MLB Ejection 154: Greg Gibson (6; John Gibbons)

HP Umpire Greg Gibson ejected Blue Jays Manager John Gibbons for arguing a strike two (check swing) call in the top of the 3rd inning of the Blue Jays-Yankees game. With two out and none on, Blue Jays batter Josh Donaldson attempted to check his swing on a 1-1 curveball from Yankees pitcher Ivan Nova. This play has been referred to the UEFL Appeals Board for further review (Check Swing). At the time of the ejection, the game was tied, 0-0. The Blue Jays ultimately won the contest, 6-0.

HP Umpire Mike Estabrook ejected Phillies Pitching Coach Bob McClure for arguing ball calls in the top of the 5th inning of the Padres-Phillies game. With two out and none on, Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola issued back-to-back walks to Padres batters Matt Kemp and Justin Upton. Replays indicate that of the eight called balls to Kemp and Upton, all were officiated properly, the call was correct. At the time of the ejection, the Padres were leading, 3-1. The Phillies ultimately won the contest, 4-3, in 12 innings.

With one out and one on, Marlins batter Adeiny Hechavarria attempted to check his swing on a 0-2 slider from Braves pitcher Arodys Vizcaino for a swinging third strike. Replays indicate the pitch was located within the bounds of the strike zone (px -.163, pz 1.545 [sz_bot 1.43]), the call was correct pursuant to UEFL 6-2-b-6-a (Quality of Correctness is governed by the (in)correctness of the call made, not by the quality of reasoning given for such a call). At the time of the ejection, the Braves were leading, 6-3. The Braves ultimately won the contest, 6-3.

Brian Gorman Officiates 3,000th Career MLB Game

Umpire Brian Gorman worked his 3,000th career MLB game Tuesday night in Washington, DC, where the Nationals hosted the Arizona Diamondbacks. Crew Chief Gorman served as 3B Umpire alongside HP Umpire Mark Carlson, 1B Umpire Gabe Morales and 2B Umpire Tripp Gibson as the Nats defeated the D-Backs 5-4.

Gorman, who worked his first National League game in 1991 before joining the full-time staff three years later, joins his father Tom Gorman in officiating over 3,000 games. In all, Tom called 3,804 NL games during his career, which spanned from 1951 through 1977. Brian has officiated 84 playoff games, including one Wild Card Game, 10 Division Series, five League Championship Series, and three World Series. He has also worked two All-Star Games.

Gorman most recently ejected Orioles Manager Buck Showalter on June 4, 2015, his 48th career ejection.

MLB Ejection 151: Hunter Wendelstedt (3; Joe Maddon)

3B Umpire Hunter Wendelstedt ejected Cubs Manager Joe Maddon for arguing a Replay Review decision that affirmed 1B Umpire David Rackley's safe call in the bottom of the 3rd inning of the Cubs-Brewers game. With two out and one on, Brewers batter Adam Lind hit a 1-2 fastball from Cubs pitcher Clayton Richard on the ground to shortstop Starlin Castro, who threw to first baseman Anthony Rizzo as Lind arrived at first base, ruled safe by Rackley. Upon Replay Review as the result of a challenge by Cubs Manager Maddon, Rackley's ruling was confirmed (pulled foot), the call was irrecusable. At the time of the ejection, the Cubs were leading, 2-1. The Cubs ultimately won the contest, 4-3.

1B Umpire Joe West ejected Pirates 1B Sean Rodriguez, Reds 1B Joey Votto and Reds CF Marlon Byrd for fighting in the bottom of the 8th and HP Umpire DJ Reyburn ejected Pirates pitcher Mark Melancon for throwing at Reds batter Tucker Barnhart and Manager Clint Hurdle for arguing Melancon's ejection in the bottom of the 9th inning of the Pirates-Reds game. In the 8th, with one out and none on, Reds batter Phillips took a 0-0 fastball from Pirates pitcher Tony Watson for a hit-by-pitch, resulting in a bench clearing brawl during which Rodriguez, Votto and Byrd were ejected for fighting, the call was irrecusable. In the 9th, with one out and one on, Barnhart took a 0-1 cutter from Melancon for a hit-by-pitch. Replays indicate the pitch was located inside and hit Barnhart in the upper torso; warnings had not previously been issued, the call was irrecusable. At the time of all ejections, the Pirates were leading, 3-0. The Pirates ultimately won the contest, 3-0.
