MLB Ejections 067-8 - Doug Eddings (Boone, Ausmus)

HP Umpire Doug Eddings ejected Yankees manager Aaron Boone and bench coach Brad Ausmus (Replay Review denial because New York took too long to challenge; QOCY) in the top of the 6th inning of the #Yankees-#Rays game. With none out and one on, Yankees batter Paul Goldschmidt swung and missed at a 2-2 changeup from Rays pitcher Shane McLanahan as Yankees baserunner R1 José Caballero attempted to steal second base, thrown out by Rays catcher Nick Fortes to 2B Ben Williamson, ruled out by 2B Umpire Emil Jimenez. Crew Chief Eddings then denied Boone's request to file a manager's challenge, ruling that Boone exceeded the allotted time limit to initiate a challenge. Replays indicate Boone signaled for the challenge by placing his hands on his ears approximately 17 seconds after the conclusion of 2B Umpire Jimenez's out call, the denial call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the Rays were leading, 2-0. The Rays ultimately won the contest, 3-0.

These are Doug Eddings (88)'s 1st and 2nd ejections of 2026.

MLB Ejection 184 - David Rackley (1; Brad Ausmus)

3B Umpire David Rackley ejected Angels Manager Brad Ausmus (no-stop balk no-call re Boston pitcher Brandon Workman; QOCY) in the bottom of the 9th inning of the #RedSox-#Angels game. With two out and one on (R1), Angels batter Brian Goodwin fouled a pitch from Workman after which Ausmus was ejected for arguing the umpires' no-stop balk no-calls on Workman's delivery, alleging that the Red Sox closer delivered from Set Position without coming to a stop in contravention of Rule 6.02(a)(13).^ Replays indicate Workman did appear to come to a stop during his pitching cadence out of Set Position, the no-call was correct.* Original Ruling was reviewed and reversed by the UEFL Appeals Board (1-6), the call was incorrect. At the time of the ejection, the Red Sox were leading, 4-3. The Red Sox ultimately on the contest, 4-3.

This is David Rackley (86)'s first ejection of 2019.
David Rackley now has 2 points in the UEFL Standings (4 Prev + 2 MLB - 4 Incorrect Call = 2).
Crew Chief Larry Vanover now has 22 points in Crew Division (22 Previous + 0 QOCN = 22).
*Rule 6.02(a)(13) states, "It is a balk when—The pitcher delivers the pitch from Set Position without
coming to a stop."
*Precedent: The UEFL Appeals Board in E-077 Scheurwater ruled that Orioles pitcher Darren O'Day failed to come to a complete stop as required by rule and, thus, overturned the Original Ruling holding that the pitcher did stop. The primary difference between the O'Day balk and the Workman non-balk is that O'Day's motion was all in the same direction via a subtle swooping downward motion, whereas Workman's bringing hands together backward is tougher to adjudicate from the available replays.
Related PostMLB Ejections 077-78 - Stu Scheurwater (2-3; BAL x2) (6/25/18).

The Original Ruling holds that Workman's 0-0 and 0-2 deliveries fall under "call confirmed" territory (Workman conclusively stopped), while the 0-1 delivery is a "call stands" (replays are inconclusive as to whether Workman came to a complete stop, so the call on the field prevails).

MLB Ejection 077 - Jeremie Rehak (4; Brad Ausmus)

HP Umpire Jeremie Rehak ejected Angels Manager Brad Ausmus (balls/strikes; QOCY) in the middle of the 4th inning of the Mariners-Angels game. Following the conclusion of the top of the inning, Rehak ejected Ausmus for arguing balls and strikes during an inning break discussion. Replays indicate of the six callable pitches thrown by Angels pitcher Jose Suarez in the top of the 4th inning (6/6, 100% accuracy), the call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the Mariners were leading, 2-1. The Mariners ultimately won the contest, 9-3.

This is Jeremie Rehak (35)'s fourth ejection of 2019.
Jeremie Rehak now has 2 points in the UEFL Standings (-2 Prev + 2 AAA + 2 Correct Call = 2).
Crew Chief Jerry Meals now has -8 points in Crew Division (-9 Previous + 1 Correct Call = -8).

*UEFL Rule 6-5-c prohibits QOC adjudication of balls and strikes from a previous inning; however, to illustrate a point made during Episode 15 of The Plate Meeting, let's discuss the Mike Trout at-bat in the third inning referred to by Angels TV. The issues with vertical pitches, ruled strikes one and two, concern pz values of 3.58 and 3.64 for a placeholder sz_top value of 3.47. Accounting for the radius of the baseball, the pz value of 3.58 becomes a bona fide strike by 0.156 inches, while the 3.64 value becomes a MOE strike by 0.432. The accompanying video diagrams these strike calls during Trout's at-bat, wherein a misleading onscreen strike zone graphic deceives consumers into believing the umpire has made an incorrect call.

Especially discerning viewers will note that I drew the line from the bottom-most point of the "top of uniform pants" to the bottom-most point of the "top of the shoulders," which means the zone used for this analysis is the lowest possible zone...yet even with this lowest-possible zone, the vertical strike zone calls are correct.

MLB Ejections 172-173 - Quinn Wolcott (McCann, Ausmus)

HP Umpire Quinn Wolcott ejected Tigers C James McCann and Manager Brad Ausmus (ball four call; QOCY) in the bottom of the 3rd inning of the Tigers-Indians game. With two out and one on (R1), Indians batter Jay Bruce took a 3-2 fastball from Tigers pitcher Buck Farmer for a called fourth ball. Replays indicate the pitch was located off the outer edge of home plate and thigh-high (px -1.007, pz 2.288) while all prior pitches were properly officiated (balls one through three were further off the plate than the fourth ball), the call was correct.* At the time of the ejections, the Indians were leading, 4-1. The Indians ultimately won the contest, 5-3.

These are Quinn Wolcott (81)'s second and third ejections of the 2017 MLB regular season.
Quinn Wolcott now has 14 points in the UEFL Standings (6 Prev + 2*[2 MLB + 2 Correct Call] = 14).
Crew Chief Paul Emmel now has 9 points in Crew Division (7 Previous + 2 Correct Calls = 9).
*UEFL Rule 6-2-b-1 (Kulpa Rule): |0| < STRIKE < |.748| < BORDERLINE < |.914| < BALL.
*The pitch was located 3.108 horizontal inches from being deemed an incorrect call.
Related: After Farmer walked ensuing batter Carlos Santana on four pitches (all correctly officiated as balls), Farmer's first pitch to Indians batter Yandy Diaz eluded replacement catcher John Hicks' glove and struck Wolcott in his upper left shoulder/traditional-style facemask, resulting in an injury delay. Wolcott remained in the game in the immediate aftermath of the fateful pitch.
