MLB Replay Reviews S-12|13: T Barrett, Hoberg (S-1|1)

Instant replay affirmed 1B Umpire Ted Barrett and 3B Umpire Pat Hoberg's safe calls on consecutive plays in the top of the 9th inning of the Royals-Brewers game. With none out and none on, Royals batter Justin Maxwell hit a 0-0 pitch from Brewers pitcher Donovan Hand to shortstop Hector Gomez, deflected by third baseman Jeff Bianchi, who threw to first baseman Sean Halton as Maxwell arrived at first base. Upon instant replay review as the result of an argument by Brewers Manager Ron Roenicke and initiation by crew chief Ted Barrett, Barrett's ruling that Halton's tag did not beat Maxwell's touch of the bag was upheld, the call was correct.

Immediately thereafter, Royals batter Pedro Ciriaco hit a 0-0 pitch from Hand to third baseman Jeff Bianchi, who threw to Halton for an out. Meanwhile, baserunner R1 Maxwell attempted to advance to third base and became involved in a rundown between second and third base. As Brewers shortstop Hector Gomez attempted to field a throw and tag Maxwell, the baseball fell out of his glove and rolled directly towards third base where it was picked up Hand, covering third, who attempted to tag Maxwell as Maxwell placed his foot on third base. Upon instant replay review as the result of an argument by Roenicke and initiation by Barrett, Hoberg's ruling that Maxwell's foot stepped on third base prior to Halton applying a tag was upheld, the call was correct. At the time of the instant replay reviews, the contest was tied, 5-5. The Brewers ultimately won the contest, 7-6.

  2. And this is the problem with the 7th inning or later crew chief initiated challenge at the manager's request. Just stack the close calls together and the delay starts to add up. The first one, the simply ground ball safe at first, might be a banger but I'd have to think in the regular season with no challenges remaining for Roenicke, that the umpires would have no use for replay. It's unnecessary. The second play I can see, it's a completely wacky turn of events that's crazy and weird enough that instant replay fits right on in. Still, replay clearly shows the umps got the call right in both circumstances here.

  3. There it is, the ball vs strike ejection at the plate. Instant replay can't remove that from the game.

  4. James this is what the "learned fans", that's an oxymoron, wanted. All I can say is lay hell on it!

  5. I definitely see part of his uniform move. This ball hit him.

  6. Another Play upheld that was clearly an incorrect call that's 4 by my count.... here's the issue with this play. Does the umpire just look at replay in slo-mo or does he have audio from a full spead replay. This may be a kink that needs to be worked out.

  7. Change: "This is Adam Hamari (78)'s first ejection of 2013." to "2014"
