Ortiz handed a replacement ball to Realmuto as Miller warned Nola that he could not repeatedly ask for new baseballs, resulting in an argument from Thomson, but no automatic ball added to the count for a pitch timer violation because Thomson's argument preceded the expiration of time.

Between pitches, a 15-second timer is in place with the bases empty. The two disengagements-per-plate-appearance rule only applies with runner(s) on base, so pitcher Nola was not entitled to a step-off to reset the clock. Furthermore, MLB has stated that o. Any attempt to circumvent the pitch timer rules and/or delay the game will result in a warning and/or violation being called. Pitchers may ask for a new ball, but must do so with at least eight seconds remaining on the clock. Repeated asks will result in a warning. It is against the new pitch clock rules to request new baseballs in an attempt to circumvent the pitch clock timer through excessive "resets" of the clock.

3B Umpire Adrian Johnson ejected Pirates manager Derek Shelton (pitch clock timer operation by HP Umpire Quinn Wolcott; QOCU) in the top of the 4th inning of the #Pirates-#Rays game. With two out and none on, Pirates batter Ji Hwan Bae singled on a 1-0 fastball from Rays pitcher Shane McClanahan. Following this play, Shelton alleged to Wolcott that the 30-second between batters pitch clock did not start properly, resulting in an argument that Shelton eventually directed to 3B Umpire and Crew Chief Johnson when Wolcott proceeded with the game and prepared for McClanahan's first pitch to ensuing batter Austin Hedges. Shelton was ejected as McClanahan delivered to Hedges, the call was irrecusable. At the time of the ejection, the Rays were leading, 3-1. The Rays ultimately won the contest, 8-1.

With one on (R1) and two out, Reds batter Stuart Fairchild took three pitches from Rays pitcher Pete Fairbanks for balls one, two, and three. Replays indicate the first pitch, a fastball, was located head-high and behind the batter, while the third pitch, a fastball, was located head-high and inside. Reds manager Bell wanted Fairbanks ejected for a lack of pitcher control and was ejected after exiting the dugout and being warned to stop, the call was irrecusable.* At the time of the ejection, the Rays were leading, 8-0. The Rays ultimately won the contest, 8-0.

With none out and none on, Anderson took a 1-2 changeup from Giants pitcher Logan Webb for a called third strike. Replays indicate that during delivery of the pitch, Anderson walked out of the batter's box and that prior to the pitch, Webb appeared to come set prior to Anderson being ready and alert to the pitcher in the batter's box; this was an uncalled violation.* Anderson's ejection occurred after ensuing batter Luis Robert's strikeout, the call was irrecusable. At the time of the ejection, the Giants were leading, 2-0. The White Sox ultimately won the contest, 7-3.

*t has been pointed out that this was Webb's windup position and after review I agree; however, replays indicate he begins his delivery motion prior to Anderson being ready in the box (Anderson was still in his preparatory motions). This takes this play from "Max Scherzer Rule" territory to potential quick pitch territory. Both actions are illegal and, in this case, both would result in the same penalty: a ball added to the count.

tldr: It was Windup Position, not Set, but the pitcher still violated the rule by starting his delivery before the batter was ready.
