MLB Instant Replay Review S-55: Dana DeMuth (S-1)

Instant replay affirmed 2B Umpire Dana DeMuth's safe call in the top of the 6th inning of the Rockies-White Sox game. With two out and two on, White Sox baserunner R1 Adam Eaton attempted to steal second base on a 2-1 pitch from Rockies pitcher Tyler Chatwood to catcher Michael McKenry who threw to shortstop Josh Rutledge as Eaton arrived at second base. Upon instant replay review as the result of a challenge by Rockies Manager Walt Weiss, DeMuth's ruling that Rutledge did not legally tag Eaton while Eaton was off his base was upheld, the call was correct.* At the time of the review, the White Sox were leading, 5-0. The contest ultimately ended in a 5-5 tie, in regulation.

This is Dana DeMuth (32)'s 1st instant replay challenge/review of Spring Training.
Dana DeMuth (32) is now 1/1 (100% Accuracy) in Instant Replay Reviews during Spring Training.
*UEFL Rule 4-7 states that the Quality of Correctness component for Instant Replay calls shall regard the ultimate decision by Replay Officials as the correct call (+1 for affirmed/upheld calls, -1 for overturned calls). Because no ejection resulted from this play, UEFL Rules do not allow for further review. Had an ejection resulted from this play following the review, it would have been eligible for Repeat Visit class under the DiMuro Rule (Rule 6-2-b-5-b).

This is the 55th instant replay reviews of 2014 Spring Training.
Rockies Manager Walt Weiss is now 1/4 (25% Success) in Instant Replay Challenges/Reviews this Spring.
Umpires are now 45/55 (82% Accuracy) in Instant Replay Reviews during 2014 MLB Spring Training.

Wrap: Chicago White Sox vs. Colorado Rockies (Cactus League Spring Training), 3/23/14

  1. I don't care if they only have one camera angle in spring training, there's no doubt that they got that one flat out wrong. What is the point of having instant replay if they STILL can't get it right? What a joke.

  2. Even from the TV camera angle that we get it's so easy to see that this should have been overturned and changed to out. Sigh. Hopefully they fix these reviews in the regular season.

  3. This is concerning. Even if they are limited in cameras for the Spring games, they at least have to have access to the same cameras as the broadcast.

Imagine if this was a regular season game and this went against the White Sox. Hawk would have been in rare form.

  4. I wonder what camera they were possibly looking at or if this was one of those situations where technical difficulties or some other reason meant that the replay guy had absolutely no feeds at his disposal. I can't believe that with any replay here this call would stand unless somehow DeMuth ruled that the fielder pushed the offensive player off the base - which itself would not be a reviewable play. Baffling why this call wasn't reversed.

  5. In my opinion, having umpires conduct the reviews was not good thinking - it should be Joe Torre and/or his staff. If I'm a newly hired MLB umpire, do I really want to overrule a decision made by a veteran umpire and face possible backlash from my brother umpires behind the scenes? I'm not sure about this, but have any of the overturned calls been from crew chiefs? Also, I'm not claiming this is the case, but it is food for thought for why some of these highly questionable calls have not been overturned during the review process. Again, just my two cents.

  6. I understand your point, but it's always been a sticking point with me that the reviews done in NHL aren't done my trained officials. As a referee myself, I would rather have another official or umpire look at it so we know that the proper rules are in place because especially the rules of baseball are really hard, and only umpires really understand them. They also speak the same language if you know what I mean. I speak differently when I'm talking to a fellow umpire than with a manager of player.

  7. I can understand your point as well. It's just a double-edged sword.

  8. Maybe put it in place so that the umpire supervisors are the ones conducting the reviews - Randy Marsh's crew so you'd have Rich Reiker, Chuck Meriwether, Ed Montague, Ed Rapuano and the like. Heck, bring in Bruce Froemming and some of the guys who retired early due to injury like Tim Tschida or maybe Bill Hohn.

  9. This is where MLB misses the mark. The NHL has a war room blog that explains each and every replay decision. MLB should absolutely set one up because fans should get an explanation for reversals and calls that get upheld like this one.

  10. I agree with bringing back the injured guys, but I doubt that in the war room, a junior guy will have final say. I expect the CC to be involved somehow.

  12. If I recall correctly, his wife passed away in February and he is probably dealing with that right now.
