MLB Ejection 084 - Doug Eddings (3; Joe Espada)

1B Umpire Doug Eddings ejected Astros manager Joe Espada (Replay Review decision that upheld 2B Umpire Emil Jimenez out call on Yordan Alvarez; QOCY) in the bottom of the 10th inning of the #BlueJays-#Astros game. With none out and one on, Astros batter Alvarez hit a 0-1 changeup from Blue Jays pitcher Chase Lee on a line drive to RF Nathan Lukes, who threw to SS Andrés Giménez as batter-runner Alvarez arrived at second base, ruled out on the tag by 2B Umpire Jimenez and affirmed via Replay Review as the result of a manager's challenge by Astros manager Espada. Replays indicate the fielder's glove appeared to touch Alvarez prior to the runner's foot touching second base, the call was correct. At the time of the ejection, the Blue Jays were leading, 5-4. The Blue Jays ultimately won the contest, 5-4, in 10 innings.

With none out and none on, Pirates batter Jacob Gonzalez took a 3-1 cutter from Brewers pitcher Logan Henderson for a called second strike, and may or may not have attempted to challenge the call via ABS. Replays indicate the pitch was located over the heart of home plate and below the midpoint (px -0.24, pz 3.40 [sz_top 3.29 / RAD 3.41]), the call was correct. At the time of the ejection, the Brewers were leading, 3-2. The Brewers ultimately won the contest, 4-2.

HP Umpire Manny Gonzalez ejected Nationals manager Blake Butera (obstruction no-call; QOCY) in the top of the 7th inning of the #Nationals-#Phillies game. With none out and one on, Nationals batter Brady House hit a 2-2 changeup from Phillies pitcher Kyle Backhus on the ground to catcher Garrett Stubbs, who threw to 3B Alec Bohm to retire Nationals baserunner R3 Nasim Nuñez as a collision occurred between runner and catcher. Replays indicate runner Nuñez initiated contact with the catcher by intentionally kicking at his legs and that the catcher accordingly did not obstruct the runner, the call was correct. At the time of the ejection, the Nationals were leading, 3-0. The Phillies ultimately won the contest, 6-3.

Replays indicate the pitch was located over the inner half of home plate and at the hollow beneath the knee (px 0.21, pz 1.46 [sz_bot 1.58 / RAD 1.46]), the call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the game was tied, 3-3. The Astros ultimately won the contest, 7-3.

HP Umpire Chad Fairchild ejected Athletics hitting coach Chris Cron (balk call on Luis Morales; QOCY) in the bottom of the 2nd inning of the #Athletics-#Twins game. With two out and the bases loaded, A's pitcher Morales was called for a balk during Ryan Jeffers' at-bat. Replays indicate that on his first pitch to Jeffers, Morales took a step back, as if pitching from Windup, while his footwork parallel to the rubber indicated Set Position, without declaring his intent to pitch from Windup Position, the call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the Twins were leading, 4-0. The Twins ultimately won the contest, 11-8.

Replays indicate Mahle took a second step toward home plate while appearing to pitch from Set Position without declaring his intent to use Hybrid and pitch from Windup Position, the call was correct. At the time of the ejection, the Rockies were leading, 1-0. the Giants ultimately won the contest, 4-2.

Crew Chief Eddings then denied Boone's request to file a manager's challenge, ruling that Boone exceeded the allotted time limit to initiate a challenge. Replays indicate Boone signaled for the challenge by placing his hands on his ears approximately 17 seconds after the conclusion of 2B Umpire Jimenez's out call, the denial call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the Rays were leading, 2-0. With one out and two on, Reds batter Sal Stewart hit a 3-2 sinker from Phillies pitcher Orion Kerkering on the ground to 3B Alec Bohm, who threw to 2B Bryson Stott, to 1B Bryce Harper, as Reds baserunner R1 Elly De La Cruz arrived at second base, ruled safe by 2B Umpire Estabrook and confirmed via Replay Review as the result of a manager's challenge by Phillies manager Don Mattingly. Replays indicate De La Cruz beat the throw to second base, overran second base, was not tagged, and returned to second base immediately after overrunning it, the call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the Phillies were leading, 4-1. Replays indicate batter Bolte's bat made contact with Angels catcher O'Hoppe's mitt during the check swing, the call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the A's were leading, 7-3. The A's ultimately won the contest, 9-3.
