MLB Instant Replay Review 072: Gerry Davis (01)

Instant Replay Review overturned 1B Umpire Gerry Davis' out call in the top of the 1st inning of the Indians-White Sox game. With one out and one on, White Sox pitcher Felipe Paulino attempted to pick off Indians baserunner R1 Nyjer Morgan, throwing to White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu as Morgan's hand arrived at first base. Upon Instant Replay Review as the result of a challenge by Indians Manager Terry Francona, Davis' ruling that Abreu tagged Morgan prior to Morgan's return to first base was reversed, the call was incorrect. At the time of the review, the contest was tied, 0-0. The Indians ultimately won the contest, 12-6.

This is Gerry Davis (12)'s first Instant Replay Review of 2014.

  1. I'm a die-hard Yankees fan, but DAMN. Were the replay umps watching the same game?

  2. wow. So the YES announcers say he was clearly out, and the NESN announcers say he was safe. Im not sure if I've ever seen that happen before

  3. Anybody know why Kulpa and Gorman are now in New York? Davidson and Hoye are no longer there..... Also in Cincinnati last night the crew was Reyburn, Welke, Bellino, Reynolds, but today Fagan had the plate... a third example is Marvin Hudson had the plate filling in for Bucknor..... What is going on?

  4. I hate how technical everything is getting. First there's that deliciously absurd catch versus transfer rule thanks to the need to black-and-white everything because of instant replay and now there's this element that should have been called an out because he *technically* was not in contact with second base for half a second.

Go back to the flow of the game without these stupid stoppages and belly-aching second chances on video review.

  5. Big shocker that both the field ump & the replay ref missed the play here... Then again it's the yankees...

  6. This is irony in its highest degree. Joe Torre mentioned that Jeff Nelson's missed tag that led to Girardi's ejection during the ALDS a few years ago at Yankee Stadium spurred this whole instant replay movement and now a pretty similar tag play at second base is once again erroneous.

  7. Yeah, I just recently heard something to that effect. Apparently the MLB offices admitted that they missed the call after the game.

  8. Before instant replay, Ron Kulpa would have called him safe and John Farrell would have never known because there would be no one in the clubhouse video room looking at the replay and the game would have gone on as scheduled, with the runner safe at second, no incident no problem and no delay.

So glad we needed replay to get us to the exact same end result we would have had before the technology came along.

  10. So... For UEFL purposes we are considering this call to be correct? This seems wrong. Can the QOC of these reviews be challenged, or is this something that will need to be addressed after the season?

  11. Yes, points for Replay Reviews are assigned based on the outcome of the review—affirmed (confirmed or stands) or reversed (overturned)—and not a UEFL-generated Quality of Correctness component.

In other words, had this play resulted in no challenge nor Replay Review, but an ejection instead, the QOC would be incorrect. Because we did have a Replay Review, however, the +1 "correct" point is assigned as the call was affirmed.

  12. Gorman and Kulpa were in New York in the Replay Room. They volunteered to umpire to let Davidson and Hoye attend the funeral of John Hirshbeck's son.

  13. Precisely. I have been consistent on this bullshit for two years now and nothing has happened!

  14. If you can't get this play right with replay then they shouldn't even have it. What a joke. Can we please have an ejection again soon?

  16. It has to be different feeds. Once again, my standard quicktime software allowed me to use the arrow keys on my screen (not even enlarged) to see that his foot was off of the base. While I agree that it's a "cheap" challenge, his foot was off of the base and this type of call is exactly what the replay blow hards wanted. So they need to get this right.
