Replays indicate that after oversliding the base with his hand, the runner's foot touched second base and no tag was applied while the runner was off the base, the call was incorrect. MLB Ejection 114 - John Tumpane (4; Bud Black)

3B Umpire John Tumpane ejected Rockies manager Bud Black (Replay Review decision that overturned HP Umpire Marvin Hudson's out call/home plate collision no-call to safe/violation; QOCN) in the bottom of the 5th inning of the #Rockies-#Padres game. With two out and two on (R1, R2), Padres batter Ha-Seong Kim hit a 0-0 sinker from Rockies pitcher Jake Bird on a ground ball to left fielder Connor Joe, who threw to catcher Brian Serven as Padres baserunner R2 Wil Myers arrived at home plate, ruled out by HP Umpire Hudson. Upon Replay Review as the result of a challenge by Padres manager Bob Melvin, Hudson's call was overturned to safe with the Replay Official ruling that Serven violated baseball's home plate collision rule by improperly blocking the runner's access to home plate. Replays indicate catcher Serven appeared to initially position himself to the front and side of home plate, giving runner Myers a path, before shuffling to his left in response to the trajectory of LF Joe's throw, which is legal, the call was incorrect.* At the time of the ejection, the Padres were leading, 4-3. The Padres ultimately won the contest, 13-5.

HP Umpire Malachi Moore ejected Rockies manager Bud Black (out of the base path call; QOCN) in the bottom of the 6th inning of the #Padres-#Rockies game. With none out and two on (R2, R3), Rockies batter Garrett Hampson hit a 2-1 changeup from Padres pitcher Nabil Crismatt on the ground to first baseman Eric Hosmer, who threw to catcher Austin Nola as Rockies baserunner R3 Sam Hilliard attempted to score, ruled out by HP Umpire Moore for running more than three feet to avoid a tag. Replays indicate that Padres catcher Nola failed to catch the baseball; because Nola never possessed the ball, runner Hilliard's base path was never established (no legal tag attempt was ever made because a tag requires possession of the baseball), the call was incorrect.* At the time of the ejection, the Padres were leading, 6-3. The Rockies ultimately won the contest, 10-6.

*OBR's Definition of Terms: "A TAG is the action of a fielder in touching a base with their body while holding the ball securely and firmly in their hand or glove; or touching a runner with the ball, or with their hand or glove holding the ball (not including hanging laces alone), while holding the ball securely and firmly in their hand or glove. It is not a tag, however, if simultaneously or immediately following their touching a base or touching a runner, the fielder drops the ball. MLB Ejection 066 - Bill Welke (2; Bud Black)

1B Umpire Bill Welke ejected Rockies Manager Bud Black (out of the base path call; QOCY) in the bottom of the 4th inning of the Mets-Rockies game. With one out and one on (R1), Rockies batter Gerardo Parra hit a line drive to Mets first baseman Wilmer Flores, who caught the batted ball on the fly and reached to tag baserunner R1 Trevor Story as he attempted to return to first base, ruled out by Welke for running more than three feet from his base path to avoid being tagged.* Replays indicate that as Flores fielded the ball and began his tag attempt, runner Story initially veered to his right and his waist was contained within the horizontal confines of the baseline between first and second base; by the conclusion of the play, Story's waist appeared to have deviated by more than three feet from this direct path to first base as he avoided Flores' tag and lunged back into the base from the right-field side of the bag, the call was correct.^ Ruling was reviewed and affirmed by the UEFL Appeals Board (5-3-1), the call was correct. At the time of the ejection, the Mets were leading, 3-1. The Mets ultimately won the contest, 12-2.

A runner’s base path is established when the tag attempt occurs and is a straight line from the runner to the base he is attempting to reach safely."
^The Wendelstedt interpretation concerning the base path holds that the "center of [the runner's] body" shall be used as the primary point of consideration for determining where a base path has been established and by what distance a runner has deviated from it.

*R1 Story's mistake here was taking a step to his right (toward the third-base line) as Flores was completing his catch and beginning his tag attempt, thus restricting his legal base path and ability to avoid Flores' tag attempt. Had Story instead veered to his left (toward the right-field wall), his base path would not have been as greatly restricted to the outfield side (his left), and he likely would have stayed within his three-foot allotment, all things equal. Recall, the runner chooses his starting point and establishes his base path; the fielder by his actions of attempting a tag (or imminent play if no physical attempt is made) chooses at which point the runner's position is captured and at which point the base path is established.
