HP Umpire Ryan Blakney ejected Red Sox manager Alex Cora (balk no-call on Hunter Brown; QOCY) in the top of the 7th inning of the #RedSox-#Astros game. With two out and one on, Red Sox batter Romy Gonzalez took two pitches from Astros pitcher Brown, ruled ball one and strike one. Boston contended that Brown balked because he failed to declare his switch from Windup Position during the first pitch of the at-bat to Set Position for the second pitch of the at-bat. By rule, a pitcher needn't declare use of Set Position with a runner on the base—it is not a balk—the call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the Astros were leading, 2-1. The Astros ultimately won the contest, 4-1.

This is Ryan Blakney (36)'s 2nd ejection of 2025.
*Official Baseball Rule 5.07(a): "There are two legal pitching positions, the Windup Position and the Set Position, and either position may be used at any time."

With none out and one on, Red Sox batter Abraham Toro hit a 2-2 fastball from Angels pitcher Jack Kochanowicz on the ground to shortstop Zach Neto, who threw to third baseman Luis Rengifo as a rundown transpired during which second baseman Christian Moore tagged out Red Sox baserunner R2 Jarren Duran before throwing to third baseman Rengifo, covering second base, who tagged out Red Sox batter-runner Toro. Replays indicate that prior to receiving the throw, fielder Rengifo blocked Toro's path to second base and in doing so impeded his progress as Toro began his slide into the base, and that the throw did not take Rengifo into the runner's path so the act-of-fielding exception does not apply, the call was incorrect.* At the time of the ejection, the Angels were leading, 5-4. The Angels ultimately won the contest, 9-5.

Replays do not conclusively indicate whether Adames tagged Duran while Duran was not in contact with the base, having overslid, during his attempted return, the call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the Giants were leading, 8-5. Upon crew consultation, the call was changed to obstruction (Type 1) against infielder Grissom, with baserunner R2 Buxton award third base. 3B Umpire Doug Eddings ejected Red Sox pitcher Kutter Crawford and Phillies P Matt Strahm (national anthem standoff delaying start of game) in the top of the 1st inning of the #RedSox-#Phillies game. Prior to the contest, following the traditional performing of the national anthem during pre-game festivities, Crawford and Strahm remained on the field of play in their positions as if the anthem were still occurring, despite it having ended. Because the players refused to leave the field of play so that the game could begin, they were ejected for improperly delaying the game. Replays indicate both players remained on the field even as Phillies starting pitcher Bailey Falter's warmup throws had concluded and the pre-game timing pitch clock had counted down to the scheduled first pitch. At the time of the ejections, the game was tied, 0-0. The Red Sox ultimately won the contest, 7-4.
