MLB Instant Replay Review 169: Ted Barrett (04)

Instant Replay Review upheld 1B Umpire Ted Barrett's safe call in the bottom of the 6th inning of the Pirates-Cardinals game. With one out and two on, Cardinals batter Yadier Molina hit a 1-0 sinker from Pirates pitcher Edinson Volquez on the ground to third baseman Pedro Alvarez, who threw to second baseman Neil Walker, to first baseman Ike Davis as Molina arrived at first base, R1 Matt Adams out at second. Upon Instant Replay Review as the result of a challenge by Pirates Manager Clint Hurdle, Barrett's ruling that Davis did not legally tag first base while in possession of the ball ahead of Molina's touch arrival, the call was correct. At the time of the review, the Cardinals were leading, 2-0. The Cardinals ultimately won the contest, 7-0.

  1. Challenge. The batter did not attempt to strike the pitch.

  2. Quick correction, Barrett is 2/4 on replay this season. He had one call overturned in St Louis on Friday and one overturned in Boston last Saturday.
