event.

  19. I am glad the rotation system is gone. That system allowed for the likes of Bob Davidson and other sub par Umpires to work a world series.

  20. The thing with Barrett is even though his numbers weren't that good, his zone eval score is going to be a lot better. Barrett is an Umpire who calls a lot of strikes and is very consistent about it. As long as he is relatively consistent, a lot of those pitches get counted as correct since that always is a strike for Barrett. Looking at this year, a plate performance like Joyce's or Emmel's will not at all help their World series chances while a plate performance like Bell will not hurt as much because much like Barrett, Bell called a big but consistent zone.

  21. I know he had a subpar game behind the plate in the Division Series, but I hope Jim Joyce gets a World Series assignment. He's still one of the best in the game, and he hasn't done a World Series since 2001.

    ReplyDelete
  22. subpar is being generous. He had the worst accuracy percentage in the entire round and there were 20 plate jobs. I just don't see Joyce working the World Series this year. But I could be wrong, it's not like I haven't been in the past.

  23. I'd be surprised if MLB really would disqualify an umpire from the World Series due solely to their QuesTec -- ahem, Zone Evaluation -- score from the Division Series. I'd think before the postseason, MLB has a tentative list of all series, including WS, and barring anything untoward happening like a Cuzzi Twins/Yankees call in left field, would stick to their guns.

  24. my WS guess: demuth as CC , along with west, hallion, hernandez, bell, and wegner.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I don't pretend to understand the process, but wouldn't West be CC if he works the World Series based on seniority?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Layne CC last year would come under total years seniority, but not under CC seniority as Cedarstrom became CC in 2008 and Layne in 2010.

  27. You all are correct Andy who by the way is one of the reasons I am a division I college umpire is a personal friend, does go unnoticed for the most part. He was injured this year but that should not be a deciding factor on selection he is a fine umpire and deserves to be selected. Hell for that matter Hunter Wendelsted is really horrible but made it to the bigs because of who his dad was and he was on What's crew I'm AAA.

  28. I know Jim Joyce is a fan favorite for his post-blown-perfect-game-blubber-fest at the plate meeting...but the guy just isn't that good.

When have you ever told yourself "when I walk on a field...I want to look like Jim Joyce out there!"??

    ReplyDelete
  29. @The Plumber...I've never said that, but it would be nice to sound like him sometimes :-)

    ReplyDelete
  30. how on earth does Rob Drake get an LCS when a guy like Hickox has worked 3 DS and started on RF line each time. Meaning he has yet to work a plate in the post season. Yet they give Drake one???
