MLB Ejection 051: Hunter Wendelstedt (2; Jason Hammel)

HP Umpire Hunter Wendelstedt ejected Orioles pitcher Jason Hammel for throwing at Tigers batter Matt Tuiasosopo in the top of the 4th inning of the Tigers-Orioles game. With none out and none on, Tigers batter Victor Martinez hit a home run off Hammel, followed consecutively with home runs by Jhonny Peralta and Alex Avila resulting in back-to-back-to-back home runs. Replays indicate the fourth batter of the inning,
Wieters and Hammel argue Hunter's ejection.
Tuiasosopo, was hit with a first-pitch inside slider, the call was irrecusable. At the time of the ejection, the Tigers were leading, 4-1. The Tigers ultimately won the contest, 10-3.

This is Hunter Wendelstedt (21)'s first ejection of 2013.
Hunter Wendelstedt now has 6 points in the UEFL (4 + 2 + 0 = 6).
Crew Chief Jerry Layne now has 2 points in the UEFL's Crew Division (1 Previous + 1 Irrecusable Call = 2).

This is the 51st ejection of 2013.
This is the 24th player ejection of 2013. Prior to his ejection, Hammel's line read 3.0 IP, 5 ER, 3 HR.
This the Orioles' 1st ejection of 2013, T-3rd in the AL East (TOR 5; TB 4; BAL, NYY 1; BOS 0).
This is Jason Hammel's first career ejection.
This is Hunter Wendelstedt's first ejection since May 16 (Eric Wedge; QOC = Y).

Wrap: Detroit Tigers vs. Baltimore Orioles, 6/1/13
Video: After 3 straight HRs, Hammel hits MT and is immediately tossed, leading to Showalter's argument (BAL)

My initial thought was it wasn't intentional, but you really don't have a choice as an umpire. Three straight home runs followed by a hit batter on the next pitch will almost always equal an ejection.

This is an easy ejection for Hunter. After 3 homers a pitch at a guy's head? Gotta toss him.

Don't think that it's intentional, but NOTE TO EVERYONE: This play cannot be reviewed/and or challenged. So, don't waste your time.

Back to back to back homers and the very next pitch is thrown at someone's head?! AUTOMATIC EJECTION!

Good grief- Today's Ejections

Hunter Wendelstedt- Jason Hammel

Todd Tichenor- Lance Berkman

Brian Knight- Don Mattingly

Larry Vanover- Freddi Gonzalez

Joe West- Dale Sveum

Well -- I love the West ejection. AAA Umpire Toby Basner blew two calls in consecutive innings and Cowboy Joe takes care of business. That's a crew chief.

Pitchers (and managers) are getting smarter..... We have seen quite a few sliders thrown at batters over the past couple of seasons that were 100% intentional.... This gives the pitcher an out... "it was a slider"... Well officiated by Hunter in what is a very tough spot

I understand why Wendelstedt tossed him given the circumstances. Was it intentional? I don't know. You could look at it either way. Most guys aren't gonna drill someone with a slider. But then again most guys don't give up 3 HR's in a row, either.

On a side note, I guess MLB doesn't have any weight/health requirements for their umpires like the NFL does for its refs? With all due respect to Jerry Layne, he looks very unhealthy.

I don't quite understand how anyone can vote this is an "incorrect call". A guy gives up 3 home runs consecutively and the next guy on the first pitch gets plunked in the head. I don't know if it's intentional or not, no one but the pitcher does, but as the umpire, that's a call you have to make.

This one can be argued either way, but unfortunately for Hammel the decision is HWs, not his!

Just because the pitch was a slider doesn't mean it wasn't on purpose .
