MLB Ejection 035: CB Bucknor (2; Clint Hurdle)

HP Umpire CB Bucknor ejected Pirates Manager Clint Hurdle for arguing a safe call in the top of the 11th inning of the Astros-Pirates game. With one out and two on, Astros batter Matt Dominguez hit a 1-2 fastball
Bucknor listens to Hurdle's extended objection.
from Pirates pitcher Bryan Morris on the ground to second baseman Neil Walker, who threw to catcher Russell Martin in an attempt to retire Astros baserunner R3 Jason Castro on a slide at home plate. Replays indicate that after his catch, Martin's glove failed to make contact with Castro's person on the swipe tag attempt until Castro's left foot had already touched home plate, the safe call (run scored) was correct. At the time of the ejection, the Astros were leading, 3-2. The Astros ultimately won the contest, 3-2, in 11 innings.

This is CB Bucknor (54)'s second ejection of 2013.
CB Bucknor now has 6 points in the UEFL (2 Previous + 2 MLB + 2 Correct Call = 6).
Crew Chief Dale Scott now has 2 points in the Crew Division (1 Previous + 1 Correct Call = 2).

This is the 35th ejection of 2013 and first extra innings ejection of 2013.
This is the 17th Manager ejection of 2013.
This is the Pirates' 4th ejection of 2013, 1st in the NL Central (PIT 4; MIL 2; CHC 1; CIN, STL 0).

  1. Dear MLB:

What have you done with the real CB? Please return him...this guy isn't as much fun.

  2. Easy call. Clint Hurdle is an A-hole.

  3. great call,
    not real sure the argument,
the ball beat him, but it's a tag play and watching it in real time, you could tell he was safe,
    cb handled it perfectly,

  4. this ejection reminds me so much of gary darling running clint last year...clint refuses to say the magic words as his blood boils and boils...cb just says "you had your say" over and over again...i love the ej mechanic, its as calm as a swinging strike call

  6. not sure if this is the right place to post this but I don't know where else to do it since there is no contact us link.... Anyway, how come nobody has any case points in the UEFL standings? Sorry if there's a better place for me to post this - I couldn't find it.

  7. Great call CB! I always though that he got a bum wrap for his very small strike zone and some of the mistakes he made at first base in the 2009 ALDS.

  8. Check under standings in the UEFL Portal. The points are broken down there.

  9. I think Hurdle was arguing because the Pirates were playing like crap. One of them "not having their manager will somehow make them play better" moments.

  10. I'm glad to CB watching the entire play and not just jumping to "out" just because the ball beat him to the bag. I feel if Russell Martin was actually blocking the plate, they would would have gotten the out. Great call.

  11. Funny, I was thinking the same thing. I will say this, for as much crap as I give CB (I have him in the lowest tier of top performers, the lowest 10%, along with Angel Hernandez, Jerry Meals, and Phil Cuzzi) he definitely is not confrontational and always engages the coaches respectfully.

  12. He got the call right, he handled the situation well - but did anyone else notice that his safe call was happening so fast?! That's dangerous timing.
PS - I respect the manager's actions, tight play, catcher was upset. Get tossed to protect your catcher and to pump up your team.

  13. I have to disagree with you on one point: Hurdle was not tossed protecting Martin. Martin had been out of the conversation for a long time before Hurdle got tossed; he can't have been protecting someone who no longer needed protecting.
