HP Umpire Dan Bellino ejected Brewers Manager Ron Roenicke for arguing a fan interference call in the top of the 4th inning of the Brewers-Mariners game. With one out and one on, Brewers batter Yuniesky Betancourt hit a 0-1 fastball from Mariners pitcher Joe Saunders on the ground to third baseman Kyle Seager, who committed a fielding error resulting in a fan interference call. Replays indicate that as the ball caromed down the left field fence line, a spectator wearing a Yankees jersey and Nets hat reached over the restraining wall and contacted the baseball with his hand while R1 was between second and third base, the call was correct. At the time of the ejection, the contest was tied, 2-2. The Brewers ultimately won the contest, 10-5.
This is Dan Bellino (2)'s fifth ejection of 2013.

WTH? The fan DID touch the ball yet the Brewers announcer is rambling on about how "brutal" this call is............no sir, what's brutal is your announcing. Why don't you get a pair of glasses and watch the replay again and you'll understand you sound like a douche!

ReplyDeleteTim Welke continues to befuddle.... He lets his 3 guy (granted the best thing that's happened to umpiring in a long time) get an ejection that Welke as the senior guy should have handled then Dreckman comes in to clean things up.. Did I miss something was Welke demoted? We all remember the Girardi incident last season but this is tough to watch.

ReplyDeleteThis one's got a little more than meets the eye. Can we be sure that Roenicke got tossed over whether fan interference occurred or by the placement of his runner by the umpires "in order to nullify such interference?"
ReplyDeleteI'm confused... do announcers want them to get the call right? Or only get it right when they're the closest person to the play and all others who were further away couldn't possibly see anything and shouldn't add information to the decision making process???
ReplyDeleteNo, no, I'm referring to that "Duel of the Announcers" video Gil posted earlier this year with Jon Miller and Bill Schroeder trying to explain a base award. He used the Dr. Claw theme in it. Sorry about the confusion - I actually respect your posts.
ReplyDeleteThat announcer is the definition of a Homer. I understand that the home TV audience wants someone pulling for their team, but does that mean you have to lose all sense of objectivity altogether? The announcing is what's "brutal" here, not the call.
ReplyDeleteNevermind, I got fooled by the Brewer's graphic showing the runner on 2nd, meaning I thought they sent the runner who scored back to 2nd. We're good.

ReplyDeleteHawk is an unabashed homer. And I know some of us may be reluctant to admit this, but Hawk, for the most part, is *fair* to umpires. Yes, he'll have his meltdown here and there. But you often hear Hawk saying "that's a good call" or "that's a good umpire." He called HW a "very good umpire" the other day.
2:10 it was touch by a fan.. and they still on the announcers denying that it ever touch a fan... are they blind are just stupid? These announcers really need to start getting better

ReplyDeleteI am from Wisconsin and a brewer fan and watch most of there games. Just want to inform people about Bill Schroeder. He is a horrible homer although not as bad as Hawk in my opinion. He was a back up catcher for the brewers for a few years back in the mid 80's. He usually commends umpires as long as it isn't a weird play. If it is on a bang bang play and the umps get it right weather its for the brewers or not he usually talks good of umpires. However when it comes to something with a weird play or ruling you can tell how he used to be a player and doesn't know anything about the rules. I agree with turducken his nick name is "rock" probably because he is as dumb as one. I disagree with turducken about him being worse than hawk though. He not even close to being as bad as him. Of couse Hawk says "good call" and "good umpire" if the calls go the white sox way. By the way the brewers other announcers Brian Anderson is pretty good. You might know him if your team ever plays sunday games on TBS.
ReplyDeleteI can see why RR is upset here. I kinda see both sides. There was clear touching (or "cupping", as Chandler would tell Joey in an episode of FRIENDS). But it did not impugn the play. But rules are rules. RR should be more upset at the beer-weilling swine that screwed it up for his team!
ReplyDeleteA rule is a rule but don't you think the umpires should of judged that Gomez should of scored either way? I think the umpires got this call wrong but it doesn't really matter either way. I don't even think Seattle asked the umps to talk about it. They just did on there own.

ReplyDeleteI didn't remember that. I had to look it up that it had something to do with Inspector gadget. That's what I was confused about. Thanks for clearing it up. I'm glad the brewers are good for something this year because the team is really hard to watch.

ReplyDeleteI think it did affect the play. Look how the left-fielder was going to field the ball, and look at how it ended up careening off the wall once the guy touched it. I'm not convinced he would have thrown the runner out at home, but the third base coach might have held him at third instead of sending him if the left fielder gets to the ball faster. No one is going to be happy on this whether you score him or put him back at third.
ReplyDeleteThe announcers in that clip said that the Seattle manager (Thompson maybe) questioned whether spectator interference happened. They never show him but they allude to it once.

ReplyDeleteWell it's always funny when an umpire will say "I'm the only one who can make this call" but then at the same time you'll see them pull this. I'm not saying they didn't get the call right, but the guy closest to it blew it. He didn't call the fan interference until getting help from his partners. If he couldn't see that, then it's time to get out of the league!

Naturally, there are a examples of a limited numer of umps I seem to really dislike (AH) - and also examples of several more I seem to enjoy watching (JJ, TT).
Thompson did come out (Wedge is on sick leave after a minor heart attach, I think). Watched this happen prety much live.
