MLB Instant Replay Review 004: Clint Fagan (01)

Instant replay affirmed 1B Umpire Clint Fagan's out call in the top of the 10th inning of the Nationals-Mets game. With two out and none on, Nationals batter Danny Espinosa hit a 0-0 fastball from Mets pitcher John Lannan to third baseman David Wright, who threw to first baseman Lucas Duda as Espinosa arrived at first base. Upon instant replay review as the result of a challenge by Nationals Manager Matt Williams, Fagan's ruling that Duda tagged Espinosa while Espinosa was off his base was affirmed, the call was correct. At the time of the review, the Nationals were leading, 9-5. The Nationals ultimately won the contest, 9-7.

  1. I keep hearing different things from the announcers which is really frustrating. If a manager does not use his challenge in the 1st 6 innings does he still keep it for the rest of the game or does he lose it? Every announcers says different things which I think is pathetic. They should of been bought up to speed way before the season started. To me they are just not doing there job as good as they could by informing everyone differently.

  2. It would be the Braves announcers who don't know the difference between Alfonso Marquez and Greg Gibson. Sigh.

  3. This fake challenge stuff needs to stop fast. I'm watching Tor/TB, 3 times already (2 by Tor, 1 by TB). Manager has come out not said a word to the umpire and just watched their dugout for the challenge or no challenge signal. And then walked back to the dugout. Umpires are 3/3. MLB needs to track the delays on those not just the ones that get to a challenge. I guarantee that last year no body would have come out to chat on those plays. A safe call on a pick off to first in the 3rd inning has a 2 minute delay for Maddon to waddle over to 1st base.

  5. I love the announcer talking about how Clint took himself out of the play. Garbage. That was a read step. Washington announcers are terrible.

  6. Most announcers no nothing about umpiring mechanics or the rules.

  7. Guess great minds think alike...Sorry I missed your comment when I posted. Certainly not the first nor last time we will here Caray/Simpson, as well as some of the more egregious homers (we all know who they are), say something ridiculous and unintelligent about umpiring this year.

  11. Tim Welke used to be a great Umpire. He has worked 4 World Series and was a Playoff fixture for years. He has definitely had a rough couple of years and I fear his best days are behind him but he got his job for a reason, he was great at it. Now if you want to ask that question about his brother, that is a different case.
