in the bottom of the 8th inning of the Reds-Pirates game. With none out and none on, Pirates batter Andrew McCutchen took a 2-2 fastball from Reds pitcher Sam LeCure for a hit by pitch. Replays indicate the pitch struck McCutchen's upper left arm, the call was irrecusable. At the time of the ejection, the Pirates were leading, 5-2. The Reds ultimately won the contest, 6-5, in 10 innings.

  1. The playoffs are coming every manager will have tense moments with umpires. Looks like a fun race AL wildcard. NL wild card. I love seeing chapman throw 100 mph +, not even a reds fan. Gotta love baseball. Great sport. If I were to predict I would say cards and pirates are in and this is a wild guess, but Indians and orioles are in? Sorry Yankees, royals, rangers, rays. Just guessing though. Should be fun

  2. I like Hurdle some of the time and I hate him others. He gets ejected arguing the stupidest things and the Pirates can't afford to have that at this point in the season.

  3. The Cardinals, Pirates, and Reds are all going to make it to the playoffs. The NL Central is too strong overall for them to not get both Wild Card teams at this point. If the Pirates don't clinch the division they're probably not going to make it past the WC round though, their offense is just too unpredictable and if their chances are riding on a single game they're done for.

  4. Just curious, has Dusty Baker been ejected yet this season?

  5. The Cincinnati Reds are the only MLB team without an ejection to date this season.

  6. Hey what ever happened to Clint Fagan? Last time I saw him he was almost Perfect as far as calling balls and strikes. Is he back at the triple A league? He should get another call up to the bigs, no?

  7. Wow! Is that vary rare Gil? First time i mean for that to happend ever? Correct me if I'm wrong but was it the Seattle Mariners in 2011 with no ejections?

  8. He gets himself run and then his team ends up losing the game. Smart move.

  9. Would of been awesome to see Hurdle and Baker get tossed simultaneously!

  10. I'm having trouble deciding which would be better, two managers getting tossed at once, or that time Hurdle got tossed twice at once.

  12. I would include Davis in that list.

  13. Why do managers get so butt hurt over warnings?

  14. I think Jeff Kellogg and Fieldin Culbreth have 2 of the best zones in the bigs. As far as younger guys go, Tony Randazzo always seems to have a very good zone.

  15. Don't get the warning being issued there. I understand the history of players being hit in the Red/PIrates series this year, as the announcers brought up. But you have to consider the situation. The Reds are down 5-2 in the 8th inning, fighting for a playoff spot, and they're gonna purposely put a man on base? No way. I think Carlson overreacted.

  16. I also like Mike Everitt and Brian Gorman behind the plate

  17. Almost like this classic from 2011...wait for it at about the 1:35 mark. Clint delivers!

  18. Carlson didn't overreact, he issued warnings exactly where they were intended to be warned. If you think its intentional you should eject immediately; if you don't think it's intentional but you think the other team will look to retaliate, you issue warnings. The Pirates have a history of freaking out when McCutchen is hit by Reds pitchers in clearly unintentional situations so this is a great place to issue warnings.

  19. "The NL Central is too strong overall for them to not get both Wild Card teams at this point" What would have been the odds of THAT statement being made at the start of the season??

  20. Gonzalez' performance or effort doesn't affect the umpires in the same way the umpires' performance or effort affects the players. If anyone should know that, Jim Joyce should. The umpires don't get to win or lose a game, but they most definitely affect who does.

  21. Good points, Old School Blue. The umpires handled the ejection perfectly, as far as I am concerned. It was a case of a player just running his mouth and not even necessarily about the call itself because even though Jim Joyce missed the call, Adrian Gonzalez couldn't have seen it any better than Joyce, so to continue the rant he questions Joyce's hustle. He basically ejected himself, and Andy Fletcher's signal indicates as much. Joe West seemed to realize that Drake and Fletcher could easily handle the situation, which they did.

  22. I, too, am sure you are in the minority on this one.

  23. He missed the call AKA failed at his job but damn if there wasn't some good ole fashioned umpiring teamwork... Jolly good show!
