Major League Umpiring Debut: Jon Byrne (59)

Umpire Jon Byrne made his MLB debut during the Mets-Nationals game in Washington on May 16. Byrne joined chief Dana DeMuth's crew, serving as Friday evening's second base umpire alongside 3B Umpire Lance Barrett, 1B Umpire Ed Hickox and home plate umpire DeMuth.

Umpire Jon Byrne, 1st MLB Aussie Ump.
Byrne is on the International League umpire roster for the 2014 season, which is his 4th season in the IL and AAA. After graduating from the Jim Evans Academy of Professional Umpiring (JEAPU) in 2004, he began his Minor League career in the 2005 Gulf Coast League, after which he worked the Northwest, Midwest, California, Eastern and Arizona Instructional Leagues before his promotion to Triple-A.

Byrne was born in Perth, Australia and becomes the first Australian native umpire to officiate in the Major Leagues. In Australia, Byrne got his start with the WA Baseball Umpires Association in 1998 after which he attended umpire's school in Adelaide; he worked the 2007-2010 Claxton Shield and 2011-2012 Australian Baseball League (ABL).

He resides in Charlotte, North Carolina and wears the sleeve uniform number 59 at the Major League level. The 5-foot-10, 143-pound May, who makes his MLB debut at the age of 30, will turn 31 in June and has an identical twin brother Kyle, who also officiated in Minor League Baseball.

MLB Instant replay Review S-09: Jon Byrne (S-1)

Instant replay confirmed 2B Umpire Jon Byrne's out call in the top of the 8th inning of the Cardinals-Mets game. With none out and one on, Cardinals baserunner R1 Mike O'Neill attempted to steal second base on a 1-2 pitch from Mets pitcher Vic Black to catcher Anthony Recker who threw to second baseman Wilmer Flores as O'Neill slid towards second base. Upon instant replay review as the result of a challenge by Cardinals Manager Mike Matheny, Byrne's ruling that Flores tagged O'Neill's left arm while O'Neill was not in contact with a base was upheld, the call was correct. At the time of the instant replay review, the Cardinals were leading, 5-3. The contest ultimately ended in a tie, 5-5.

This is Jon Byrne (59)'s 1st instant replay challenge/review of Spring Training.
Jon Byrne (59) is now 1/1 (100% Accuracy) in Instant Replay Reviews during Spring Training.

This is the 9th instant replay review of 2014 Spring Training.
Cardinals Manager Mike Matheny is now 0/2 (0% Success) in Instant Replay Challenges/Appeals this Spring.
Umpires are now 9/9 (100% Accuracy) in Instant Replay Reviews during 2014 MLB Spring Training.

Wrap: St. Louis Cardinals vs. New York Mets (Grapefruit League Spring Training), 3/7/14

Our minor league featured ejection is 1B Umpire Jon Byrne's toss of Indianapolis Indians Manager Dean Treanor during the pre-game umpires' conference at home plate on Sunday June 16. Treanor was reportedly upset about a game-ending out call at first base on Saturday night and attempted to argue the call with plate umpire Doug Vines during the lineup card exchange. With two out and two on and the Durham Bulls leading Indianapolis 4-2 on Saturday night, Indians batter Jared Goedert grounded to Bulls second baseman Mike Fontenot, who threw to first baseman Vince Belnome ahead of Goedert for the final out of the ballgame.
