MLB Debut of Umpire James Jean

Umpire James Jean made his MLB debut during Friday's Astros-Mets game in New York alongside Crew Chief Alan Porter, HP Umpire Jim Wolf, and 1B Umpire Ryan Blakney. Jean's first regular season game behind home plate will be Sunday, June 30.

Jean first officiated in the 2016 Gulf Coast Rookie League and Florida Instructional League, with stops at New York-Penn, South Atlantic, Florida State, "High-A East", Southern, and International Leagues.

He called the 2022 MiLB XM All-Star Futures game as the home plate umpire.

Jean wears sleeve number 61 (formerly worn by Bob Davidson) and is the first umpire to make his MLB debut in 2024. Other umpires on the 2024 Minor League Call-Up list having yet to debut in the major leagues are Austin Jones #77 and Jen Pawol #95.

MLB Debut of Umpire Brock Ballou

Umpire Brock Ballou made his MLB debut during Saturday's Rockies-Nationals doubleheader in Washington, DC alongside Crew Chief Larry Vanover, Junior Valentine, and Sean Barber. Ballou served as the first base umpire for Game 1 of the doubleheader and as the third base umpire for Game 2. Vanover worked the first game as HP Umpire with David Rackley serving as plate umpire for the second.

His first taste of professional baseball came in 2013 in the American Association under Kevin Winn. From there, Ballou began a minor league journey in the Appalachian League in 2014, since working in the Midwest League (2015), Carolina League (2016), Southern League (2017-19), Pacific Coast (2020), and Triple-A East [International] League (2021). Ballou has also officiated the Arizona Instructional League. He graduated from the Wendelstedt Umpire School.

Ballou wears sleeve number 119 and is the first umpire to make his MLB debut in 2022 (Ballou is the only umpire that has been added to the MiLB call-up list since 2020).

MLB Debut of Umpire Kyle McCrady

Umpire Kyle McCrady made his MLB debut during Friday's Rangers-Mariners game in Seattle alongside Crew Chief Lance Barrett, John Libka and Tripp GIbson.

Upon graduation from Washington State University (Vancouver), McCrady attended the MiLB Umpire Academy in 2013, working the Arizona, Northwest, California, Texas, and Pacific Coast Leagues.

He officiated the 2017 Texas League All-Star Game and 2018 All-Star Futures Game in Washington, DC.

McCrady is the 19th different umpire to make his MLB debut during the 2020 season.

MLB Debut of Umpire Dan Merzel

Umpire Dan Merzel made his MLB debut during Saturday's Cubs-Reds doubleheader in Cincinnati alongside chief Angel Hernandez's crew of umpires Will Little and Dan Bellino.

After graduating from the Jim Evans Academy of Professional Umpiring in 2010, Merzel began his Minor League career in the 2011 New York-Penn League, followed by stops in the South Atlantic, Arizona Instructional, Carolina, Eastern and International Leagues as well as the Arizona Fall League.

He officiated the 2015 XM All-Star Futures Game in Cincinnati, served as home plate umpire for the 2018 Triple-A All-Star Game in Columbus, and crew chief for the 2019 Triple-A National Championship Game.

Merzel played baseball at Johns Hopkins University, where he earned a degree from the college's engineering school.

Merzel is the 18th umpire to make his MLB debut during the 2020 regular season.

Umpire Junior Valentine made his MLB debut during Wednesday's Yankees-Braves doubleheader in Atlanta, joining Chief Mark Carlson's crew of James Hoye and Chad Whitson in Game 1.

After graduating from Wendelstedt's School, Valentine's Minor League Career traversed the 2011 Appalachian, Florida Instructional, Arizona Instructional, Carolina, Eastern, and Pacific Coast Leagues, as well as the Arizona Fall League.

He officiated the 2015 XM All-Star Futures Game in Cincinnati and 2019 Triple-A All-Star Game in El Paso. In college, he played baseball at Maryville (Tennessee).

Valentine is the 17th MiLB umpire to debut during MLB's 2020 regular season.

Umpire Ryan Wills made his MLB debut during Saturday's Marlins-Nationals doubleheader in Washington, DC with chief Ron Kulpa's crew of Chris Segal and Ramon De Jesus.

Wills began his Minor League career in 2011, officiating the Gulf Coast, Appalachian, South Atlantic, California, Carolina, Texas, Eastern, Florida Instructional, and International Leagues, as well as the Arizona Fall League following graduation from the Jim Evans Academy for Professional Umpiring.

He was the featured second umpire in Skyler Shown's 2019 ejection of Durham Bulls Manager Brady Williams.

MacKay joins the major leagues by way of the MiLB Umpire Academy and stops in the Florida Instructional, Pioneer, Florida State, Southern and Pacific Coast Leagues.

He officiated the 2017 Southern League All-Star Game in Florida and 2018 Southern League All-Star Game in Birmingham.

MacKay becomes the 14th rookie debut during MLB's shortened 2020 season.

Umpire David Arrieta made his MLB debut Friday during the Blue Jays-Rays game in Tampa Bay, joining chief Marty Foster and his crew of Sean Barber and Randy Rosenberg, who made his own MLB debut on August 4.

Venezuela's fifth umpire at the Major League level, Arrieta officiated in the Venezuelan, New York-Penn, Florida State, Southern, and Pacific Coast Leagues following graduation from the Jim Evans Academy for Professional Umpiring.

He also was assigned the 2016 Southern League All-Star Game.

Arrieta becomes the 13th rookie debut during MLB's shortened 2020 season.

Umpire Paul Clemons made his MLB debut Wednesday in Kansas City during the Reds-Royals doubleheader alongside chief Jeff Nelson and his crew of umpires John Tumpane and CB Bucknor.

A Jim Evans Academy of Professional Umpiring graduate in 2011, Clemons has officiated in the Midwest, Arizona Instructional, California, Eastern, Pacific Coast, and Arizona Fall Leagues, having worked the 2019 PCL Championship Series.

All in the Family: Paul's brother Charlie Clemons is a former Minor League Baseball umpire while his father Duane officiates at the NCAA level and has officiated college games with Charlie as a partner.

Not to be confused with former Astros pitcher Paul Clemens, who was ejected in 2014 for throwing at A's batter Jed Lowrie.

Umpire Malachi Moore made his MLB debut during Monday's Athletics-Diamondbacks game in Arizona alongside chief Marvin Hudson's crew with umpires Brian Knight and Mike Muchlinski, outside temperature at first pitch 111° F.

A Wendelstedt Umpire School graduate in 2012, Moore made his way through Minor League Baseball, including the California, Texas, Arizona Instructional, South Atlantic, and Pacific Coast Leagues, in addition to the Arizona Fall League.

He officiated the 2018 XM All-Star Futures Game in Washington, DC, and 2017 Texas League All-Star Game.

Moore spoke as part of the USA Baseball Dream Series in 2019 alongside MLB umpires Kerwin Danley and Adrian Johnson, with supervisor Cris Jones, about his path toward officiating, including his attendance at MLB's first Urban Youth Academy at the league's Compton, CA facility—Moore's hometown.

Umpire Nestor Ceja made his MLB debut Friday in Arizona alongside Crew Chief Alfonso Marquez, Chris Guccione, and Cory Blaser.

Ceja's first stops after graduation from the MiLB Umpire Academy were the 2013 Midwest and Florida Instructional Leagues, after which he called games in the California, Texas, and Pacific Coast Leagues, in addition to the Arizona Fall League.

He officiated the 2016 XM All-Star Futures Game in San Diego and is an instructor at the MiLB Umpire Training Academy.

In 2016, he ejected San Antonio Missions Manager Phillip Wellman, leading to an extended tirade.

Ceja is one of 10 rookie umpires to make his MLB debut during the 2020 regular season. He becomes the second Nestor in the history of baseball to serve as a major league umpire. The other—Nestor Chylak—wound up in the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Umpire Nate Tomlinson made his MLB debut during Friday's Angels-Rangers game in Arlington alongside Chief Bill Miller and his crew of Doug Eddings and fellow rookie Edwin Moscoso.

After graduating from the Jim Evans Academy of Professional Umpiring in 2010, Tomlinson worked his way through the minors, including the Arizona, Northwest, Midwest, Florida State, Texas, and Pacific Coast Leagues.

He officiated the 2017 XM All-Star Futures Game in Miami, as well as the 2016 Texas League All-Star Game.

Tomlinson enrolled in the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point while simultaneously umpiring in the minor leagues.

Tomlinson is the eighth rookie umpire to have an MLB debut during this 2020 regular season.

Bacchus graduated from the Wendelstedt Umpire School in 2012 and has officiated in Minor League Baseball's Arizona, New York-Penn, Florida Instructional Leagues, South Atlantic, Carolina, Eastern, and International Leagues, as well as the Arizona Fall League.

He officiated the 2017 XM All-Star Futures Game in Miami, served as crew chief for the 2019 International League Championship Game, and ran alongside Nic Lentz and Brennan Miller during the November 2019 Holly Springs Half Marathon on behalf of UMPS CARE Charities.

Umpire Adam Beck made his MLB debut Wednesday in Philadelphia during the Phillies-Yankees doubleheader, joining Chief Angel Hernandez and his crew of Will Little and Nic Lentz. Beck served as third base umpire for Game 1 and worked second base for Game 2.

Beck graduated from the MiLB Umpire Training Academy and began his professional career in the 2013 Appalachian League, followed by stops in the South Atlantic, Carolina, Southern, and International Leagues, as well as the Arizona Fall League.

He officiated the 2016 XM All-Star Futures Game in San Diego, 2019 International League Championship Series, and is an instructor at the MiLB Umpire Training Academy. He also officiated the 2018 AFL "Fall Stars" Game.

Beck is the sixth rookie umpire to have an MLB debut during this 2020 regular season.

MLB Debut of Umpire Randy Rosenberg

Umpire Randy Rosenberg made his MLB debut during Tuesday's Red Sox-Rays game in Tampa Bay alongside Chief Joe West and his crew of Stu Scheurwater and Hunter Wendelstedt.

After graduating in 2011, Rosenberg officiated in the Gulf Coast, Appalachian, South Atlantic, Carolina, Eastern, and International Leagues.

He officiated the 2018 Eastern League All-Star Game in Trenton, NJ.

Rosenberg, who wears sleeve number #113, is the fifth rookie umpire to make his MLB debut during the 2020 regular season.

MLB Debut of Umpire Lewis "Lew" Williams III

Umpire Lewis "Lew" Williams III made his MLB debut during Sunday's Rangers-Giants game, taking the place of injured ump Jim Wolf, who suffered a head injury on Saturday. Williams joined chief Jim Reynold's crew, alongside Lance Barrett and John Libka.

Williams began his Minor League career in 2011 after graduating from the Wendelstedt School, officiating his way through the Arizona, Northwest, South Atlantic, California, and Southern Leagues, before his current stop in Triple-A's Pacific Coast League.

Williams, who is serving on an umpiring "taxi squad" in the west division, is the fourth new umpire to make an MLB debut during the 2020 regular season.

Wolf is sitting out after reportedly enduring a concussion during his collision with Giants catcher Tyler Heineman, who upon arriving at the ballpark on Sunday and learning of Wolf's absence, tweeted, "My thoughts and prayers go out to you Jim Wolf. I’m very sorry and I hope you recover fast."

MLB Debut of Umpire Jeremy Riggs

Umpire Jeremy Riggs made his MLB debut during Tuesday's White Sox-Indians doubleheader alongside Chief Dan Iassogna and his crew of Ben May and Tripp Gibson.

Riggs, who officiated Game 1 of the double-dip at first base before shifting to third for the nightcap, began his Minor League career in 2009, officiating the Gulf Coast, Appalachian, South Atlantic, Arizona Instructional, Carolina, Southern, and International Leagues, in addition to the Arizona Fall League.

Riggs officiated the 2010 Southern League All-Star Game and 2017 Triple-A All-Star Game.

Riggs is the third rookie umpire to make his MLB debut during the 2020 regular season.

MLB Debut of Umpire Jose Navas

Jose Navas made his MLB debut Friday with Jeff Nelson's crew in Chicago. Navas becomes the fourth Venezuelan to reach MLB as an umpire, following Manny Gonzalez, Carlos Torres, and Edwin Moscoso, who debuted on Opening Day.

Like Moscoso, Navas formerly officiated in Venezuela's professional winter league.

His Minor League journey began in 2015's Gulf Coast rookie league, after which Navas traveled through the Florida State and Southern Leagues before his 2019 midseason promotion to the Triple-A International League and Arizona Fall League assignment.

Navas was the crew chief for the 2019 MiLB All-Star Futures Game in Cleveland and is a past recipient of the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League's 2017 Gualberto Acosta Award for Umpire of the Year, and the Appalachian League's inaugural Dale Ford Award for top umpire in 2015.

Navas served as HP Umpire during that 2019 Arizona Fall League when Major League Baseball tested its Automated Ball/Strike System during live game play. After the computer called Giants prospect Jacob Heyward out on strikes, Navas warned and ejected Heyward for arguing the call—arguing with a robot umpire's call.
