MLB Ejection 112 - Ryan Additon (1; Miguel Cairo)

HP Umpire Ryan Additon ejected Nationals interim manager Miguel Cairo (ball three call; QOCY) in the top of the 6th inning of the #Nationals-#Astros game. With one out and one on, Astros batter Cooper Hummel took a 2-2 curveball from Nationals pitcher MacKenzie Gore for a called third ball before hitting the next pitch for a two-run home run. Replays indicate the pitch was located over the outer edge of home plate and above the midpoint (px 0.75, pz 3.30 [sz_top 3.15 / RAD 3.27]), the call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the Astros were leading, 6-1. The Astros ultimately won the contest, 9-1.

This is Ryan Additon (67)'s 1st ejection of 2025.
*This pitch was located 1.32 vertical inches from being deemed incorrect.

MLB Ejection 029 - Ryan Additon (1; Pat Murphy)

HP Umpire Ryan Additon ejected Brewers manager Pat Murphy (backswing contact [not interference]; QOCY) in the bottom of the 9th inning of the #Rays-#Brewers game. With one out and two on, Brewers batter Jake Bauers attempted to strike a 1-2 slider from Rays pitcher Jason Adam for a swinging third strike. As the pitch passed home plate, it eluded catcher RenĂ© Pinto before batter Bauers' bat made contact with Pinto's head on the backswing, resulting in "Time" and dead ball call from HP Umpire Additon, who called Bauers for inadvertent backswing contact (colloquially known as "backswing interference" although this type of contact is not interference). As a result, Brewers baserunner Sal Frelick, who had slid across home plate on the wild pitch, was returned to third base and Bauers was declared out (since the dead ball strike on a 1-2 count resulted in strike three). Replays indicate Bauers' bat made contact with Pinto's head on the backswing, the call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the Rays were leading, 1-0. The Rays ultimately won the contest, 1-0.

This is Ryan Additon (67)'s 1st ejection of 2024.
*Official Baseball Rule 6.03(a)(3) Comment states, "If a batter strikes at a ball and misses and swings so hard they carry the bat all the way around and, in the umpire’s judgment, unintentionally hit the catcher or the ball in back of them on the backswing, it shall be called a strike only (not interference). The ball will be dead, however, and no runner shall advance on the play."
In OBR/NCAA, this is inadvertent backswing contact (not actual interference).
In NFHS, this is follow-through interference (which is actual interference).

HP Umpire Ryan Additon ejected Cardinals pitcher Miles Mikolas (throwing at Cubs batter Ian Happ) and 1B Umpire Will Little ejected Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol (arguing Mikolas' ejection) in the top of the 1st inning of the #Cubs-#Cardinals game. With two out and none on, Happ swung at a 2-0 slider from Mikolas, Happ's bat on his backswing (aka follow-through in NFHS) hitting Cardinals catcher Willson Contreras in the head, injuring Contreras and forcing him out of the game. Mikolas' next pitch to Happ was located inside and shoulder-high for ball three while the subsequent pitch resulted in a hit-by-pitch, striking Happ in the hip. At the time of the ejections, the game was tied, 0-0. The Cubs ultimately won the contest, 10-3.

Umpires Forget Count - How To Recover a Lost Number

Baseball is primarily a sport of counting: four balls, three strikes, three outs, and whoever's score is greater than the other team's usually wins. HP Umpire Ryan Additon momentarily lost track of the count in Minnesota after calling a strike and forgot to add it on, Twins batter Royce Lewis remaining at home plate Guardians pitcher Tanner Bibee held up three fingers. After crew consultation, the count was fixed and batter Lewis properly declared out on three strikes.

Umpires behind the plate generally use an indicator (sometimes incorrectly termed a "clicker" on TV) to keep track of balls and strikes, but sometimes during the course of a long game or season, it's easy to lose focus. At the MLB (and MiLB) level, and for those NCAA with video replay capability, fortunately, checking the count is a reviewable play—it is a Crew Chief review so no manager has to challenge it.

How do you to count to three? You just Add it on | Video as follows:

MLB Hires Ryan Additon & John Libka to Full-Time Staff

With Gerry Davis and Brian Gorman's retirements, MLB has hired call-up umpires Ryan Additon and John Libka to its full-time staff. Joe West leads a short list of additional veteran umps whose retirements have created vacancies on the MLBU roster and we will announce both those retirements and additional new-hire replacements in the coming weeks.

First publicly announced by the Wendelstedt Umpire School where Additon and Libka serve as instructors, the first two hires of 2022 during the uncertainty of both COVID and an ongoing lockout and contract dispute between MLB team owners and the players' union are two young umpires who score highly on a number of baseball officiating metrics.

For instance, John Libka, according to UmpScorecards, once again took the crown as the most accurate umpire, overall, in calling balls and strikes during the 2021 season.

Ryan Additon made his major league debut on May 21, 2017 in Minnesota and joins the full-time staff with 381 games of big league experience. Additon has worked the Gulf Coast, New York-Penn, Midwest, Florida State, Arizona Instructional, Southern, Arizona Fall, and International (aka Triple-A East) Leagues.

John Libka made his MLB debut just one week following Additon's, on May 27, 2017 in Chicago alongside Tom Hallion's crew, and has just 10 fewer games in the league (371) than Additon. Libka, long regarded as MLB's most accurate plate umpire dating back to the Boston University umpire study, journeyed through the Gulf Coast, New York-Penn, Midwest, Florida State, Eastern, Arizona Fall, and Pacific Coast (Triple-A West) Leagues.

Both Additon and Libka officiated the 2017 AFL Fall Stars Game.

Running a Batter Back to Home Plate - Automatic Out Rule

Chicago's Javier Baez reached on an unusual fielder's choice in Pittsburgh Thursday as a ground ball turned into a rundown of Cubs batter-runner Baez between home plate and first base, with HP Umpire Ryan Additon left to make a sudden out/safe decision on Cubs baserunner R2 Willson Contreras' head-first slide into home plate.

Welcome to baseball's automatic out rule for batter-runners who run back to home plate.

Play: With two out and one on (R2) in the top of the 3rd inning of the Cubs-Pirates game, batter Baez hit a 0-2 fastball from Pirates pitcher Tyler Anderson on the ground to third baseman Erik Gonzalez, who threw to first baseman Will Craig as baserunner R2 Contreras ran toward and rounded third base. When Craig stepped off of first base and down the line toward home plate to receive Gonzalez's throw, batter-runner Baez began retreating toward home plate with Craig in pursuit and Contreras still advancing toward home as well. Baez and Contreras arrived at the dirt circle surrounding home plate at around the same time, and Craig opted to throw to catcher Michael Perez to attempt to retire Contreras, whom Additon declared safe. Perez then threw wildly to first base and Baez took second base on the fielder's choice + error.

Rule
: Believe it or not, the odd instance of a batter-runner retreating toward home plate is covered by rule in what may be deemed baseball's automatic out for batter-runners. The MLB Umpire Manual states, simply, "In situations where the batter-runner gets in a rundown between first and home, if the batter-runner retreats and reaches home plate, the batter-runner shall be declared out." This is actually an interpretation of the obstruction rule which states that obstruction may not be called on a fielder who impedes the batter-runner as the BR retreats toward home, but obstruction still does apply to a batter-runner advancing or running toward first base.
Finally, as in Official Baseball Rule 5.08 Comment, "No run shall score during a play in which the third out is made by the batter-runner before they touch first base."

Analysis: Because batter-runner Baez did not make it all the way back to home plate itself (the batter-runner need not touch home plate, but simply arrive at the edge of home plate to be considered to have reached it), the automatic out rule for reaching home plate does not apply; baserunner Contreras beats the tag at the plate and is properly declared safe (sidebar: there is a difference between a declaration of "safe" and a determination as to whether a run scores or not. This play at the plate requires a safe/out mechanic; the umpire may nullify the run after the play has concluded, if applicable). Because no run may score during a play in which the third out is made by the batter-runner prior to first base, Baez still must make it safely to first base in order for Contreras' run to count (at this point, Contreras is safe, but his run remains in jeopardy).

Food for Thought
: After fielder Craig runs batter-runner Baez into the dirt circle surrounding home plate (but, notably, not all the way to home plate), Craig throws to catcher Perez to play on runner Contreras. Keeping our attention on Craig and Baez, we see that after Craig releases the ball and is no longer in possession of nor in the act of fielding it, Baez turns toward first base and collides with Craig. This is obstruction and Baez is eligible for such a call because Baez was moving in the direction of first base when it occurred [e.g., the MLBUM interpretation regarding obstruction going back to home plate does not apply]. Obstruction on the batter-runner prior to first base in this situation is Type A (Type 1) obstruction, meaning that had it been called, the ball would be dead and the batter-runner awarded (at least) first base, meaning catcher Perez's wild throw/error into right field never would have happened (OBR 6.01(h)).
Finally: Because Baez has the legal right to retreat toward home plate, as long he does not reach it, this is likewise not interference. Even so, recall that it is not interference by a retired runner (assuming the runner were to have been retired) simply because the retired runner continues to advance or retreat after being put out (OBR 6.01(a)(5) Comment).

Conclusion: All of this could have been prevented if fielder Craig were to have simply strolled over and stepped on first base to retire Baez for the third out of the inning. Instead, the Cubs scored two bonus runs and ultimately defeated Pittsburgh by two runs, 5-3.

2021 No-Hitter 6, Ryan Additon (1; Cory Kluber)

A day after Angel Hernandez's no-hitter in Seattle, HP Umpire Ryan Additon called New York Yankees pitcher Cory Kluber's no-no against the Rangers in Texas Wednesday night, joined by 1B Umpire and Crew Chief Bill Miller, 2B Umpire Doug Eddings, and 3B Umpire Brian Knight.

In accordance with UEFL tradition, the following are umpire Additon's three plate scores, including a perfect 100% (123/123) performance under ML Private/Zone Evaluation Equivalent conditions, 97.6% (120/123) UEFL f/x score, and 91.1% (112/123) value for ML Public / the broadcast-facing zero error system.

The UEFL f/x look:
Balls: 79 called balls outside strike zone / 3 called balls within strike zone = 79/82 = 96.3% accuracy.
Strikes: 41 called strikes within strike zone / 0 called strike outside strike zone = 41/41 = 100% accuracy.
Total Raw Accuracy Score for Additon = 120/`12 = 97.6% accuracy (+3 NYY/skew favored Yanks).

MLB Ejection 178 - Ryan Additon (1; Don Mattingly)

HP Umpire Ryan Additon ejected Marlins Manager Don Mattingly (substitution/batting out of order appeal denial; QOCY) in the top of the 8th inning of the Brewers-Marlins game. With one out, Brewers batter Manny Piña, batting seventh, singled to center, before Mattingly appealed to Additon that the Brewers had batted out of turn. Additon's official scorecard, however, placed Piña in the seventh spot, meaning the Brewers had properly batted in order. After batter Brett Phillips, batting eighth, flew out to center fielder Christian Yelich for the inning's second out, Brewers Manager Craig Counsell substituted pinch hitter Jett Bandy to replace pitcher Jared Hughes, batting ninth. After Bandy walked, batter Eric Sugar, batting first, stepped to the plate. Additon thus denied Mattingly's batting out of turn appeal, ruling that the Brewers had batted in the proper order by having Piña hit seventh and Bandy (for Hughes) hit ninth. Replays indicate that the Brewers properly batted their seventh-eighth-ninth positions in their proper order, the call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the Brewers were leading, 10-2. The Brewers ultimately won the contest, 10-2.

This is Ryan Additon (67)'s first ejection of the 2017 MLB regular season.
Ryan Additon now has 2 points in the UEFL Standings (-3 Prev + 3 AAA + 2 Correct Call = 2).
Crew Chief Bill Miller now has 9 points in Crew Division (8 Previous + 1 Correct Call = 9).
*The Miller Park scoreboard displayed an incorrect double-switch substitution (seven-for-nine, and nine-for-seven) when Counsell had entered a straight switch (seven-for-seven, and nine-for-nine). Mattingly referred to the erroneous scoreboard posting in his appeal and argued that Additon's card failed to reflect the official batting order, which Mattingly incorrectly believed was displayed on the scoreboard prior to the start of the inning (the above graphic is a glimpse of the corrected scoreboard after Piña had already come to bat).
*Rule 6.03(b), Batting Out of Turn, states, "(1) A batter shall be called out, on appeal, when he fails to bat in his proper turn, and another batter completes a time at bat in his place." Mattingly's timing of the appeal was proper; Piña just didn't bat out of turn.

This is the 178th ejection report of 2017.
This is the 84th Manager ejection of 2017.
This is Miami's 7th ejection of 2017, 1st in the NL East (MIA 7; WAS 5; ATL 4; NYM 3; PHI 2).

MiLB Ejection - Ryan Additon (Yoan Moncada)

What are fill-in umpires up to when not working MLB games? Minor league ejections, naturally...

Ryan Additon ejects Moncada for helmet toss.
Though ejections are one of many aspects of umpiring that the fill-in class hones down on the farm, they are illustrative of what to expect at the next level...at least sometimes they are...

Take the case of 2B Umpire Ryan Additon's ejection of Charlotte Knights second baseman Yoan Moncada during Tuesday's Knights-Red Wings game in Rochester.

With two out and one on (R1), Knights baserunner R1 Moncada attempted to steal second base as Red Wings catcher John Ryan Murphy threw to Engelb Vielma, who applied a tag as Moncada's hand arrived at the bag.

These days, a head-first slide on a stolen base attempt likely won't result in an ejection at the Major League level due to Replay Review's existence, but no such recourse is available at the Minor League level. As a testament to video review's unavailability in Triple-A, replays are inconclusive as to the caught stealing call.

Cue Moncada, who spiked his helmet in response to Additon's out call, and in doing so, earned a near-automatic ejection for violation of one of baseball's Standards for Removal from the Game (throwing equipment in disgust).

HP Umpire Ryan Additon ejected Barons 3B Jeremy Farrell and Suns pitcher Matt Ramsey for fighting, Suns Manager Andy Barkett for arguing Ramsey's ejection, Suns catcher Wilfredo Gimenez for Unsportsmanlike-NEC (inciting a fight) and Barons RF Josh Richmond and LF/bench player Michael Earley for fighting in the top of the 9th inning of the Barons-Suns game. With two out and one on, Barons batter Luis Sierra hit a 0-2 pitch from Suns P Ramsey to right fielder Alex Burg. Replays indicate that after Barons baserunner R2 Farrell scored, he bumped opponent Ramsey who then followed Farrell to his dugout, resulting in the first fracas.

After HP Umpire Additon, 3B Umpire Jose Esteras and 1B Umpire/Crew Chief Matt McCoy conferenced, the trio approached Suns Manager Barkett to inform him of Ramsey's ejection, the subsequent argument resulting in Barkett's ejection for continued argument resulting in a further delay of game. As Barkett threw his hat at the umpires, returned to the Suns dugout and threw two bags of baseballs onto the playing field, Suns C Wilfredo Gimenez charged at the opposing Barons dugout, resulting in a second melee and the remaining ejections for throwing punches during the fight. At the time of the ejections, the Barons were leading, 5-1. The Barons ultimately won the contest, 5-1.
