MLB Ejection 097 - Carlos Torres (Walt Weiss)

HP Umpire Carlos Torres ejected Braves manager Walt Weiss (strike three swinging call to Mauricio Dubón) in the top of the 8th inning of the #Braves-#Twins game. With one out and one on, Dubón attempted to check his swing on a 3-2 slider from Twins pitcher Jeff Hoffman, ruled a swinging strike by HP Umpire Torres. At the time of the ejection, the Twins were leading, 6-4. The Twins ultimately won the contest, 6-4.

MLB Ejections 090-1 - Dan Merzel (x2; Weiss & Chris Sale)

Umpire Dan Merzel ejected Braves manager Walt Weiss and pitcher Chris Sale (balk call; QOCY) in the bottom of the 5th inning of the #Braves-#Yankees game. With one out and one on, and Austin Wells at bat, HP Umpire Merzel called Sale for a balk for stepping, as in Windup Position, while standing in Set Position, without notifying the umpire his intent to pitch from the Windup Position while in Hybrid stance.* Replays indicate Sale lifted his free foot and returned it to the ground, which, with runner(s), is a start-stop balk, the call was correct. At the time of the ejection, the Yankees were leading, 3-2. The Yankees ultimately won the contest, 5-4.

The next day, 3B Umpire Merzel ejected Sale prior to the plate meeting as the umpires entered the playing field for continuing to argue the balk from the night before. The call is similarly correct. At the time of the ejection, the game had not started yet.

Replays indicate the pitch was located over the heart of home plate and above the midpoint (px -.223, pz 3.785 [sz_top 3.420 / MOE 3.503]), the call was incorrect. At the time of the ejection, the Dodgers were leading, 7-4. The Dodgers ultimately won the contest, 7-4.

With none out and none on, Franco took a first-pitch fastball from Anderson for a hit-by-pitch, having hit a three-run home run in his preceding at-bat. Replays indicate the pitch was located inside and struck Franco on his knee, the call was irrecusable. At the time of the ejection, the Phillies were leading, 3-0. The Phillies ultimately won the contest, 6-3.

In the 4th, with two out and none on, Rockies batter Nick Hundley took a 1-2 changeup from Pirates pitcher Jeff Locke for a called third strike. Replays indicate the pitch was located off the inner edge of home plate and thigh high (px 1.179, pz 1.979), the call was incorrect. In the 6th, with one out and none on, Raburn took a 1-2 fastball from Locke for a called third strike. Replays indicate the pitch was located over the outer edge of home plate and at the hollow of the knee (px -.817, pz 1.450 [sz_bot 1.53 / MOE 1.447 - visual evidence confirms the pitch was inside but its height relative to the bottom of the strike zone is deemed borderline]), the call was incorrect. At the time of Weiss' ejection, the game was tied, 0-0. At the time of Raburn's ejection, the Pirates were leading, 1-0. The Pirates ultimately won the contest, 6-1.

MLB Ejection 096: Jerry Layne (1; Walt Weiss)

2B Umpire Jerry Layne ejected Rockies Manager Walt Weiss for arguing a Replay Review that overturned Layne's safe call to an out in the bottom of the 3rd inning of the Astros-Rockies game. With two out and one on, Rockies baserunner R1 Charlie Blackmon attempted to steal second base on a 0-0 fastball from Astros pitcher Brett Oberholtzer to Rockies batter DJ LeMahiu as Astros catcher Jason Castro threw to shortstop Carlos Correa. Upon instant replay review as the result of a challenge by Astros Manager AJ Hinch, Layne's ruling was reversed, the call was irrecusable.* At the time of the ejection, the Astros were leading, 3-0. The Astros ultimately won the contest, 8-4.

With one out and none on, Rockies batter Jordan Lyles took a 0-2 fastball from Diamondbacks pitcher Robbie Ray for a called third strike. Replays indicate the pitch was located over the inner half of home plate and below the midpoint (px -0.373, pz 3.409 [sz_top 3.420]), the call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the game was tied, 0-0. The Diamondbacks ultimately won the contest, 5-1.

In the 8th, with none out and none on, Rockies batter Corey Dickerson took a 1-2 fastball from Braves pitcher David Carpenter for a hit-by-pitch.
