MLB Replay Reviews 360-362: Hickox, Kulpa, Gosney

Instant Replay Review overturned 3B Umpire Ed Hickox's safe call in the top of the 1st, 2B Umpire Ron Kulpa's safe call in the top of the 5th and 1B Umpire Jeff Gosney's safe call in the bottom of the 6th inning of the Rangers-Tigers game. In the 1st, with one out and one on, Rangers batter Mitch Moreland struck out swinging on a 3-2 changeup from Tigers pitcher Rick Porcello as Rangers baserunner R2 Shin-Soo Choo attempted to steal third base off Tigers catcher Alex Avila, who threw to third baseman Nick Castellanos as Choo slid into the bag. Upon Replay Review as the result of a challenge by Tigers Manager Brad Ausmus, Hickox's ruling was reversed, the call was incorrect. At the time of the review, the contest was tied, 0-0.

In the 5th, with none out and one on, Rangers baserunner R1 Elvis Andrus attempted to steal second base off Tigers catcher Avila, who threw to shortstop Andrew Romine as Andrus slid into the bag. Upon Replay Review as the result of a challenge by Tigers Manager Ausmus, Kulpa's ruling was reversed, the call was incorrect. At the time of the review, the Rangers were leading, 4-1.

In the 6th, with one out and three on, Tigers batter Castellanos hit a 1-0 fastball from Rangers pitcher Nick Martinez on a line drive to second baseman Rougned Odor, who threw to first baseman Moreland as Tigers baserunner R1 Avila attempted to return to first base. Upon Replay Review as the result of a challenge by Rangers Manager Ron Washington, Gosney's ruling was reversed, the call was incorrect. At the time of the review, the Rangers were leading, 8-1. The Rangers ultimately won the contest, 12-2.

MLB Replay Reviews 330-331: Gosney, Eddings (01, 08)

Instant Replay Review overturned 2B Umpire Jeff Gosney's safe call in the top of the 2nd and confirmed HP Umpire Doug Eddings' Rule 7.13 violation no-call (out) in the top of the 5th inning of the Diamondbacks-Cardinals game. In the 2nd, with one out and one on, Diamondbacks baserunner R1 Miguel Montero attempted to steal second base off Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina, who threw to second baseman Kolten Wong as Montero slid into second base. Upon Replay Review as the result of a challenge by Cardinals Manager Mike Matheny, Gosney's ruling was reversed, the call was incorrect. At the time of the review, the contest was tied, 0-0.

In the 5th, with one out and two on, Diamondbacks batter Brandon McCarthy bunted a 0-1 fastball from Cardinals pitcher Michael Wacha back to Wacha, who threw to catcher Molina as Diamondbacks baserunner R3 Cody Ross arrived at home plate. Upon Replay Review as the result of a request by Diamondbacks Manager Kirk Gibson and initiation by Crew Chief Doug Eddings, Eddings' ruling was affirmed, the call was correct. At the time of the review, the Cardinals were leading, 1-0. The Cardinals ultimately won the contest, 3-2, in 12 innings.

Major League Umpiring Debut: Jeff Gosney (40)

Umpire Jeff Gosney made his MLB debut during Blue Jays-Orioles Game 2 Saturday evening in Baltimore. Gosney joined acting chief Paul Emmel's crew, serving as Saturday's third base umpiring alongside 2B Umpire Jordan Baker, 1B Umpire Chris Conroy and home plate umpire Emmel.

Gosney is on the International League umpire roster for the 2014 season, which is his fourth season in the IL and AAA. Gosney began his career with Minor League Baseball in the Gulf Coast League, with service in the Appalachian, Midwest, Florida Instructional, Florida State, Texas and Venezuelan Leagues along the way, having been selected to officiate Texas and International League playoffs.

Gosney is from Newark, Ohio and resides in Lakeland, FL and wears the sleeve uniform number 40. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound Gosney, who makes his MLB debut at the age of 30, is an alum of Ohio State University, where he earned a degree in Accounting. Gosney officiated the 2013 Arizona Fall League and was one-for-two (100% accuracy) in Replay Reviews during 2014 MLB Spring Training. He ejected Nationals left fielder Bryce Harper on March 26 for arguing an out call at first base (QOC = Correct).

MLB Ejection S7: Jeff Gosney (S1; Bryce Harper)

1B Umpire Jeff Gosney ejected Nationals LF Bryce Harper for arguing an out call in the top of the 4th inning of the Nationals-Cardinals game. With none out and none on, Harper hit a 2-2 pitch from Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright to second baseman Mark Ellis, who threw to first baseman Matt Adams as Harper arrived at first base. Replays indicate Adams caught Ellis' throw and tagged first base prior to Harper's arrival, the call was correct. At the time of the ejection, the Cardinals were leading, 3-0. The Cardinals ultimately won the contest, 3-2.

In the 1st, with one out and one on, Nationals baserunner R1 Bryce Harper attempted to steal second base on a 1-0 pitch from Mets pitcher Jenrry Mejia and throw from catcher Anthony Recker to second baseman Daniel Murphy. Upon instant replay review as the result of a challenge by Nationals Manager Matt Williams, Gosney's ruling that Murphy tagged Harper prior to Harper touching second base was overturned, the call was incorrect. At the time of the review, the contest was tied, 0-0.

In the 9th, with one out and one on, Nationals batter Adrian Sanchez hit a 0-0 pitch from Mets pitcher Bobby Parnell to shortstop Ruben Tejada, who threw to first baseman Lucas Duda as Sanchez arrived at first base. Upon instant replay review as the result of a challenge by Nationals Manager Matt Williams, Gosney's ruling that Duda caught the ball and tagged first base prior to Sanchez's touch arrival was affirmed, the call was correct. At the time of the review, the Mets were leading, 3-1. The Mets ultimately won the contest, 3-1.

Minor League Ejection of Week: Jeff Gosney (2, 3, 4)

Welcome to the Minor League Ejection of the Week, showcasing the brightest Triple-A talent and biggest MiLB meltdowns and a "Thank You" to UEFL'er Russ, who has been filling us in on all the AAA ejection action.

Gosney ejects Saveur.

This week's ejection is courtesy of AAA umpire Jeff Gosney, who threw out three Pawtucket Red Sox: Manager Arnie Beyeler, Pitching Roach Rich Sauveur and pitcher Jose De La Torre following a home run (reversed) call. At the MLB level, Jeff Kellogg's crew doled out two ejections for a reversed call of their own.

In the bottom of the 8th inning of the International League's Wilkes-Barre Yankees-Pawtucket Red Sox contest, with one out and one on, Yankees batter Melky Mesa hit a 0-0 fastball from De La Torre to deep left field and toward the foul pole. Initially ruled a foul ball by home plate umpire Gosney, after consultation with crewmates Chris Ward (1B) and A.J. Johnson (3B, working at the second base "B" position, or "Position 3"), the call was reversed to that of a home run. Limited replays do not indicate the flight of the ball relative to the foul line, the call is inconclusive. At the time of the ejections, the Yankees (Scranton/WB) were leading, 8-2. The Yankees (Scranton/WB) ultimately won the contest, 8-5.
