Umpires No-Call Trout's Inadvertent Kick After Scoring

After Angels outfielder Mike Trout slid safely into home plate during Anaheim Los Angeles' win over Cleveland, he inadvertently kicked the the loose baseball away from Guardians catcher Cam Gallagher, no-called by HP Umpire Manny Gonzalez. With trailing runner Brett Phillips taking third on the play, however, was this interference?

The relevant rule here is Official Baseball Rule 6.01(a)(5), which states, "It is interference by a batter or a runner when any batter or runner who has just been put out, or any runner who has just scored, hinders or impedes any following play being made on a runner. Such runner shall be declared out for the interference of their teammate."

Like many brands of interference, the standard here is "hinders or impedes" and intent is not a requirement: thus, Trout's accidental kick of the baseball can constitute interference if the umpire rules that the kicking hindered or impeded the fielder from a following play.

Also relevant: Catcher Gallagher dropped second baseman Andres Gimenez' throw before Trout arrived and Angels baserunner R1 Phillips was running on the pitch, appearing to stride into third base before F2 Gimenez retrieved the ball.

The no-call enabled Phillips to score on the next play—a sacrifice fly—and the Angels came back with two runs in the 9th inning to beat Cleveland, 5-4.

For this Teachable Moment, 2B Umpire Manny Gonzalez finds the keyhole angle with which to take a slide play at second base as Baltimore's Rougned Odor tried to avoid Toronto middle infielder Bo Bichette's tag, ruling the runner safe after taking the time to see the entirety of the play, a call eventually confirmed via Replay Review as a result of Blue Jays manager John Schneider's unsuccessful challenge.

With a position to see the tag play from above, Gonzalez observes Bichette's glove miss Odor's right arm. A split second later, this same position enables Gonzalez to see Odor's fingertips on second base when Bichette lunges for a second tag try.

Replays indicate Witt slid toward third base and contact with fielder Torres occurred as Witt broken contact with or overslid past third base, the call was correct. At the time of the ejection, the Yankees were leading, 2-1. The Yankees ultimately won the contest, 12-2.

With one out and one on, Reds batter Max Schrock hit a 0-2 curveball from Pirate pitcher Cody Ponce on a line drive to Pirates right fielder Yoshi Tsutsugo as Reds baserunner R1 Jonathan India rounded second and advanced to third base while Schrock rounded first and advanced to second base. After the play, Pittsburgh appealed that runner R1 India failed to touch second base properly his last time by, affirmed as an out (failure to touch a base) by 2B Umpire Rosenberg. Following Replay Review as the result of a manager's challenge by Reds manager Bryan Price alleging India properly touched second base when passing it, Rosenberg's call was overturned to safe. Replays indicate the runner touched the base and was legal upon leaving the base to advance to third base, the overturned call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the game was tied, 1-1. The Reds ultimately won the contest, 6-3.
