MLB Ejections 122, 123: D Rackley (1, 2; Descalso, Matheny)

HP Umpire David Rackley ejected Cardinals 2B Daniel Descalso and Manager Mike Matheny for arguing a strike three call in the bottom of the 9th inning of the Cubs-Cardinals game. With one out and none on, Descalso took a 3-2 sinker from Cubs pitcher Kevin Gregg for a called third strike. Replays indicate the pitch was located thigh high and over the inner edge of home plate (px 0.756), the call was correct. At the time of the ejection, the Cubs were leading, 3-0. The Cubs ultimately won the contest, 3-0.

This is David Rackley (86)'s first and second ejections of 2013.
David Rackley now has 10 points in the UEFL (0 Previous + 2*[3 AAA + 2 Correct Call] = 10).
Crew Chief Brian Gorman now has 10 points in the UEFL's Crew Division (8 Previous + 2 Correct Call = 10).

These are the 122nd and 123rd ejections of the 2013 MLB season.
This is the 53rd player ejection of 2013. Prior to ejection, Descalso was 0-1 in the contest.
This is the 59th Manager ejection of 2013.
This is the Cardinals' 4th/5th ejection of 2013, 2nd in the NL Central (PIT 7; STL 5; CHC 4; MIL 2; CIN 0).

  1. What the hell does Rackley have in his mouth?

  2. Wow, I mean what can you really say? Rackley punches out the batter on the pitch and the batter bitches all the way to the dugout. Miraculously, he's still in the game. Only when the batter mounts the rail and yells at him some more does Rackley finally toss him. This is a perfect example of the batter throwing himself out of the game.

  3. Why isn't this a repeat visit? He argued, stopped and went back to dugout, and then got tossed

  4. Probably because there was no intervening play i.e. pitch.

  5. Brilliantly handled by Rackley who just by handling this as well as he does deserves an extended look..... Awesome!!

  6. Could be a frontrunner for ejection of the year. Excellent management here by Rackley and rational announcers.

  7. Definitely one of the best handled ejections I've seen on this blog yet. Incredibly long leash for both, no anger, no confrontation. This should be shown to umpires as an educational video.

  8. I got to say other than an assumption those announcers were right on the money good job.

  9. Best handling of an ejection I have ever seen. Player and manager definitely deserved to be run and Rackley didn't try to be the show.

Hopefully we see more of him!

  10. Yeah, this is a no-brainer. I still don't understand arguing balls and strikes. Interpretation differs from person to person. Jees, I'd hate to talk politics with some of these guys. ...

  11. Credit to the announcers. They should give lessons also.

  12. Does not top Jerry Layne's silent treatment

  13. Gotta swing the bat, bud. That's as good a corner fastball as I've seen all year. If I'm wearing the mask, no way Descalso's making it all the way back to the dugout with as much chirping as he was doing.

  14. I have MLB.tv on my Roku, and it now has an audio option of 'ballpark sound' - meaning no announcers! If the broadcast has good enough audio, you can a hear lot of the stuff around HP. Such as the batter here screaming the usual 'that was terrible', 'that was no strike', blah blah blah. Then after they cut to the dugout cam, you can see him mouthing letters like 'f' and 's', cut back to the HP cam, and you can hear Rackley very clearly, "That's enough! You're outta here!!" And when Matheny comes out, you can hear HIM go, "That wasn't a strike all f***ing night!" THAT should have been enough right there!

sigh....if that had only been around in the days of Earl and Billy and Lasorda in his prime...
