MLB Instant Replay Review 014: Jerry Layne (01)

Instant Replay Review confirmed 2B Umpire Jerry Layne's safe call in the top of the 4th inning of the Rockies-Marlins game. With none out and two on, Rockies batter DJ LeMahieu hit a 1-0 fastball from Marlins pitcher Henderson Alvarez to second baseman Derek Dietrich, who threw to shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria as Rockies baserunner R1 Jordan Pacheco arrived at second. Upon Instant Replay Review as the result of a challenge by Marlins Manager Mike Redmond, Layne's ruling that Hechavarria failed to tag second base while in possession of the ball was affirmed, the call was correct. 1. I don't like how everyone is adding up all these accuracy ratings for the umpires.
I think that MLB, (they have the time and resources), needs to add up all the times managers come out to hang around and leave as a 1/1 in accuracy.

If they maintain this 50-60% accuracy it is going to make umpires look like shit.

  2. Hah Balkin Bob Davidson is already up to three challenges and leads all umpires in upheld calls. Wonder why that might be...

  3. That foul ball is such a hard play to adjudicate properly. While I didn't think it hit his bat I did think he made an attempt. I hope they use sound as well at MLB headquarters. For this play sound is useless. Who know what that ball hit, but there was definitely a double sound

  4. Replaying a hit by pitch versus foul ball vs nothing is a losing proposition. So tough to tell even with x no video

  5. Maybe if there were unlimited challenges you would have a point. Because this is only the first iteration of a challenge system, the running tally on challenges is useful, even if it doesn't represent how umpires are doing on all close plays.
