MLB Instant Replay Review 006: Cory Blaser (01)

Instant Replay Review overturned 2B Umpire Cory Blaser's safe call in the top of the 6th inning of the Phillies-Rangers game. With one out and two on, Rangers pitcher Martin Perez threw to second baseman Donnie Murphy as Phillies baserunner R2 Ben Revere dove back into second base. Upon instant replay review as the result of a challenge by Rangers Manager Ron Washington, Blaser's ruling that Murphy did not tag Revere before Revere's return and touch of second base was reversed, the call was incorrect. At the time of the review, the Phillies were leading, 1-0. The Rangers ultimately won the contest, 3-2.

  1. He was highly out in real time. When they slowed it down that's the only reason he could have been safe. What is the point of replay if you're just going to get it wrong by going away from real time and into super slowmo? Call the out. Or is MLB looking for another way to stick it to the Giants?

  2. This was clear and convincing for me. Should have been an overturn.

  3. Well Eric Cooper just April Fools Day-ed all over the Giants. Pollock steps on mcCain's glove and he's called safe at the plate? And of course bochy is out of challenges because he used his already and lost it because he was wrong,...

  4. Wait, what? Don't use instant replay because slow motion is too slow? Ok then... And so it begins...

  5. I'd say that I'm completely baffled by the replay decision in the NFL close to 25% of the time. MAYBE I DON'T KNOW WHAT "CONCLUSIVE" IS BUT THAT TAG WAS LAID ON HIS ELBOW WITH HIS HAND SHORT OF THE BAG.

  6. Can't tell on the pick off that he was out. The play at the plate was pretty clear.

  7. From the angles presented in that video, I don't see clear and convincing evidence of a tag. I see the glove come down to the ground near the elbow area, but I don't see conclusive proof that a tag was applied to the arm at that time. Note, the result was a "call stands," not a "call confirmed." Yes, it's very close and it does look like, if the tag was indeed applied at that time, the runner would be out. But because he was called safe initially, you need something well beyond "looking like" the tag was applied. I imagine if he was called out initially, it likewise would have resulted in a "call stands" vs. "call confirmed" because I just don't think the video clearly shows when / if the tag was applied.

Quick question about the subsequent play at the plate: Because the Giants are out of challenges, is this a situation where the crew chief, in his discretion, could initiate a review?
