With none out and two on (R1, R3), Guardians batter Josh Naylor hit a ground ball to Twins third baseman Jose Miranda, who committed an error, prompting Guardians baserunner R1 Jose Ramirez to try for third base. MLB Ejection 013 - James Hoye (1; Rocco Baldelli)

1B Umpire James Hoye ejected Twins manager Rocco Baldelli (illegal substance check/non-ejection of Yankees pitcher Domingo Germán) in the top of the 4th inning of the #Twins-#Yankees game. Prior to the top of the 4th inning, umpires were seen meeting with several members of the Yankees, notably Germán and manager Aaron Boone, following an illegal substance inspection of Germán's hand conducted by Hoye in the middle of the third inning. After the conclusion of this discussion between umpires and New York, Baldelli argued that Germán should have been ejected pursuant to the illegal substance rule, and was himself ejected for his extended argument. Following the game, it was revelaed that Germán had excess rosin on his hands (e.g., OBR 4.01(f) requires a rosin bag be placed on the mound). Rosin is not an illegal substance, so OBR 6.02(c)(7) does not apply, but instead Hoye's "wash your hands" instruction to Germán was akin to a don't-do-that rule, as in don't have excess rosin on your hands, the remedy for which is NOT ejection or removal but simple remediation of performing the required act, the call was irrecusable. At the time of the ejection, the Yankees were leading, 3-0. The Yankees ultimately won the contest, 6-1.

This is James Hoye (92)'s 1st ejection of 2023.
*Official Baseball Rule 6.02(c)(7) states: "The pitcher shall not have on their person, or in their possession, any foreign substance...The pitcher may not attach anything to either hand, any finger or either wrist (e.g., Band-Aid, tape, Super Glue, bracelet, etc.). The umpire shall determine if such attachment is indeed a foreign substance for the purpose of Rule 6.02(c)(7), but in no case may the pitcher be allowed to pitch with such attachment to their hand, finger or wrist."
OBR 4.01(f): "Before the game begins the umpire shall ensure that an official rosin bag is placed on the ground behind the pitcher's plate prior to the start of each game."

MLB Ejection 140 - Todd Tichenor (3; Rocco Baldelli)

1B Umpire Todd Tichenor ejected Twins manager Rocco Baldelli (mound visit limitation rule/second visit/visit charged during benches-clearing incident) in the bottom of the 5th inning of the #Twins-#Astros game. With none out and none on, Astros batter Jose Altuve took a 1-1 sinker from Twins pitcher Aaron Sanchez for a hit-by-pitch, resulting in a benches-clearing incident. During the incident, as Astros manager Dusty Baker spoke with Altuve, Twins manager Rocco Baldelli spoke with Sanchez. Pursuant to Official Baseball Rule 5.10(m) [Limitation on the Number of Mound Visits Per Game, a Pace of Play Modification], "a manager or coach trip to the mound to meet with the pitcher shall constitute a visit" (the only exception is potential injury), so Baldelli was charged with a visit. When pitching coach Pete Maki subsequently visited the mound after Sanchez walked ensuing batter Yuli Gurriel on four pitches, umpires enforced the two-visits-per-pitcher-per-inning rule (5.10(l)) and ordered Sanchez's removal from the game, resulting in Baldelli's ejection, the call was correct...technically. At the time of the ejection, the Astros were leading, 2-0. The Astros ultimately won the contest, 4-2.

With none out and one on (R2), Guardians batter Andres Gimenez hit a 2-2 changeup from Twins pitcher Jharel Cotton on a fly ball off the right field wall, fielded by Max Kepler, resulting in an obstruction call (type 2) on Twins first baseman Jose Miranda by 1B Umpire Bacchus, who ruled that Miranda illegally impeded Gimenez's progress in running the bases, awarding Gimenez second base as a result of the obstruction. Replays indicate Gimenez and Miranda collided between first and second base and that Miranda was not legally positioned relative to impeding the baserunner; the batter-runner was awarded second base to nullify the act of obstruction (type 2), the call was correct. At the time of the ejection, the Guardians were leading, 2-1. The Guardians ultimately won the contest, 3-2, in 10 innings.
