MLB Ejection 091, 092: C Fairchild (3, 4; Putkonen, Leyland)

HP Umpire Chad Fairchild ejected Tigers pitcher Luke Putkonen and Manager Jim Leyland for throwing at White Sox batter Alexei Ramirez in the top of the 6th inning of the White Sox-Tigers game. With two out and none on, Ramirez took a 0-0 sinker from Putkonen high and inside for ball one. Warnings were not previously been issued after Tigers batter Prince Fielder was nearly hit by a pitch by Chris Sale while White Sox batter Josh Phegley hit a grand slam prior to Ramirez's at bat, the call was irrecusable. At the time of the ejection, the White Sox were leading, 5-3. The White Sox ultimately won the contest, 6-3.

These are Chad Fairchild (75)'s third and fourth ejections of 2013.
Chad Fairchild now has 12 points in the UEFL (8 Previous + 2*[2 MLB + 0 Irrecusable] = 12).
Crew Chief Jeff Kellogg now has 6 points in the UEFL's Crew Division (4 Previous + 2 Irrecusable = 6).

These are the 91st and 92nd ejections of the 2013 MLB season.
This is the 41st player ejection of 2013. Prior to his ejection, Putkonen's line was 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R.
This is the 42nd Manager ejection of 2013.
This the Tigers' 2nd/3rd ejections of 2013, T-2nd in the AL Central (CLE 5; DET, KC 3; CWS, MIN 1).
This is Luke Putkonen's first career ejection.
This is Jim Leyland's first ejection since September 16, 2012 (Brian Knight; QOC = Y).
This is Chad Fairchild's first ejection since April 20, 2013 (Cody Ross, Kirk Gibson; QOC = Y).

  1. Not quite sure why Ramirez wasn't ejected for charging the mound. Also not quite sure what's wrong with Leyland. With the tantrum over the changed call at first a while back and this one here, he seems determined to make himself look like a fool.

  2. The Tigers have now been in three situations like this in the past couple of weeks. Clearly Sale is not trying to hit Prince, he's just pitching him inside. If you want retaliation then throw at his front him, but throwing behind him is unacceptable. Fairchild, Kellogg, Cooper, and Little all handled this very well, especially the first two. Leyland is just upset his team is so inconsistent.

  3. A new meaning to the term "slammed out of the game".

  4. I agree that Leyland looks like a fool here. I understand he didn't like the pitch to Fielder. I understand that the game will police itself but your idiot pitcher is to blame here. If you actually hit him instead of it being 2 feet behind him, probably only getting warnings.

  5. Speaking of Fairchild, All-Star Game Umpires:

    HP: John Hirschbeck

    1B: Wally Bell

    2B: Larry Vanover

    3B: Paul Emmel

  6. While Leyland looks like a fool, I can certainly understand him staying out there for so long. I've done it as a manager, and I've done it as a pitcher after being tossed and having a coach who was too much of a coward to go out there. The next pitcher only gets a certain number of warm up pitches after an ejection was my understanding, so as a manager, I'm going to buy him as much time after an ejection to get loose in the bullpen.

  7. You understand incorrectly. A pitcher gets as many pitches as he needs on the game mound after an ejection.

  8. Sorry, about that, I was always taught growing up that after an injury, they got as many as needed, but after an ejection, it was treated as the beginning of an inning. I've certainly had it pulled on me while coming in after a pitcher who has been tossed. I stand corrected. Much appreciated.

  9. Can't be ejected for charging the mound when you don't get to it...

  10. He left the batter's box with intent to approach the mound and made an aggressive motion towards the pitcher. Unsportsmanlike conduct resulting in an ejection per 9.01(d).

  11. Specific language from 8.03: "If a sudden emergency causes a pitcher to be summoned into the game without any opportunity to warm up, the umpire-in-chief shall allow him as many pitches as the umpire deems necessary."

If I'm the umpire and someone is obviously arguing to stall for time I'm going to deem that maybe one or two pitches is necessary.

  12. I really hate the whole throwing at batters because the last one hit a HR off you. For the love of glayven, if the player "deserves" it (for example, he said that your mother gives BJs to everyone in the stadium for free), but this drives me nuts. Someone can get seriously hurt, among other things (even BEFORE a brawl erupts).

Stop the Leyland-hating. He is a great manager. He argues, but so what? His job is directly attached to his team's performance, and he is good at what he does. Maybe it's age, too. -)

  13. And come on, you throw at a guy with no power and a .250 batting average? He can't hit anyway (A.R., that is)...Great fielder, but no bat. Ask Ozzie!

  14. BTW, Leyland has a VALID point (I am not saying he is 100% correct), but why wasn't Alexei dismissed for going toward the mound? No, he does not HAVE to be, but to me that is what incited the benches clearing (I doubt they would have if Alexei had gone straight to first). Just IMO.

  15. BAPACop, I posted something similar above, and agree wholeheartedly. That is the ONE valid argument Leyland had with Fairchild.

  16. I think that tantrum with ... Drake (??) was more about its proximity to the game Joyce made that ruined the perfect game. I think he was annoyed that Drake (??) missed an "easy" one to begin with... I have no problem with his anger at THAT, but the way he handled it was a bit extreme...."I don't give a fuck...." And so forth.

  17. It's a shame the ejections didn't go against the Sox so we could hear Hawk educate us all on how Chad Fairchild "knows nothing about baseball, is an embarrassment to baseball, needs to be fired", et. al. When the situation works in Hawk's favor, all of a sudden we get "When there are certain actions, there are certain consequences." What a chump. Hawk Harrelson is the real embarrassment to baseball.
