MLB Ejection 147: Jerry Layne (4; Mark Parent)

2B Umpire Jerry Layne ejected Chicago White Sox Bench Coach Mark Parent for Unsportsmanlike-NEC during the pre-game conference and lineup card exchange at home plate for the Rangers-White Sox game.
Layne ejects Parent during pre-game ceremonies.
With both team's bench coaches, a pre-game guest and cameraman in attendance, Parent was ejected after discussing an inappropriate matter with crew chief U2 Layne. Replays indicate the game hadn't yet started and no calls had been made, the call was irrecusable. At the time of the ejection, the contest was tied, 0-0. The White Sox ultimately won the contest, 5-2.

This is Jerry Layne (24)'s fourth ejection of 2013.
Jerry Layne now has 10 points in the UEFL (8+2=10).
Crew Chief Jerry Layne now has 9 points in the UEFL's Crew Division (8 + 1 Irrecusable Call = 9).

This is the 147th ejection of 2013 MLB season.
This is the White Sox's 5th ejection of 2013, 3rd in the AL Central (DET 8; CLE 6; CWS 5; KC 3; MIN 2).
This is Mark Parent's 2nd ejection of 2013 and first since June 4, 2013 (Dale Scott; QOC = Correct).
This is Jerry Layne's first ejection since August 21, 2013 (Daniel Murphy; Terry Collins; QOC = Irrecusable).

Wrap: Texas Rangers vs. Chicago White Sox, 8/25/13

  1. I wish we had a feed of Hawk's rant, cause we all know there was one at some point.

  2. So anyone know how many times someone has been ejected during the pre-game meeting?

  3. It's happened a few times, don't remember the last time it happened. I believe in 1985 Earl Weaver was tossed from the 2nd game of a doubleheader during the lineup exchange after being tossed from the opener as well.

  4. I forgot who the Angels manager was back around 1989 or 1990 (Doug Rader, maybe).....but he was tossed by PU Ken Kaiser in Baltimore on a Sunday after a controversial call that ended the Saturday game and was tossed out immediately when he exchanged cards because he was still fuming over the play the night before. I don't remember the play exactly, but that's the last time I remember a pre-game ejection occurred.

  5. Last one I recall was Joe Torre in 1997, ejected by Rich Garcia in the lineup card exchange arguing a call earlier in the series. The double-header thing with Earl Weaver happend at least twice(!) in his career. The 1985 one was Jim Evans--I think the other was Ron Luciano.

  6. Prediction: We may finally have an ejection in which somebody doesn't challenge the QoC.

Second Prediction: I may have just fucked it up.

  7. How the hack do you get ejected before the game starts... I don't don't get that from this coaches

  8. One of the most surreal moments I've had umpiring involved a PGEJ.

  9. I think it was Paul Emmel who ejected M's manager Hargrove before a game a while back. I could be worng though.

  10. Bob Melvin was ejected by Joe West for a call made by Paul Emmel in a game a couple of years ago when Melvin was in Seattle.

  11. It's a Northwoods League ejection instead of an MLB ejection, but a couple of years ago, the umpires messed up the count during a Waterloo Bucks game...the manager called the umps out on it and got himself run.

By the next night, he'd seen the replay and KNEW that they'd messed up the count (plus they'd gotten an official reprimand from the league), and he confronted the umps about it the very next day during the lineup exchange, and got tossed for the second day in a row.

I have to imagine it had something to do with the ball-under-the-fence call from before, but since we have no idea what was said, and quite honestly have no idea why Mark was ejected, the call was definitely irrecusable. Can I lodge a challenge anyway, just to screw with Scott? :)

  12. Okay you can't just not tell us about it.

  13. Seems like I remember Dusty Baker, when he was with the Cubs, getting run for picking up an argument from the previous game. He got run in the previous game, then got run before the next game started.

  14. Challenge.

The QOC should have be CORRECT as Parent was arguing a CORRECT decision my HP Umpire HW in Saturday's game on a play at the plate. See Wrap.

  15. In re: 147 Layne 4;

This challenge has been summarily denied. Pursuant to UEFL Rule 6-5, "Quality of Correctness only applies to the call made directly prior to ejection." Because the game had not yet begun, no call was made prior to ejection. Therefore, QOC cannot apply.

Certiorari denied as the game hadn't even started, no call had been made.

  16. Weaver would probably be the King of Pre Game Ejections....and King of the Doubleheader Ejection as well....

  17. You gotta love the reaction of the female guest at the lineup exchange. The look on her face is hilarious.

  18. If you want a good laugh, search #umpshow on Twitter once a night and watch the fanboys come out of the woodwork. Every time an umpire says a word to a player, it's because the umpire is a big, mean bully and the poor player didn't ever do ANYTHING. ("The fans paid good money not to have to watch these umpires!")

They were all over Layne last night for this one, as usual.

  19. I vaguely remembered this and looked it up: 20 years ago Don Baylor was ejected during the lineup card exchange that grew out of a feud with umpire Charlie Williams. Baylor made public comments about an incorrect call by Williams after the previous game. During the lineup card exchange for the next game, Williams took Baylor's lineup card and wadded it up - then ejected Baylor in the ensuing argument. MLB and the Rockies had to arrange a meeting between Baylor and Williams to resolve the conflict. Here's the full story:

  20. One of MLBNetwork's top 50 ejections from a couple years ago had a PGEJ. Someone got ejected from the day before and then brought a VHS tape with them to the plate meeting to give to the umpires.

  21. I believe it was Russell Martin 3 years ago when he was a dodger after Jim Reynolds called him out at second base (I he made an incorrect call on that one).

  22. with the technology we have these days, if you've got a friend in the stands video recording it with a cellphone, you could just bring the cellphone to the plate and show them the next inning, lol,
you'll be tossed, but it'd be funny as hell,

  25. Don't want to steal Rich's thunder, but I've had both a Pre game and Post Game EJ over the last 2 seasons. Both summer rec league using FED rules.
Post game was easy....launched the bat end over end on a caught looking to end the game; made his manager duck out the way then slammed the helmet. Good bye, take the next game off.
Pre game was at plate conference and belligerently brought up a balk from the previous week. I said we were not going to discuss it, and he said "Fine, I just wanted to know if you were gonna f*** it up as bad tonight". "Coach, you won't be here to see it" and dumped him.

How long did that replay review take :)

  27. One of the starting pitchers wanted to throw with a splint on one of his pitching fingers. Casual conversation at the plate meeting (I saw the kid warming up) led to me finding out that this kid had a broken finger and that the coach planned to start him anyway. When I told the coach that the kid couldn't pitch with such a device on his pitching hand the coach, essentially, lost it. About 15 seconds later he started a sentence with the word "you" and I ran him.

The coach tried to get the TD involved and the TD told him to go pound sand.

And no, the kid didn't pitch, although the coach tried to tell the kid to take the splint off and pitch before he left the field. The assistant, glad the jerk got ejected, told the kid to put the splint back on and go sit on the bench.

  29. My favorite post-game ejection was an elimination game in a tourney. The coach laughed at the ejection was starting to ride me about how stupid it was since they were done in the tourney anyway.

I pointed out that if it was his 2nd ejection of the year in any sanctioned game then he was done for the year and would have to apply to be eligible at any level for next year.

I had never witnessed a real laugh stopped in the middle like that. Priceless...as was his attempt to apologize and have me not toss him.
