MLB Ejection & Replay Reviews: Layne, DiMuro (3, 10-11)

2B Umpire Jerry Layne ejected Pirates Manager Clint Hurdle for arguing a Replay Review decision that overturned HP Umpire Mike DiMuro's Rule 7.13 violation no-call (out) in the top of the 3rd and Instant Replay Review overturned DiMuro's out call in the bottom of the 5th inning of the Reds-Pirates game. In the 3rd, with one out and three on, Reds batter Alfredo Simon hit a 1-0 fastball from Pirates pitcher Stolmy Pimentel on the ground to Pimentel, who threw to catcher Russell Martin as Reds baserunner R3 Devin Mesoraco slid into home plate. Upon Replay Review as the result of a request by Reds Manager Bryan Price and initiation by Crew Chief Jerry Layne, DiMuro's ruling was reversed, the call was incorrect. Replays indicate Martin violated the provisions of Rule 7.13 by blocking Mesoraco's access to home plate while not in possession of the baseball, the call was correct. At the time of the review, the Reds were leading, 5-0.

In the 5th, with two out and one on, Pirates batter Gregory Polanco hit a 1-1 splitter from Reds pitcher Alfredo Simon on a line drive to center fielder Billy Hamilton, who threw to catcher Mesoraco as Pirates baserunner R2 Pedro Alvarez slid into home plate. Upon Replay Review as the result of a request by Pirates Acting Manager (Bench Coach) Jeff Banister and initiation by Crew Chief Jerry Layne under the auspices of a Rule 7.13 (home-plate collision) violation, DiMuro's ruling was reversed, the call was incorrect.* At the time of the review, the Reds were leading, 9-0. The Reds ultimately won the contest, 11-4.
