MLB Ejections 008-9 - Vic Carapazza (ATL-LAA Fight)

1B Umpire Vic Carapazza ejected Braves pitcher Reynaldo López and Angels DH Jorge Soler (fighting) in the bottom of the 5th inning of the #Braves-#Angels game. With two out and one on, Angels batter Jorge Soler took a 0-0 fastball for a called first ball, precipitating a benches-clearing brawl. Replays indicate the pitch was located over the inner half of home plate and above the batter's head, the call was irrecusable. At the time of the ejections, the Braves were leading, 4-2. The Braves ultimately won the contest, 7-2.

MLB Ejections 172-3 - Brock Ballou (2-3; ATL x2)

HP Umpire Brock Ballou ejected Braves manager Brian Snitker and 1B Matt Olson (batter-runner interference call; QOCY) in the bottom of the 6th inning of the #Pirates-#Braves game. With none out and none on, Braves batter Olson hit a 3-1 changeup from Pirates pitcher Bubba Chandler on a fly ball into foul territory, whereupon catcher Henry Davis and Olson collided, resulting in an interference call by HP Umpire Ballou. Replays indicate that after hitting the fly ball, batter-runner Olson remained at home plate and failed to avoid catcher Davis as required by rule, and that the tangle-untangle exemption to the interference rule did not apply because Olson did not attempt to run toward first base, the call was correct.* At the time of the ejections, the Pirates were leading, 3-1. The Pirates ultimately won the contest, 3-1.

With none out and one on, Braves batter Matt Olson hit a home run off Marlins pitcher Ryan Gusto. Ensuing Braves batter Acuña then took a 0-0 sinker from Gusto inside for a hit-by-pitch. Replays indicate the pitch struck Acuña on the elbow, leading to a benches-clearing incident, resulting in warnings, the call was irrecusable. At the time of the ejection, the Braves were leading, 3-0. The Braves ultimately won the contest, 12-1.

With one out and two on, Cubs batter Jeimer Candelario took a first-pitch fastball from Braves pitcher Darius Vines for a called first strike, ruled a passed ball by catcher Sean Murphy that allowed Cubs baserunner R3 Cody Bellinger to score and R1 Seiya Suzuki to advance to second base. Replays indicate the pitched ball first made contact with the batter's bat before passing the catcher, the call was incorrect. At the time of the ejection, the game was tied, 1-1. The Braves ultimately won the contest, 6-5, in 10 innings.

MLB Ejection 012 - Manny Gonzalez (1; Brian Snitker)

3B Umpire Manny Gonzalez ejected Braves manager Brian Snitker (foul ball call overturned via Replay Review to fair & runner placement) in the top of the 2nd inning of the #Braves-#Royals game. With none out and one on (R1), Braves batter Matt Olson hit a 1-1 fastball from Royals pitcher Brady Singer on a line drive to left fielder Edward Olivares, originally ruled a foul ball by 3B Umpire Gonzalez and overturned via Replay Review as as result of a manager's challenge by Snitker. As part of the Replay Review, the Replay Official placed runners at first and second base. Replays indicate that Braves baserunner R1 Ronald Acuña Jr returned to first base to tag up and didn't leave until the ball was dropped and 3B Umpire Gonzalez had called the foul ball, at which time outfielder Olivares had stopped playing, and that batter-runner Olson's advancement was limited by preceding baserunner Acuña's placement, the call was correct. At the time of the ejection, the Braves were leading, 5-1. The Braves ultimately won the contest, 10-3.

This is a late-add ejection report. 4/11/21: 3B Umpire Alfonso Marquez ejected Braves manager Brian Snitker (Replay Review decision that upheld HP Umpire Lance Barrett's safe call) during the #Phillies-#Braves game. With one out and one on (R3), Phillies batter Didi Gregorius hit a 1-2 fastball from Braves pitcher Will Smith on a fly ball to left fielder Marcell Ozuna as Phillies baserunner R3 Alec Bohm tagged up and attempted to score, ruled safe at home plate by HP Umpire Barrett on a tag attempt by Braves catcher Travis d'Arnaud, and affirmed via Replay Review as the result of a Crew Chief Review by 3B Umpire Marquez. Replays fail to conclusively indicate whether Bohm's foot touched home plate but do conclusively indicate that if Bohm's foot touched home plate, the runner arrived prior to the catcher's tag, the call (call stands) was correct. At the time of the ejection, the Phillies were leading, 7-6. The Phillies ultimately won the contest, 7-6.

With none out and none on, Braves batter Ronald Acuna took a first-pitch fastball from Marlins pitcher Elieser Hernandez for a hit-by-pitch. Replays indicate the HBP was located inside and struck Acuna in the lower back, resulting in warnings issued by HP Umpire Alan Porter (see asterisk for related history), the call was irrecusable.* At the time of the ejection, the game was tied, 0-0. The Braves ultimately won the contest, 5-1.

With two out and two on (R1, R3), Braves batter Ronald Acuna took a 0-2 fastball from Pirates pitcher Joe Musgrove for a called third strike. Replays indicate the pitch was located over the outer half of home plate and at the midpoint (px 0.22, pz 3.75 [sz_top 3.54 / RAD 3.67 / MOE 3.75]), the call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the Pirates were leading, 2-1. The Braves ultimately won the contest, 6-5.

With two out and one on (R3), Donaldson took a first-pitch fastball from Musgrove for a hit-by-pitch. Replays indicate the pitch was located offer the inner edge and chest-high, contacting Donaldson in the upper portion of his uniform jersey and resulting in a bench-clearing incident; warnings had not previously been issued (first HBP of the game), the call was irrecusable. At the time of the ejections, the Pirates were leading, 1-0. The Braves ultimately won the contest, 13-7.

In the 2nd, with two out and two on (R2, R3), Marlins batter Urena took a first-pitch fastball from Gausman for a called first ball. Replays indicate the pitch was thrown behind Urena and was ankle-high; no warnings had previously been issued, the call was irrecusable. At the time of Gausman's ejection, the game was tied, 1-1.

In the 6th, with one out and one on (R1), Marlins batter Jorge Alfaro took a 3-0 pitch from Braves pitcher Touki Toussaint for a called first strike. Replays indicate the pitch was located around the hollow of the trailing knee and over the outer half of home plate; StatCast malfunctioned and failed to track this pitch; there are no px nor pz variables to report because the pitch tracking computer failed to track the following pitches during this at-bat: Ball 2 (Pitch #2), Ball 3 (Pitch #3), Strike 1 (Pitch #4), and the pitch Alfaro put into play (Pitch #6), the call was irrecusable.* At the time of Mattingly's ejection, the Braves were leading, 5-1. The Braves ultimately won the contest, 7-2.

With one out and none on, Braves batter Charlie Culberson attempted to check his swing on a 0-1 slider from Mets pitcher Jeurys Familia, ruled a swinging second strike by Bellino. Play was reviewed and adjudicated by the UEFL Appeals Board (9-0-0), the call was correct. At the time of the ejection, the Mets were leading, 6-3. The Mets ultimately won the contest, 6-3.
