In the top of the 4th, with none out and none on, Cubs batter Anthony Rizzo took a first-pitch sinker from Reds pitcher Tejay Antone for a called ball, resulting in warnings issued to both teams following crew consultation. Replays indicate the pitch was located off the inner edge of home plate and above Rizzo's head, the call was irrecusable. At the time of the Cubs' ejections, the Reds were leading, 4-1.

In the bottom of the 4th, with none out and one on (R1), Reds batter Shogo Akiyama took a 2-1 fastball from Cubs pitcher Adbert Alzolay for a called third ball, resulting in crew consultation and a benches-clearing incident. Replays indicate the pitch was located over the heart of home plate and above the height of Akiyama's head, the call was irrecusable. At the time of the Reds' ejections, the Reds were leading, 4-3.
